Iran foreign minister to meet key ally Putin

MOSCOW - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was due to hold 'important' talks with key ally Vladimir Putin on June 23 , 48 hours after a major US attack on Iran's key nuclear facilities.
Moscow is a crucial backer of Tehran, but has not swung forcefully behind its partner since Israel launched a wave of attacks on June 13, strikes that triggered Iran to respond with missiles and drones.
While Russia condemned the Israeli and US strikes, it has not offered military help and has downplayed its obligations under a sweeping strategic partnership agreement signed with Tehran just months ago.
'In this new dangerous situation ... our consultations with Russia can certainly be of great importance,' Russian state media reported Mr Araghchi as saying after landing in Moscow.
The official IRNA news agency reported on June 22 that Mr Araghchi would 'hold consultations with the president and other senior officials of Russia regarding regional and international developments following the military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran'.
Mr Putin initially pitched himself as a possible mediator between Iran and Israel, but on June 20 said he was only 'suggesting ideas', after US President Donald Trump pushed back against a role for the Kremlin leader.
'We are by no means seeking to act as a mediator, we are simply suggesting ideas,' Mr Putin said at an economic forum in St Petersburg.
'If they turn out to be attractive to both sides, we will only be happy,' he added.
Russia's foreign ministry on J une 21 condemned the US strikes as 'irresponsible', after having previously warned against military intervention. AFP

Mr Anwar's government is set to introduce an expanded Sales and Services Tax from July 2025 and also plans to cut subsidies for its most commonly used petrol this year. The Cabinet has also been rocked by the May 28 resignation of two key ministers, after an internal election for the People's Justice Party that Mr Anwar helms was marred by allegations of vote-rigging and nepotism. REUTERS/Isabel Infantes/ File Photo LONDON - Britain's populist Reform UK party unveiled plans on Monday to offer wealthy, often foreign newcomers a "Britannia Card" to gain exemption from tax on international wealth, income or gains for 10 years for a one-off, 250,000 pound ($336,000) payment. The policy draws a new battle line before the next national election with Britain's governing Labour Party. The government has closed exemptions on so-called "non-doms", or non-domiciled residents, who have long paid little or no UK tax on money earned overseas. Using a press conference to also criticise the opposition Conservative Party for hiking taxes on voters when it held power, Farage said the change would see the 250,000-pound payments distributed among Britain's lowest-earning 10% of full-time workers. "We want, as a party, as many entrepreneurs, as many risk takers, as many job creators, as many people paying lots of tax, as many people investing huge sums of money - we want as many of them as possible to be in our country and that is why today we are coming up with this idea of the Britannia card," said Farage. Last year some 10,800 wealthy people, some non-doms and some British, left the country, he said. "We are also doing something with a very specific aim, aimed at those in work ... So making that gap between being on benefits and going to work bigger, this policy will directly contribute towards that." Reform UK is running ahead of Labour and the Conservatives in the polls before the next election, which must be held by the middle of 2029, buoyed by growing dissatisfaction with mainstream politics and a move towards its brand of populism. Responding to the policy, British finance minister Rachel Reeves told reporters Reform had announced a "tax cut for foreign billionaires". "That would mean either taxes on ordinary working people would have to go up to compensate for those lack of revenues, or ... Reform would have to cut public services," she said.
