Transport authority to sit down with train drivers over C-Series concerns
The Public Transport Authority will host a workshop with the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, train drivers and C-Series train manufacturer Alstom in the coming weeks, after more than 300 drivers expressed serious concerns about the comfort and braking ability of the locally made trains.
A union survey of train drivers found 93.7 per cent thought the trains were not fit for traffic when they started taking passengers, while 82.8 per cent reported 'braking inconsistencies' like 'reduction in braking effort, loss of braking effort, surging'.
More than 97.7 per cent also reported inadequate air-conditioning in the cabins and 82.5 per cent said the problems affected their mental wellbeing.
More than 79 per cent want the government to suspend railcar delivery until the issues were addressed.
The opposition pounced on the survey, saying it raised questions about the safety of the trains given the concerns around braking.
A PTA spokeswoman told WAtoday there were no braking issues on the C-Series train.
'The new railcars have excellent acceleration and braking features and are an improvement on the A and B-series railcar fleet,' she said.
'We expected there would be a period of adjustment when drivers began using the new trains and their enhanced features, and the PTA is committed to working with its drivers to take on board their feedback.
'Solutions have already been developed in response to other feedback from drivers. For example, a software update is being rolled out for the air conditioning system, and a trial of new driver seats is scheduled to commence shortly.

Over 300 WA train drivers blew the whistle on the Government with major concerns about the safety and operability of WA Labor's Metronet C-series trains. The arrogant and dismissive response from Transport Minister Rita Saffioti should horrify every Western Australian. A six-railcar C-series train has 400 seats and can carry more than 1000 passengers. So, when the union that represents the people driving those trains releases a survey stating that the majority of drivers support withdrawing the trains until the issues can be resolved, you would expect the State Government to pay attention. The survey is genuinely shocking: 94 per cent of train drivers believe the trains weren't ready for service when they launched; 91 per cent believe the training they received was inadequate; 83 per cent report serious safety issues such as braking, speed and communication issues; 73.8 per cent of drivers said they themselves have felt unsafe while operating a C-series railcar. The 59-page report from the Rail Tram and Bus Union raised a plethora of specific issues. Doors opening or closing when they shouldn't, braking inconsistencies, difficulty communicating using the passenger emergency intercom, auto speed issues causing surging and/or over-speeding. There were also pages of testimony from drivers not holding back with their criticisms. The report also states that drivers felt the introduction of the C-series was 'politically motivated and rushed.' When 75 per cent of train drivers tell you they feel unsafe operating these massive machines, you sit up and pay attention. So, it has been surprising to see the level of willingness of the Cook Labor Government to completely deny and dismiss genuine concerns raised by professional train drivers. Premier Roger Cook, after spending quite a bit of time during the last election campaign riding around on the trains, had this to say: 'We understand that, you know, changing the model of trains always challenges the work force.' Ms Saffioti was even more blunt, responding to questions in Parliament from Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas by saying: '… drivers need to get used to the new trains.' It is difficult to think of a more disdainful response from the State Government to train drivers than to tell them that they, not the machinery they are paid to professionally operate, are the problem. It is the sort of arrogance that is becoming a constant theme from WA Labor in their third term. The drivers have good reason to be cynical of the Minister's priorities. The Bussell Highway duplication was 'opened' in time for Easter this year after years of delay — but the red warning cones, lane closures and speed reductions were swiftly back in place afterwards and roadworks continue to this day. The ultimate disdain of the Minister, who is also the Treasurer, is for WA taxpayers. Metronet has now blown out by over $12.5 billion. That's not her money, that is yours. While the new 'basic' digital instrumentation looks neat in the driver's binnacle, I feel this is a step backwards for the manual as it's difficult at times to gauge how many revs you have on board on take-off and how quickly the tacho is rising on the clock radio-style display. Having hill start assist definitely helps when setting off on an incline. It handles well too. Unlike the MG 3, which lacks any form of modern active safety tech for now, the Picanto has a slew of modern assistance features that should not only help you on the road but also give parents peace of mind when their youngster set out to drive in this big scary world. AEB, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic assist as well as lane keep assist all actively intervene to avoid collisions or drifting out of one's lane. You also have Lane Following Assist, which will actively keep you centred in your lane, and it does so in an unthreatening way. There's also auto high-beam for the standard projector-type halogen headlights. Unfortunately, LED units are reserved for the GT-Line flagship. I can forgive this in the Picanto, but perhaps not models higher up in Kia's range. Note that Kia doesn't offer the Picanto with a more sophisticated AEB system incorporating pedestrian and cyclist detection – nor adaptive cruise control – despite it being available in the Korean domestic market. The Picanto is also surprisingly settled on the freeway for such a little car, helped by Kia Australia's local tuning of the suspension and steering, perhaps as well as the fact the Picanto is sold in markets like Europe. While it takes a heavy foot to get anywhere quickly, you don't feel like you're in some dangerous little buzzbox that'll get blown away by passing buses and trucks. It's surprisingly sure-footed and confident at 100 clicks. Further, the five-speed manual's long final ratio means it's not spinning away at well above 3000rpm like it is in the four-speed auto. It just feels like it has longer legs in those scenarios. AEB, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic assist as well as lane keep assist all actively intervene to avoid collisions or drifting out of one's lane. You also have Lane Following Assist, which will actively keep you centred in your lane, and it does so in an unthreatening way. There's also auto high-beam for the standard projector-type halogen headlights. Unfortunately, LED units are reserved for the GT-Line flagship. I can forgive this in the Picanto, but perhaps not models higher up in Kia's range. Note that Kia doesn't offer the Picanto with a more sophisticated AEB system incorporating pedestrian and cyclist detection – nor adaptive cruise control – despite it being available in the Korean domestic market. Transport authority to sit down with train drivers over C-Series concerns
The Public Transport Authority will host a workshop with the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, train drivers and C-Series train manufacturer Alstom in the coming weeks, after more than 300 drivers expressed serious concerns about the comfort and braking ability of the locally made trains. A union survey of train drivers found 93.7 per cent thought the trains were not fit for traffic when they started taking passengers, while 82.8 per cent reported 'braking inconsistencies' like 'reduction in braking effort, loss of braking effort, surging'. More than 97.7 per cent also reported inadequate air-conditioning in the cabins and 82.5 per cent said the problems affected their mental wellbeing. More than 79 per cent want the government to suspend railcar delivery until the issues were addressed. The opposition pounced on the survey, saying it raised questions about the safety of the trains given the concerns around braking. A PTA spokeswoman told WAtoday there were no braking issues on the C-Series train. 'The new railcars have excellent acceleration and braking features and are an improvement on the A and B-series railcar fleet,' she said. 'We expected there would be a period of adjustment when drivers began using the new trains and their enhanced features, and the PTA is committed to working with its drivers to take on board their feedback. 'Solutions have already been developed in response to other feedback from drivers. For example, a software update is being rolled out for the air conditioning system, and a trial of new driver seats is scheduled to commence shortly.
