Ryan Reynolds drops awkward reference to Blake Lively's legal battle as her Taylor Swift texts set for release
Ryan Reynolds stirred buzz at the Cannes Lions 2025 festival on Thursday after making a remark that many interpreted as a nod to the ongoing legal firestorm surrounding his wife Blake Lively, and her former co-star Justin Baldoni.
The legal saga began in December 2024 when Blake Lively accused Justin Baldoni of sexually harassing her on set — claims he denied — prompting Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios to sue Lively, her publicist Leslie Sloane, and Ryan Reynolds for defamation.
Baldoni later escalated the fight with a $250 million lawsuit against The New York Times over its explosive New Year's Eve exposé detailing Lively's allegations.
Earlier this month, a judge dismissed Baldoni's defamation case in a major blow to the actor, though his legal team will still gain access to Lively's private text messages with Taylor Swift — whom Blake infamously referred to as 'my dragon' in an exchange allegedly meant to intimidate Baldoni — after withdrawing a subpoena aimed at the singer directly.
Now, at Cannes Lions, Reynolds took the stage at Stagwell's Sport Beach to promote his soccer team, Wrexham AFC — and raised eyebrows with an unexpected quip.
While handing a water bottle to someone in the crowd, the Deadpool star joked, 'I'm not throwing this. I've been around lawyers. You can walk up here and grab it,' according to Page Six.

He also took a moment to reflect on how sports can bring people together in a world fractured by division, per the outlet.
'We live in a world right now that is so… identity politics… almost a religion,' Reynolds said. 'For that to be checked at the door in sports, in theatrical film, and in music, concerts, we all walk in, we go together.'
Reynolds added, 'We're all feeling the same thing at the same time and the same moment.
'You have this bonding mechanism — and I don't mean to over romanticize it, but it's romantic.
'It's a beautiful thing to watch people come together, especially when we feel so divided in every other aspect of our life.'
The panel comes after DailyMail.com exclusively learned that Baldoni's lawyers will be allowed to peruse a tranche of messages exchanged by Blake and Taylor, with all communications related to It Ends With Us now set for scrutiny.
Swift and Lively's relationship has cratered in recent months, with the singer left furious at being dragged into the case.
And she is not the only Swift to be dragged in: last week the Daily Mail revealed the subpoena against her had been withdrawn because Baldoni's team had managed to acquire the information they were seeking – from none other than her dad Scott, 73.
'Scott Swift did not want his daughter to be dragged into this any further and he voluntarily gave up this information as part of a deal that would include [Baldoni's team] withdrawing their subpoena for Taylor,' the source explained.
The pop star's doting dad - who has played a key role in building Swift's billion-dollar empire as her financial advisor - came to his daughter's rescue after she was allegedly blackmailed by Lively's lawyers.
That 'blackmail' revelation appeared in a legal letter filed last month by Baldoni's lawyers, who alleged that Lively's team had attempted to 'coerce' Swift to issue a public statement in support of her.
The filing claimed Lively's lawyer, Michael Gottlieb, had contacted Swift's team and demanded she 'release a statement of support for Ms. Lively, intimating that, if Ms. Swift refused to do so, private text messages of a personal nature in Ms. Lively's possession would be released.'
Swift's team allegedly responded to Gossip Girl star Lively's 'inappropriate and apparently extortionate threats in at least one written communication' sent to Gottlieb, according to the letter.
'It is those communications that [Baldoni's team] seeks to obtain by way of subpoena, as they would evidence an attempt to intimidate and coerce a percipient witness in this litigation,' the letter stated.
Scott seemingly didn't take this alleged attempt to extort his 35-year-old daughter lightly, and decided to take matters into his own hands by cooperating with Baldoni and Bryan Freedman in order to protect Swift from any further legal involvement.
'Plain and simple – they tried to extort Taylor by threatening to release private information about her so that she would support a narrative that she was not a part of,' our source added.
In a statement to People magazine, Gottlieb described the suggestion that Lively's lawyers had threatened Swift as 'categorically false.'
Lively's lawyers later filed a motion asking the court to strike the accusations from its docket as 'baseless, unnecessary, improper and abusive.' The motion to dismiss the letter was granted.
However, the drama sheds further light on the collapse of the pair's close friendship, which has gone cold amid the actress's high-stakes lawsuit.
The drama began last December when Lively, 37, accused Baldoni, her It Ends With Us co-star and director, of sexual harassment and coordinating a smear campaign against her.
Baldoni, 41, hit back in January, with a $400 million countersuit accusing Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds, 48, of defamation.
All parties have denied the allegations. Last week, the defamation element of Baldoni's lawsuit was scrapped by a judge, although he is still suing for civil extortion and invasion of privacy among other claims.
But contained in Baldoni's filing were screenshots of alleged text messages, in which Lively regularly mentioned Swift by name.
And she is not the only Swift to be dragged in: last week the Daily Mail revealed the subpoena against her had been withdrawn because Baldoni's team had managed to acquire the information they were seeking – from none other than her dad Scott, 73; The pair pictured May 18 in NYC
In one now infamous and toe-curling exchange, Lively appeared to refer to herself as the character Khaleesi – from Game of Thrones – and to Swift as one of her 'dragons.'
Elsewhere in Baldoni's filing is the claim that Swift was present at a meeting convened by Lively at her New York penthouse to discuss It Ends With Us script changes.
Sources close to Swift insisted the singer had no knowledge of the meeting and simply turned up to find it underway.
Nonetheless, the whole furor reportedly left Swift - who is godmother to Lively's three daughters – feeling 'exploited' by her pal of ten years.
Scott, a former stockbroker and financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, has long been credited as smoothing his daughter's path to financial success.
A disclosure with the Securities and Exchange Commission lists him as linked to 10 companies affiliated with his daughter, according to Bloomberg.
Last year, he was accused of assaulting a photographer who was 'waiting' for Swift's arrival off a luxury yacht in Sydney following the Australian leg of her Eras Tour.
In a statement to Daily Mail Australia at the time, a rep for Swift described the photographers as 'aggressive' and her father later avoided charges.
Scott isn't the only member of Swift's inner circle to defend the pop star amid the legal drama.
Her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, recently unfollowed Ryan Reynolds on Instagram while supermodel Gigi Hadid, another of Swift's closest friends, has reportedly 'iced out' Lively in solidarity.
In a statement released to the Daily Mail, a spokesman for Lively accused Baldoni's lawyers of repeatedly attempting to drag Swift into the case and attempting to 'exploit' her popularity.
It continued: 'The Court outright denied the Wayfarer Parties' motion to compel documents from Ms. Lively, who has produced far more documents in this case than the Wayfarer Parties combined.
'Further, the Court's protective order ruling rests on the Wayfarer Parties' admission that they received nothing from Taylor Swift, which is exactly the opposite of what their 'insider' claimed two weeks ago.
As for the rest, Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer parties demanded access to Taylor Swift's private communications—despite having already subpoenaed and then withdrawn that subpoena.
Baldoni's desire to drag Taylor Swift into this has been constant dating back to August 2024, when the crisis PR firm led by Melissa Nathan included her in their 'Scenario Planning' document (Lively Amended Complaint, Exhibit D), referred to her as a bully, and called for a strategy to influence the 'TS fan base '.
We will continue to call out Baldoni's relentless efforts to exploit Ms Swift's popularity, which from day one has been nothing more than a distraction from the serious sexual harassment and retaliation accusations he and the Wayfarer parties are facing.

How to pull off summer's no make-up look
No make-up make-up is the ultimate beauty oxymoron. Don't expect it to involve fewer products or any less money, but it will most definitely leave you looking your best without seeming overly made-up. In other words, it is perfect for long summer days and lazy holidays. Here's what really works. Stila All About The Blur StickNow this is a little stick of magic that goes on clear, mattifies and gives a soft-focus finish but without pigment. Use on shiny T-zones on warmer days and watch pores, unwanted shine and sweat disappear. £28.50; Merit The Uniform Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF50This tinted sunscreen has taken the beauty cognoscenti by storm this summer. Why? Because it truly works on all skin shades and gives a flattering finish, especially on sensitive and oilier skin. It's not a primary SPF but ideal for an added layer of sun protection. It looks great on the go, comes in 15 shades and is a multifunction summertime saver. £34; Erborian CC CrèmeSeeing is believing with this little beauty from the wildly popular Korean brand. It goes on looking like a moisturiser yet turns to a lightly pigmented, Instagram-esque 'Paris filter' for your face. Just recently it has been reduced in price. It comes in four shades but more are promised later this year. I tested this on This Morning and every male presenter wanted to take one home. Your skin on its best day in a tube. £38; • Caroline Hirons: Britain's most powerful beauty expert House of Hur Moist Ampoule BlusherThis is the serum soft-tint liquid blusher that took TikTok by storm as the much more reasonably priced alternative to Armani. It comes in three shades and is gorgeous: super-flattering and sheer, it blends Korean hydrating skincare with a hint of a tint. £15; Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek StainThis lip balm goes on sheer but reacts to the pH of your lips to create a flattering, slightly intensified version of your lip colour. What's more, it acts as a lipcare balm at the same time to stave off the threat of dry, parched lips. £35, in four shades; Chanel Les Beiges Water-Fresh TintChanel has trouble keeping this in stock the minute the sun shines because it is such a cult product. It adds a hint of a tint, a hit of hydration and a healthy glow. Add concealer for more coverage, but this is the type of base you can wear on the beach and not look as if you're wearing a scrap of make-up (just great skin). £55, in eight shades; 19/99 Lash Tint MascaraNow this is clever: a mascara that is so subtle it can be worn in your brows too. It looks more like a lash tint as it adds colour but no volume or length, for a really natural and pretty look. It's tubing too, so no telltale smudges on hot and sweaty days. Better yet, it will rinse away with just warm water when you want. This is a brilliant Canadian brand that specialises in multipurpose products that are affordable too. £14, in three shades; • Read more beauty product reviews and advice from our experts Wonderskin FYP Translucent PowderI don't care how natural you look, you never want to be sweaty or shiny, and this totally translucent powder will work over even the most subtle base and on any skin tone. I discovered this when chatting to the make-up legend Val Garland, who keeps it in her SOS kit on set both for her own face when filming Glow Up and for models on cover shoots. £18; Glossier Shadow Stick Sometimes you need just a touch of shadow to define the eye in the lash line and in the crease of both eyes. This comes in five shades with music-themed names: try Riff for contouring – it's the ideal neutral shade that creates shadow and definition, blends easily, stays in place and doesn't really look like eyeshadow. £22; Find @nadinebaggott on Instagram and YouTube where she answers all your beauty questions

Newly-single Elma Pazar shows off her sizzling figure in a tiny pink bikini as she parties with Chloe Ferry and Liberty Poole at Shein event in Ibiza
Newly-single Elma Pazar turned heads in Ibiza on Friday as she partied alongside Chloe Ferry and Liberty Poole at a glamorous Shein event at O Beach. It comes just hours after MailOnline revealed that the TOWIE star, 32, has split from her Love Island boyfriend Sammy Root after just four months of dating. The pair, who both appear on The Only Way Is Essex, are said to have filmed 'raw and emotional' scenes for the upcoming series, which are due to air later this year. Wasting no time dwelling on heartbreak, Elma jetted off with a bunch of stars to the White Isle with fashion giant Shein. For the Takeover event at the celebrity hot spot, she made sure to show Sammy, 24, what he's missing as she donned a skimpy baby pink bikini that flaunted her enviable figure. The reality star paired it with a matching sheer mesh skirt and added inches to her slender frame with a pair of gold wedges. Meanwhile, Chloe, 29, brought the heat in a black bikini adorned with gold hardware and mesh skirt. Liberty, 25, wowed in a baby pink floral three-piece ensemble as she showed off her stunning curves. Also at the sun-soaked event were fellow Love Island stars Danica Taylor, Kaz Crossley, and Samantha Kenny. Elma and Sammy, who reached the ITV2 final in February, recently ended their romance, leaving just one relationship formed on the latest All Stars still going strong. MailOnline understands that Sammy and Elma ended their four-month relationship over rows which took place in Portugal during filming of the latest TOWIE series. Their flirtation began on the ITVBe show but Elma insisted ahead of returning to Love Island in January that a romance between her and Sammy would be off the cards after she admitted to falling into the 'habit of going back to the same people.' Despite their eight-year age difference, the couple reconnected on All Stars and reached the final, missing out on the £50,000 prize fund to Gabby Allen and Casey O'Gorman, who also split earlier this year. Following recent breakups from Harriett Blackmore and Ronnie Vint, as well as Ekin-Su and Curtis Pritchard, the last remaining couple from this year's All Stars series is Grace Jackson and Luca Bish. Meanwhile, Chloe, 29, brought the heat in a black bikini adorned with gold hardware and mesh skirt A source close to the couple told MailOnline: 'Sammy and Elma have called it quits. 'They split during filming of TOWIE's latest series in Portugal and the breakdown of their relationship has been captured for the show. 'It was always a gamble, particularly on Elma's part, to pursue their romance especially even their age difference. 'Sadly, everything has now fallen apart and they're not even on speaking terms.' A TOWIE insider added: 'It's not been a straightforward split between Elma and Sammy. 'Viewers will see how they navigate their feelings, as they discuss their issues to see whether they can make their relationship work going forward. 'They have a strong connection with each other and nobody really knows what will happen with them over the coming weeks. Throughout the series, which is currently being filmed, their story features some of the rawest and emotional reality TV ever shot for TOWIE.' Sammy previously won Love Island with ex-girlfriend Jess Harding in 2023 but their relationship didn't last long. MailOnline has contacted Elma and Sammy's representatives for comment. It was reported that Jess would confront Sammy on this year's All Stars series, but she pulled out of her appearance after meeting someone new. Elma is currently enjoying time away in Ibiza with fast fashion brand Shein while Sammy shared Instagram stories from Ireland. The Essex star first appeared on series five of Love Island in 2019, strutting into the villa as a bombshell alongside Maura Higgins. She was unsuccessful in finding love during her first villa stint but fell for Sammy during the All Stars series. Elma isn't a stranger to having her relationships play out on TOWIE after previously romancing co-star James Diags Bennewith. She told MailOnline ahead of All Stars: 'I do feel ready for a committed relationship; I want a fella. I want to be with someone. To do Love Island again the second time round especially five years later now I'm so much older, to go in there with no actual real want to meet someone is very stupid and embarrassing. 'I know I want to go in there and meet someone. I am very open.'

Gossip Girl star reveals why they're scared to watch show amid Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni's legal battle
The CW teen drama Gossip Girl won the hearts of young adults across the nation when it premiered in 2007. It made stars out of its stunning cast, which included Blake Lively — who is now embroiled in a legal battle with Justin Baldoni — Chace Crawford, Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick, Taylor Momsen, and Leighton Meester. Now, the 39-year-old Chace is admitting that he's scared to sit down for a rewatch of the original Gossip Girl. 'I haven't really rewatched any of it,' he told People. 'I'd be terrified. It's a bit embarrassing.' While promoting his fashion line American Dream Clubhouse, he revealed that he worried digging into the show would dredge up bad memories of how he once dealt poorly with fame. 'As a young man, you take yourself too seriously. I think everything's so precious, and you want to be this Marlon Brando,' Chace explained. 'And I think there gets a point too in a show that's popular where you get your sense of identity and who you are kind of becomes wrapped up in not just that character or the character's popularity, but the show.' Now, 39-year-old Chace Crawford is looking back at his time on the series and he has revealed why he's scared to sit down for a re-watch; pictured in May Crawford reflected about rising to fame, 'Some actor quoted like, "Anyone who gets famous is an a**hole for two years in their own way." It can affect people in a really weird way. And it probably made me a bit more paranoid at the time.' The actor also acknowledged the continued cultural relevance of Gossip Girl, which spawned a short-lived reboot in 2021. 'In a way it's kind of become almost classic. It really was of its time, though. It was just before social media, a little bit ahead of its time in that regard. 'But in watching, it's very campy. I forget how kind of campy it was. It's kind of fun in that way,' he told the outlet. Chace explained, 'It's the music too. Before it aired, they gave me a copy of the pilot to my parents, and my mom and dad probably watched it 20 times. Those songs from the pilot are so ingrained.' Asked what wisdom he would share with his younger self, the star said: 'I would just kind of tell myself to have fun, relax, everything's going to be OK, and it's just not holding on too tightly to your career or what you want to do and just have fun with it because you can kind of take yourself [too] seriously.' Crawford's former Gossip Girl costar Blake Lively is currently wrapped up in a nasty court battle with her It Ends With Us costar and director Justin Baldoni. The two butted heads while filming the romantic drama last year, and things turned litigious in December when the actress sued the actor for alleged sexual harassment and engineering a retaliatory smear campaign. This week Lively suffered a setback in the case when a New York judge denied her attorneys' application for a protective order seeking to block her text messages with Taylor Swift from being entered as evidence. Baldoni's team has subpoenaed Lively for text messages, emails and any other messages between herself and the singer. The Jane The Virgin actor's lawyers will now be allowed to pore through the text trail, with all communications related to It Ends With Us set for scrutiny. Last December, Blake outlined work opportunities that she allegedly due to Baldoni in her explosive lawsuit against him. One of the missed work gigs listed was hosting the season 50 premiere of Saturday Night Live in September, which aired the month after the film was released. 'The effects on Ms. Lively's professional life were immediate and substantial,' said the suit. 'Given the ongoing nature of the campaign and the associated negative public sentiment, Ms. Lively did not believe she could proceed with public appearances or events without being forced to openly discuss what happened on set,' the filing stated.
