Former Premier League star, 29, gets Club World Cup's first red card… after referee forgets he'd been booked

FORMER Tottenham and Aston Villa star Clement Lenglet received the first red card of the Club World Cup — despite the referee forgetting he had already been booked.
Lenglet, 29, lined up for Atletico Madrid in their heavy 4-0 defeat to newly crowned Champions League kings Paris Saint-Germain.

The 16-time France defender had only just completed a permanent move to Atletico from Barcelona after a season-long loan move.
But Lenglet's time against PSG ended in disaster when he was given his marching orders during the second half.
With the score at 2-0 and 13 minutes left on the clock, Lenglet began to argue with Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs after a minor decision went against Atleti.
The official was having none of it though and quickly brandished a yellow card.
However, Kovacs had seemingly forgotten that he had already booked Lenglet earlier in the match, leaving fans and pundits stunned.
He was quickly made aware of the incorrect decision though.
And after a minute, Kovacs returned to Lenglet before producing a red card.
Fans were quick to react though, with many criticising Kovacs.
One said: 'The ref in this game has been something else.'
Another declared: 'Worst I've ever seen.'

One noted: 'Bro this ref.'
Another added: 'Referee needs to be questioned.'
Lenglet will now miss Atletico's next game against Seattle Sounders.
But he will be able to play in the final group match against Brazilian champions Botafogo, with the winner likely to claim second spot behind an unstoppable-looking PSG side.
Lenglet is best known to Premier League fans for underwhelming loans at Tottenham and Villa.
He made 35 appearances for Spurs during the 2022/23 season, with the Londoners opting against making his move permanent.
Lenglet then spent the following campaign at Aston Villa, but failed to impress in 25 outings.

He talks fondly of how he agreed to wear a watch as a test driver at a time before Richard Mille had any formal budget for such things. But it is not a piece that has simply been badged with a Ferrari logo: the watchmaker worked closely with Ferrari's Centro Stile in Maranello, near Modena, for three years to express the spirit of the cars in the form of a timepiece. It is the beauty of the RM 43-01 as much as its performance that captures the attention. The oscillating tourbillon compensates for the impact of gravity and the chronograph can measure split times with its two seconds hands, but it is the crafted look and feel — and the echoes of the driving machines — that really set it apart. The clutch wheel of a Ferrari V8 engine inspired the barrel jewel setting, while x-shaped supports combined with screws in gold with hexagonal socket heads reference details on Ferrari crankcases and engine blocks. The pushers, case and indices take styling cues from the geometry of the bodies of Ferrari's SF90 Stradale, Daytona SP3 and 488 Challenge Evo models, while a titanium plate shaped to recall the rear wing of the 499P hypercar is engraved with the firm's famous prancing horse motif. Paulino pips Nasir, Cherotich beats Chemutai at Paris Diamond League

PARIS, June 20 (Reuters) - Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino outfought Salwa Eid Naser to win the women's 400 metres at the Paris Diamond League meet on Friday, Faith Cherotich won the steeplechase and Grace Stark set a personal best to outgun Tobi Amusan in the 100m hurdles. Dominican Republic's Paulino needed a season's best time of 48.81, a new meeting record, as the world champion came from behind to pip Bahrain's Naser, who took silver at last year's Olympics. "All I focused on was to get to through to the finish line feeling strong, although I am not feeling very well, my stomach has been playing up a bit," Paulino said. Kenyan Cherotich took bronze at the Paris Olympics behind Ugandan silver medallist Peruth Chemutai in the 3,000m steeplechase, and the pair left the rest of the field behind early in the race. This time 20-year-old Cherotich came out on top as she left her rival behind in the closing metres, with a personal best time of 8:53.37, to repeat her wins in Doha and Oslo.
