Mexico Accuses YouTube Star MrBeast of Misusing Mayan Heritage Sites for Commercial Gain
YouTube megastar MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, is facing accusations from Mexican authorities over his recent viral video filmed at ancient Mayan archaeological sites. The video, titled 'I Explored 2000 Year Old Ancient Temples,' has garnered over 60 million views since its release on May 10.
Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) claims that the video, which features MrBeast exploring restricted areas of the Calakmul and Chichén Itzá sites, violated the terms of a government-issued filming permit. While INAH confirmed that permission had been granted for filming, it stated that the permit did not allow for any commercial or promotional content — including the chocolate product MrBeast branded in the video as a 'Mayan dessert.'
In an official statement, INAH alleged that the video included 'false assertions,' such as scenes showing MrBeast descending into a pyramid via helicopter and handling a pre-Hispanic artifact. These segments, according to the agency, were fabricated or edited in post-production to dramatize the experience.
'All of these are false assertions that obey the theatricality of the YouTuber in question,' the INAH said in its statement.
Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Mexico's Secretary of Culture, condemned the use of archaeological heritage for marketing purposes, saying such content distorts the cultural and historical value of these sites.
'We disapprove of any commercial pursuit that distorts the value of archaeological sites, which are a legacy of our indigenous cultures and the pride of our nation,' she said.
The video was produced by Full Circle Media, and Mexican authorities have confirmed that potential sanctions against the company are under review. President Claudia Sheinbaum has also ordered a formal investigation into the issuance and potential misuse of the filming permit.
A representative for MrBeast told the BBC that no promotional material was filmed on archaeological grounds and defended the video's content, stating it was 'meant to highlight these treasured Mayan sites' and that it is 'unfortunate this has turned into a political issue.'
As of now, MrBeast, who remains the most-followed individual creator on YouTube with over 395 million subscribers, has not issued a public statement regarding the controversy.

Indian thriller The Red Balloon, which has been shot in the kingdom with an all-Bahrain-based cast and crew, is set to premiere tomorrow, June 20, writes Melissa Nazareth. The Malayalam language short film, with English and Arabic subtitles, will be screened in a private event at EPIX Cinemas, and, thereafter, made available to the public on YouTube. Launched under the Kutti Sarah Entertainment banner, The Red Balloon, is produced by creative entrepreneur Priya Lijin and directed by cinematic talents Lijin Poyil and Vikas Surya; Priya and Lijin own Kutti Sarah Entertainment. The cinematography has been brought alive on screen by Hariz Ekkachu, an accountant and well-known name in the local south-Indian film fraternity. The show stars many artists, including eight-year-old Sarah Lijin, Priya and Lijin's daughter, and grade three student of The Asian School. 'It's taken us two years to film and complete this project but we're happy that it's finally done,' Asha Hariz, who has a cameo in the production, told GulfWeekly. 'Even though all the cast and crew are based in the kingdom, it was difficult to get common dates for the actors, which was a major challenge. 'Plans for a sequel are underway but it will take some time and will be announced at a later date,' she revealed. Speaking about the short film, Asha noted that the audience will not be able to predict who the 'main hero' is until the very end, which brings with it a 'great plot twist'. 'The movie starts off with just one hero and heroine but then more characters are added,' she explained. While The Red Balloon has been filmed across locations, including Salmaniya, Maameer and Malkiya, the film's story is set in the south-Indian state of Kerala. 'We had to use props and be creative about how we filmed to give that effect. 'In fact, once, two of our actors were dressed in police uniforms and standing next to a police vehicle that had 'Kerala police' written on it. A duo in a car spotted them, mistook them for real and sped away in a different direction,' she said, recalling lighter moments during the filming period.

I knew [the country] and learned even more while doing 'Searching for Mexico'. 'But my dad had always said we were also from Spain. I used to say, 'No, we're not.' Then I took a DNA test, and it was confirmed.' Eva jumped at the chance to film a follow-up series in Spain, and it proved to be hugely informative for the actress. She said: 'When CNN wanted to do the next season, I said, 'We should do Spain because my ancestors are from Spain.' Shooting 'Searching for Spain' was different, though, because I didn't know [the country] as well. 'In this series, you'll see that my questions are genuine and my curiosity is heightened.
