SIAM hosts conference on circular mobility on World Environment Day
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) held its 5th International Conference on the occasion of
World Environment Day
, focusing on
circular mobility
and
sustainable practices
in the
automotive sector
. The event featured discussions across government, industry and research stakeholders on waste management,
plastic reduction
, recycling, and low-emission technologies.
The programme included a street play on plastic pollution by school students and a prize ceremony for a student painting competition titled Nature's Palette, recognising nine participants from Delhi NCR.
Industry and policy interventions
The inaugural session centred around waste management aligned with Mission LiFE. Shailesh Chandra, President of SIAM and Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, outlined three key requirements to support the circular economy: a robust policy framework for lightweighting and lifecycle management, an incentive-based scrappage ecosystem, and improved recycling infrastructure.
Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, said India had reached 20 per cent ethanol blending and that 11 companies were developing
flex-fuel engines
. He also announced the launch of an electric truck programme, backed by ₹500 crore, and confirmed that India would deploy 14,000 electric buses. Other initiatives include promoting electric ambulances, compressed biogas, hydrogen and flex-fuel vehicles.
Sector-focused technical sessions
Three thematic sessions were also conducted during the event-- Plastic and Materials Circularity, Tyre and Oil Recycling and Battery and E-Waste
SIAM Executive Director Prashant K. Banerjee said the automotive sector was progressing across electrification, biofuels and hydrogen-based transport. Director General Rajesh Menon reaffirmed SIAM's commitment to cleaner mobility and circularity.

Govt Makes ABS, Two Helmets Mandatory For New Two-Wheelers
In an attempt to push forward the road safety agenda, the transport ministry has made anti-lock braking systems (ABS) mandatory for all new scooters and motorcycles. Specifically, it covers all the two-wheelers manufactured after January 2026, irrespective of the engine capacity. Before this mandate, the rule addressing the presence of single-channel ABS was limited to two-wheelers with a 125 cc engine capacity. Along with the aforementioned directions, the government plans to make it mandatory for the dealers to provide two helmets with two-wheelers at the time of sale. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reported that more than 1.96 crore two-wheelers were sold in India during FY26. Among this total, 1.53 crore vehicles were two-wheelers with an engine capacity of 125 cc or lower, representing just over 78 per cent of overall sales. As a result of these figures, the prices for two-wheelers under 125 cc are projected to increase by at least Rs 2,000. Data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) indicates that 44.5 per cent of all accidents in 2022 involved two-wheelers, with a significant number of head injuries reported. Consequently, the government has enacted a rule requiring all two-wheelers, regardless of engine size, to be fitted with ABS. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is an essential safety component for motorcycles and scooters, stopping wheel lock-up during abrupt or forceful braking. By regulating brake pressure, ABS allows riders to retain control, greatly lowering the chances of skidding or losing stability, particularly in urgent situations or on slick surfaces like wet roads. This technology reduces stopping distances compared to bikes without ABS, which can be vital for preventing accidents. Some studies suggest that the presence of ABS on a motorcycle can reduce road crashes by 35 to 45 per cent.

Desi auto cos yet to get Beijing nod for magnets
No Indian auto component or vehicle company managed to get approval from the Chinese govt for procuring rare earth magnets so far, sources said. They added that there is also "no clarity as yet" on any timeline for a confirmed meeting with representatives of the Chinese govt, despite the intervention of Indian officials. The applications for sourcing magnets were filed mainly by auto component manufacturers, who provide fully-built sophisticated component assemblies such as speedometers, electric motors, e-axles, electric water pumps, automatic transmission kits, speakers, sensors and ignition coils (used in engines). The companies that applied include Uno Minda, Bosch, Mareli, TVS Group, Motherson Sumi and Sona Comstar. "There were no approvals so far, according to the latest assessment we carried through interactions with industry representatives," one of the sources told TOI. "The situation is grave, and there is now massive uncertainty regarding manufacturing schedules and factory output." The request for a meeting with Chinese representatives is being pursued not only by industry bodies - Auto Component Manufacturers Association (Acma) and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) - but also by ministries, such as heavy industries, external affairs, and Commerce. Officials from major automobile companies like Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, and TVS are also pursuing the matter. The industry also had a meeting with top officials at the ministry of heavy industries earlier this week as govt looks at ways to navigate out of the current crisis. "However, not much headway was made so far," an official source said. Industry executives said the ministry onboarded Ernst & Young as a partner to work on the issue. The meeting also reviewed the preparation of some Indian companies working in the field of magnets. The auto industry requested local producers to give a firm timeline on supplies, if at all possible, emphasising that their production line is dependent on quick procurement. Both Acma and Siam prepared a list of delegates that they intend to rope in if a visit to China can be facilitated by the govt. Through a notification issued on April 4 this year, the Chinese govt imposed certain restrictions in the export permit system for medium and heavy rare earth metals, its alloys, magnets, and related products. To stop the diversion of magnets to defence and weapon requirements, China mandated that exporters must obtain a licence based on the provision of an End User Certificate (EUC), which would need approval from DGFT and the ministry of external affairs and also be endorsed by the Chinese Embassy in India. After this, the EUC needs to be sent to China for approvals - first from the provincial govt from where the exporter in China will produce and export and then from China's ministry of commerce.
