Malaysia to establish ASEAN's first women's economic empowerment centre in KL

The Sun24-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to establish ASEAN's first Women's Economic Empowerment Centre in Kuala Lumpur, to ensure the bloc's potential and opportunities are accessible to all, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), youth and women.
This aligns with the country's ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship theme, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz, said today.
'In short, as ASEAN's 2025 Chair, we are placing inclusive growth at the heart of Southeast Asia's policies,' he said at the ASEAN Women Economic Summit 2025 (AWES), held in conjunction with the ASEAN Summit here.
Besides AWES, ASEAN supports women and youth entrepreneurs across the region through platforms such as the ASEAN Women Entrepreneurs Network (AWEN), the ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council (AYEC), the Social Enterprises Development Programme (ASEAN SEDP) and the ASEAN Youth Organisation (AYO).
'Of course, the challenges facing the bloc's individual countries are unique, but we must strive to ensure region-wide solutions, even though this will take time,' he said, adding that this is where AWES can play a stronger role.
He said Malaysia, as Chair of ASEAN, looks forward to the outcome of AWES.
Tengku Zafrul said among the feedback awaited are quick wins to create gender-inclusive ASEAN-wide standards and policies, as well as improved access to finance.
'If we were to create a US$1 billion (US$1 = RM4.24) fund for ASEAN, how should it be governed to ensure broad-based impact, transparency and access for women-led businesses? And how do we digitally upskill, say, one million women across our region by 2027?
'A lot of work lies ahead. One Summit alone won't solve all the challenges facing women. But AWES contributes to a worthy cause that has been championed for decades,' he added.

Putin slams attack on Iran, but offers no support to key ally

Russian President Vladimir Putin has pitched himself as a mediator between Iran and Israel. (Sputnik/AP pic) MOSCOW : Russian President Vladimir Putin today slammed attacks on Iran as 'unprovoked' and 'unjustified' in a meeting with Tehran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, but did not announce any concrete support to his key ally in the Middle East. Moscow is a crucial backer of Iran, but has not swung forcefully behind its partner even as the US launched strikes on its nuclear facilities over the weekend. 'This absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran is unjustified,' Putin said in televised remarks to Araghchi at the start of their meeting. Putin did not single out the US attacks, talking instead broadly of 'strikes' against Iran, though the Kremlin had earlier today said it condemned and regretted the US strikes. 'There has been a new escalation of tensions in the region, and, of course, we condemn this and express our deep regret in this regard,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, shortly before Putin met Araghchi in the Kremlin. Putin has pitched himself as a mediator between Iran and Israel, an idea rejected by US President Donald Trump last week. Araghchi told Putin that Russia has been a 'partner and companion' to Tehran and hailed ties between Tehran and Moscow as 'very close and longstanding'. 'Iran is exercising legitimate defence against these aggressions,' he added. Since Israel launched its wave of strikes on June 13, triggering Iran to respond with missiles and drones, Russia has not publicly offered military help to Tehran. Putin and other officials have also downplayed Moscow's obligations under a sweeping strategic partnership agreement signed with Tehran just months ago, highlighting that it is not a mutual defence pact. Russia was 'making efforts to help the Iranian people,' Putin said in the meeting, without elaborating. Asked what specific support Russia might offer, Peskov told reporters that it 'depends on what Iran needs. We have offered our mediation services'. Peskov also said the US strikes on Iran would not affect bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington, saying they were 'different issues'. Putin said last week that Iran had not requested any support from Russia.

World's youngest self-made woman billionaire Lucy Guo says craving work-life balance means you're in wrong job

In an interview with Fortune magazine, the 28-year-old said she does not see her job as work in the traditional sense. "I love doing my job," she said. "I would say that if you feel the need for work-life balance, maybe you're not in the right work." Her daily routine starts at 5:30 a.m. with two to three high-intensity workouts at a training bootcamp, followed by work from 9 a.m. until midnight. "Some days, I am doing more marketing pushes. I'm talking to our PR, I'm doing podcasts, etc," she told Fortune. "Other days I am more product-focused... Reviewing designs, giving user experience feedback." She eats lunch at her desk and never cooks, relying entirely on food delivery service UberEats, she said. Despite working up to 90 hours a week, Guo said she still finds one to two hours each day for family and friends. "You should always find time for that, regardless of how busy you are." While younger generations increasingly prioritize work-life balance, Guo's schedule reflects a growing norm among startup founders. Zoom CEO Eric Yuan shares a similar view. "Work is life, life is work," he said on a recent podcast episode. Despite his demanding schedule, he stressed that family still comes first: "Whenever there's a conflict, guess what? Family first. That's it." Saudi Princess Noura bint Faisal Al Saud, CEO of consulting firm Culture House, echoed the mindset. "I'm always working 24/7 I'm a workaholic, so I don't stop working because I enjoy what I do." Guo, who dropped out of Carnegie Mellon University, later cofounded Scale AI with Alexandr Wang, now the world's youngest self-made billionaire with a net worth estimated at $3.6 billion, according to Forbes. After leaving the company in 2018, she retained a 5% stake, which is now worth an estimated $1.2 billion following Scale's valuation surge to US$25 billion in 2025, reported by Entrepreneur magazine. S he is now CEO of Passes, a platform that helps digital creators monetise their content. -- VNExpress/Vietnam News

PM Anwar, President Lee Agree To Strengthen Malaysia-S. Korea Bilateral Ties

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung have agreed to strengthen bilateral ties between Malaysia and South Korea. Anwar said the relationship between the two nations, which was elevated to a strategic partnership during his visit to Seoul in November last year, will continue to be comprehensively advanced across several areas, including peace and security, defence, economy, education and tourism, as well as regional and global cooperation. 'South Korea is Malaysia's eighth-largest trading partner, with trade exceeding US$20 billion (US$1 = RM4.29) for three consecutive years. I expressed Malaysia's commitment to concluding the Malaysia-Korea Free Trade Agreement (MKFTA) negotiations this year,' he said in a post on the X platform today. Anwar, who contacted Lee this morning, also took the opportunity to congratulate him and the Democratic Party on their victory in the recent presidential election. 'I conveyed my confidence in his leadership to steer (South) Korea into this new phase,' he said. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that towards the end of the conversation, he invited Lee to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit and the ASEAN–South Korea Summit in Kuala Lumpur. 'Insya-Allah, I will also be in Gyeongju (South Korea) this November for the APEC Summit, and I look forward to welcoming him to Malaysia before that,' he added. -- BERNAMA
