THG sales hurt by beauty weakness but nutrition shows recovery

Daily Mail29-04-2025

THG has reported lower first-quarter turnover as weaker sales in its beauty business offset improvement in the group's nutrition unit.
The e-commerce retailer, which owns the Cult Beauty and Myprotein brands, saw overall revenue feal by 8 per cent at constant currency rates to £375.6million in the three months ending March.
Sales in its beauty arm declined by 9.8 per cent to £223.6million, partly because the equivalent period last year included the Easter weekend occurring in late March.
THG also blamed the drop on the scaling back of sales activity in certain Asian and European markets in order to focus on attracting higher-margin customers.
Weaker demand for beauty products offset nutrition-related sales rising in February and March thanks to the number of online customers increasing in the UK.
THG's nutrition division saw revenue slump by 8.7 per cent to £579.8million in 2024 after the company slashed prices to try and clear old stock as part of a rebrand.
As a result, the Manchester-based company's total revenue last year shrank by more than £100million to about £1.9billion, although its 'post-demerger' sales were only 0.4 per cent down at £1.7billion.
THG spun off loss-making technology platform Ingenuity in January to simplify operations, revive shareholder value, and bolster its finances.
Following the demerger, the group completed a debt refinancing deal up to 2029, conducted an equity raise, and entered the FTSE 250 Index.
Matthew Moulding, chief executive and co-founder of THG, said: 'We are now fully focused on THG Beauty and THG Nutrition, and I'm incredibly proud of the progress each business has made.'
He added: 'Both our businesses have undertaken extensive model changes over the past 24 months.
'Beauty has focused on more profitable markets and building loyalty schemes, while Myprotein has pressed ahead in undertaking a successful rebrand, underpinning rapid growth across global offline retail and licensing.'
THG also revealed its adjusted earnings before nasties flatlined at £114.4million last year.
Since listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2020, THG has struggled with heavy losses, slowing online trade, and corporate governance concerns.
Moulding has expressed regret for taking the company public in the UK, once saying it 'just sucked from start to finish.'
THG shares have plunged by around 95 per cent from their initial public offering price of 500 pence per share to 26.1p as of mid-Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Buckét Launches its First 24hr Big Community Clean Up

Mrs Buckét, the award-winning commercial cleaning company, is appealing for nominations for its first 24-hour free clean up event, called The Big Community Clean Up. The Swansea-based business, which delivers cleaning and facilities management services to the public and private sector in South and Mid West Wales, has launched the initiative to give back to the communities in which it works in. Rachael Flanagan, Mrs Buckét's CEO and founder, explained: 'I am so excited to be launching this initiative. The idea is that we get our cleaning experts out to the winning community space and in 24 hours give it the refresh it deserves. 'We are thinking of community centres, community centres, village halls, youth clubs, scouts/guides huts, church halls, foodbanks, charity spaces, support hubs, day centres, community kitchens, and community art spaces – basically, any space that is used by a community in South Wales that could do with a bit of TLC and a special Mrs Buckét spruce up.' Rachael continued: 'When I started this business nearly 20 years ago, it was built in the community that I live in – it's the community that made Mrs Buckét the success it is today and so now it's our time to give back. Think DIY SOS, but swap the hammers for mops and dusters, and possibly a paint brush. 'We want nominations for those community spaces that are vital to the people they serve, that are the lifeblood of an area. The places whose doors are always open but might be a little weather worn and need to get their shine back. Let me and my talented team of cleaning and mending experts in to give the space all the love and attention it deserves.' Nominations for the Mrs Buckét Community Clean Up are open now. Those nominations will then be narrowed down by Mrs Buckét's founder Rachael Flanagan, founder of homeless charity Big Moose Chloe Smith, mental health advocate and former Traitors star Andrew Jenkins, and founder of the Child of Wales awards Blanche Sainsbury. The top three finalists will be published on the Mrs Buckét website and then it's over to the public, who will vote for their winner. In September, on a day agreed with the community space, Rachael will be joined by The Big Community Clean Up team, and some of Mrs Buckét's partners, including Newhall Janitorial, Gum Blitzer, Dyfed Recycling, Big Moose, PK Safety and CMB Maintenance, to put the sparkle back into the space and give it a new lease of life. Stuart Powell, Director of Newhall Janitorial explained why they got involved in the initiative: 'This is a fantastic opportunity to give back to South Wales and the communities we serve. By contributing our time, resources and expertise to help restore and refresh shared public spaces, we're not only promoting a cleaner environment but also fostering local pride and community spirit. It's our way of saying thank you and making a positive impact where it matters most.' Rachael added: 'This will be our first Big Community Clean Up, we are hoping to be able to run at least one a year to able to give back to the communities that have helped my business grow and also to help those communities that my colleagues and I live and work in. 'We hope to get as many nominations as possible to help us find the community spaces most in need of a bit of care and attention. So, if you use your community centre every day and feel like it could do with some TLC, or if your scout hall is looking more like a camp site every day – get in touch and tell us why it deserves the Mrs Buckét magic. We have the expertise and will do all we can to help you.' You can nominate your community space for The Big Community Clean Up, here:

Dill Wins at the 2025 Wales Startup Awards

Swansea-based AI firm Dill has been named the overall winner at the 2025 Wales StartUp Awards. Dill is a smart labelling platform that enables businesses to instantly create and print compliant labels without the usual manual effort. Designed for use across multiple locations, it replaces time-consuming formatting tasks like barcodes, QR codes, ingredients, and expiry dates with automated label generation based on real-time data. Its founder Alex Coldea was delighted to win the award and said it was the start of something special for the business. Alex said: 'Winning the 2025 Wales StartUp of the Year is a huge moment for the team and a reflection of the impact Dill is already making across the food and retail industries. We started this business because we were frustrated by how slow and unnecessarily complicated labeling had become, a process so many people just accepted as 'normal' when we knew it could be done better. What began as a small, focused solution quickly revealed a much bigger opportunity, and that meant letting go of the original idea and starting from scratch. 'That pivot was tough, but it changed everything. We rebuilt Dill from the ground up to be simple, fast, and user‑centric. Today, our AI‑powered labeling platform is making labeling seamless for brands like BrewDog, Atis, Busaba, Nisa Local, The Secret Group and more, across hundreds of sites, from BP, Shell, Esso, and Jet service stations, to Saracens Stadium and Swansea Council. From food‑to‑go and traceability to stock rotation and barcodes, Dill handles it all. 'With our recent launch in the United States and growing deployments across the UK and EMEA with Brother, our hardware partner, we're building Dill into an AI‑driven infrastructure layer that makes labeling invisible, a seamless service that operates across any site or device. We started with food and beverage labeling, but the vision is much larger: to redefine how every industry approaches labeling. This is just the beginning, and we're excited for where this journey takes us next.' Supported by a wide range of partners, including Airwallex, Big Ideas Wales, Bodlondeb, Business Wales, Cardiff Life, Coffi Lab, Join Talent, M-Sparc, Mentera, Town Square, and V-Rum, the UK StartUp Awards were established to highlight the success of start-ups across ten UK nations and regions and to celebrate the achievements of entrepreneurs in all sectors of the economy. Over 1,500 entries were received in 2025 and 200 judges from the UK entrepreneurial ecosystem took part in the judging process. According to Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE, creator of the UK StartUp Awards, this surge in start-up ambition reflects a new generation of entrepreneurs who are not only identifying opportunities but are also building innovative, resilient businesses that are shaping the future of the regional economy. He said: 'The Wales Start-Up Awards have demonstrated, once again, that Welsh entrepreneurs are reshaping the economic landscape, turning bold ideas into thriving ventures and ambition into meaningful impact. That's why we created the StartUp Awards, to celebrate the individuals who are building something from nothing and making a real difference in their communities. Across the country, from rural towns to city centres, founders of new businesses are developing everything from cutting-edge digital solutions to sustainable food brands and green energy businesses that are all grounded in a deep sense of place, purpose, and national pride.' The 32 regional winners from Wales will now progress to the UK StartUp Awards final, taking place at Ideas Fest on September 11th, dubbed the 'Glastonbury for Entrepreneurs', along with the winners from nine other nations and regions. Flotek Strengthens Cloud Infrastructure Capabilities with Acquisition of Microshade

Flotek Group, a Cardiff-based managed IT and communications service provider, has acquired Microshade Business Consultants Limited. Established in 1984, Microshade provides secure IT solutions for over 286 parish councils across the UK and holds ISO 27001:2022 certification. Microshade operates its Cloud Remote Desktop Service at the Southwest Data Centre in Plymouth, where Flotek already maintains a regional office. This acquisition will allow Flotek to provide local IT support and cybersecurity services to parish councils across the country. Additionally, Flotek has been collaborating with Microshade to develop its own Private Application Hosting service, helping businesses move traditional on-premises software, such as accounting software like Sage, Iris, and Pegasus, to a private cloud environment, thereby eliminating the need for on-site servers. This acquisition comes in response to growing demand from customers for Flotek to offer private application hosting. Flotek's initial acquisition was Gower Business Systems, a Pegasus reseller. Jay Ball, CEO of Flotek Group, commented: 'We've had the pleasure of working with the Microshade team for over three years, collaborating on various projects. During the acquisition process, Stuart Wilbur, the founder, sadly passed away. Stuart's vision was to bring advanced technology to the parish council sector, a vision we wholeheartedly share and are committed to continuing. We see tremendous growth potential in hosting our customers' existing server-based applications in our private data centre technology. This complements our existing Microsoft Azure technology offering, as both solutions have their unique advantages in the market.' David Astwood, who will take the position of Head of Infrastructure, added: 'We've worked with the Flotek team for a number of years on joint projects and have enjoyed collaborating on a private cloud offering. We look forward to focusing on growth across the parish councils.' The Microshade team will form the new Cloud Infrastructure team at Flotek, continuing to deliver specialist cloud technology utilising existing data centre relationships and security positions. Microshade, a Microsoft Cloud Partner, will be fully integrated into Flotek over the next 12 months. The acquisition was advised on by Siobhan Williams, senior associate solicitor at Darwin Gray. Siobhan said: 'We are delighted to once again be advising Flotek on another exciting acquisition. It's always a pleasure working with Jay and the team at Flotek.' Flotek sees significant opportunities in the parish council sector, where they already have a substantial share, and aims to drive innovation into other vertical sectors such as accounting and legal. Microshade, based in Plymouth, provides secure IT services, including cybersecurity, to national clients.
