Oman: Committee Zones Affairs of Opaz reviews key initiatives, vital projects
Muscat: The Committee Zones Affairs of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (Opaz) held its first meeting of the year, where a series of key initiatives and vital projects aimed at enhancing performance and developing the zones were reviewed.
The meeting was chaired by Engineer Ahmed bin Hassan Al Dheeb, Deputy Chairman of the Authority, in the presence of chief executives of special economic zones, free zones, and industrial cities.
Several key topics were discussed during the meeting, including the progress of the Statistical Survey Database project, which aims to unify statistical data from all zones into a centralised electronic platform for easier access, updating, and management.
The meeting also reviewed the Five-Year Plan Introduction Project, designed to enhance the financial, legal, and regulatory capabilities of special economic and free zones to attract high-value investments in targeted sectors. These sectors include manufacturing industries, logistics, tourism, clean energy, and mining, in addition to improving lifestyle standards and providing public utility services.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed compliance and monitoring results, the mechanism for the performance development standards tool, and the establishment of a renewable energy consumption index in special economic zones, free zones, and industrial cities. This initiative aligns with the Authority's objectives under Oman Vision 2040. A comprehensive plan was also discussed to improve energy efficiency in buildings supervised by the Authority.
Additionally, the meeting covered future forecasts for electricity, water, gas, and wastewater needs in the zones for the next five years. Plans for organising the annual media forum and discussions on the Media Circles Forum for Special Economic Zones, Free Zones, and Industrial Cities were also on the agenda.

SCC approves recommendations to support Sharjah Airport Authority
Airport Support Recommendations The session, chaired by His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, focused on recommendations prepared by the Committee for Drafting Proposals concerning Sharjah International Airport. These recommendations followed discussions held in the Council's 14th session on May 22, 2025, attended by the Authority's Chairman and Director along with department representatives. Strategic Economic Role Council members emphasised the importance of supporting and developing the Airport Authority as a vital gateway for Sharjah and a key driver for economic and tourism growth. They called for enhancing infrastructure, expanding services, and improving operational efficiencies to meet the demands of increased global travel and trade. Forward-Looking Planning Jassim Al Hanaee Al Naqbi, Chairman of the Proposal Drafting Committee, stressed the comprehensive and future-focused nature of the recommendations. He highlighted the need to upgrade services and anticipate rising passenger numbers. New projects expand ecotourism in Oman's nature reserves
Muscat – Oman is stepping up its efforts to develop ecotourism as part of a wider push to balance environmental protection with economic growth and job creation. The sultanate is investing in its 31 nature reserves, which cover nearly 15,000sqkm – about 17% of its land area and 10% of its marine territory. Authorities say these protected areas are central to supporting biodiversity, attracting tourists, and encouraging research on ecosystems and natural processes. The Environment Authority (EA), in partnership with other agencies and civil society, is implementing management plans to conserve habitats while opening up investment opportunities. New investment in ecotourism is expected to strengthen local economies, create jobs in nearby communities, and contribute to a sustainable green economy in line with Oman Vision 2040. Royal decrees continue to protect endangered species and preserve the geological and ecological diversity of the reserves. Strict environmental rules have been set to ensure that conservation remains a priority even as tourism and related projects expand. In recent moves, the Environment Authority signed nine investment contracts worth more than RO44mn for projects in seven reserves. These projects cover sites in Muscat, South Sharqiyah, Al Wusta, Dakhliyah and Dhofar. The new developments aim to provide authentic nature-based experiences, combining conservation with cultural and educational value. Plans include turtle ponds, eco-safaris and adventure tourism in protected settings. Officials emphasise that local communities are closely involved in the planning, running and maintenance of these projects, ensuring direct employment and opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises.
