Western softball rallies in seventh to beat West Broward, return to state

Western's four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning stunned West Broward with a 5-4 victory in a Class 7A regional final at Western High.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Wildcats starting senior pitcher Ali Solo forced in the winning run when she was hit by a pitch on her right foot to score Katarina Kuma from third.
The victory lifted the advanced Wildcats (20-5-1) to the state semifinals at Boombah-Soldiers Creek Park in Longwood where they will look to repeat as state champs. Western will face Oviedo Hagerty on May 23 at either 2 or 4 in a 7A state semifinal.
'We fight to the end,' Western coach John Bradshaw said. 'These girls have been in big games, and they never give up. We preach that day in and day out. A lot of hard work goes into this. Every time we step on the field, we have a chance to win. The opposing pitcher lost control towards the end, and I instructed Ali (Solo) to take advantage of this opportunity. It turned out and we're going to states.'
Solo, who wasn't having her best outing, relished in the moment.
'This was probably one of the biggest moments for me,' Solo said. 'I wasn't expecting her to hit me at all. She had been pitching great all night. Honestly, I was going to do anything for my team at that point. I had been struggling at the plate. Taking that pitch obviously got us somewhere.'
Up 2-1 entering the top of the sixth inning, the Bobcats added two more runs on an error, allowing Mady Remotigue and Cyara Geronimo to score increasing their lead to three runs.
West Broward (18-8) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run double down the left-field line, with Victoria Carmona and Isabella Cruz scoring.
Western had managed a pair of meaningless hits through the first three-innings, before a bunt single by Gia Solano pushed Delaney Clair, who was running for Kennedy Butter, home from third.
'She gave it everything she got,' said West Broward coach Kyle Davis of his starting pitcher in sophomore Cheyanne Chaffin. 'Sometimes it just doesn't go your way. Having a 4-1 lead slip away in the last inning with an out is hard to swallow. We just fell short, and it hurts. It's beyond words.'

New culture has four-star TE Lincoln Watkins ready to play for Kentucky

Kentucky moved quickly and now has a four-star tight end in its 2026 recruiting class. Port Huron (Mich.) Northern tight end Lincoln Watkins announced his commitment to the Wildcats. Watkins is the eighth known commitment of the cycle for the Wildcats as the program looks to jumpstart its recruiting efforts. This wasn't always the school that was in the picture for the Michigan playmaker. Back on June 10 he opted to reset his recruitment and open things up to new schools. At that point, his recruitment was a battle between Florida and Nebraska. Advertisement But just a few days after that Kentucky swooped in and offered him a scholarship. Watkins actually received the first phone call from new tight ends coach Derek Shay. The coach relayed to Watkins that the team had him as the number one tight end on the board and would be thrilled to have him. Then on June 17 he popped up for a mid-week official visit in Lexington. Watkins told Rivals what he was hoping to see during that visit. 'What Kentucky's plans are for me in the proceeding future and if this is a place I can truly be developed into the player I want to be,' Watkins told Rivals. And now Kentucky is going to benefit from quickly moving into action after the Michigan native shook up his recruitment. The people at Kentucky and the environment on campus pushed things over the edge for Watkins. They made him feel like a huge priority too. Coach Mark Stoops sees Watkins as the type of player that can be thrown right into the action as a freshman. Advertisement 'Honestly, to be completely honest with you, what I'm most excited about is just the people here,' Watkins said. Coach Stoops and everyone made me feel so welcome and that's the main reason I picked them.' As a junior Watkins did a little bit of everything for Northern. He hauled in 39 catches for 668 yards, ran the ball for 245 yards and had 17 total touchdowns. For good measure, he chipped in 42 total tackles on defense. Watkins is just a good football player that you want to have on your team. He'll be a tight end in college and has the chance to excel in that role. Alabama reportedly offers top 2027 in-state quarterback prospect

This past week, the Alabama Crimson Tide officially extended an offer to one of the top in-state quarterbacks in Alabama's 2027 class, Trent Seaborn. Seaborn announced the offer from Alabama via a post on social media. A name that has grown more-and-more across Alabama high school football in recent years, Seaborn has been a starter at quarterback for one of the state's top programs, Thompson High School, since his eighth grade season back in 2022. Since, Seaborn has helped lead Thompson to two Class 7A state championships in 2022 and 2024, which is Alabama's highest classification. According to the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings, Seaborn is currently considered as the nation's No. 215 overall player in the 2027 class, as well as the No. 16 quarterback nationally. Seaborn, a four-star prospect, is also considered as the No. 9 prospect in the state of Alabama. SAN FRANCISCO Archer Horn (St. Ignatius): One of three Wildcats to earn first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League selection, the left-handed-hitting shortstop and relief pitcher led the Chronicle's No. 8 team in batting average (.352), runs (30), hits (31) and home runs (seven) and committed just three errors in 88 total chances. He also had a 2-0 pitching record with a save and 2.02 ERA, and stole 16 bases in 17 attempts. The 10th-ranked 2026 prospect in California according to Prep Baseball Report committed to Stanford when he was a freshman. Quinten Marsh (Valley Christian): Another Stanford commit, Marsh, a senior outfielder and pitcher, was named the WCAL Player of the Year for the Chronicle's No. 3 team after hitting .505 with 46 hits, 30 RBIs and 15 doubles, all team highs. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder, ranked the No. 57 senior in the state by Prep Baseball Report, also went 7-2 on the mound with a 1.16 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 54⅓ innings. EAST BAY Bo Smith (St. Patrick-St. Vincent-Vallejo): The 5-foot-8, 160-pound middle infielder and center fielder for the Bruins (20-5) led the team with a .581 average (43 hits) with six doubles, three triples and four home runs and scored 46 runs. The four-year starter also stole 38 bases to finish with 100 in his career. He had three hits in a game seven times — including his final two games — and struck out just four times in 92 plate appearances. In his four-year career, Smith had 132 hits, 133 runs, 25 doubles and 12 triples. Arlo Pendleton (Petaluma): The Valley Vine Athletic League Co-Most Valuable Player not only ranked tied for sixth in the NCS with nine wins (against one loss, 1.37 ERA, 74 strikeouts, 56⅓ innings) but he also led the Trojans (20-7) with four home runs and batted .391. The Cal Poly signee had 25 hits and 22 RBIs. He was the winning pitcher in an opening-round NCS Division 1 game at Castro Valley.
