New Orleans unveils murals, public art for Super Bowl

Axios29-01-2025

As we count down to Super Bowl LIX and New Orleans construction crews wrap up new roadways and sidewalks, artists are also finishing a number of projects that'll showcase more of the city's uniqueness.
Why it matters: Many of the projects, including murals across downtown, will be ones that residents get to enjoy far past the game on Feb. 9.
The big picture: The NFL and city officials have promised that Super Bowl LIX will benefit the city financially while also raising the profile of the people who make it so special.
Some of those efforts started early.
Tahj Williams, Queen of the Golden Eagles Black Masking Indian Tribe, designed the official logo, the first time the NFL tapped a host city artist for the purpose. She also contributed to additional brand design elements. Go deeper.
Plus, the NFL Shop tapped three local designers for its Origins merch collection.
The latest: Brandan "BMIKE" Odums, Carl Joe Williams and Annie Moran are among the artists who created more than a dozen downtown murals in time for the Super Bowl crowds.
📍 Duncan Plaza: BMIKE's works include one on the HEAL parking garage, facing Duncan Plaza and City Hall. The project includes a portrait of his grandfather.
"This wall has tempted me for many years," the artist wrote on Instagram. "I pray it serves as a reminder that the everyday people of New Orleans are giants."
📍 Girod Street: BMIKE worked with his youth programming group Eternal Seeds on a mural on the side of the Hyatt Regency on Girod Street.
📍 Loyola at Poydras: Carl Joe Williams' multi-part mural is under production production on the Orleans Parish Civil Courthouse.
📍 Girod Street overpass: Moran's mural, "The Welcoming Committee," spans the Girod Street overpass and features a Black Masking Indian queen with her arms outstretched in welcome.
📍 Marriott Hotel: A Shepard Fairey mural is in the works on Canal Street.
📍 WDSU: A Keith Duncan mural inspired by Plaquemines Parish is in the works on Howard Avenue.
📍 Entergy substation: Patrick Henry is working on a mural at the bottom of Canal Street along the Entergy substation. The work depicts a trumpet player and a rainbow of musical color.
📍 I-10: Apple commissioned young artists to create a mural along the lakeside stretch of I-10 near the city jail.
📍 100 blocks of the French Quarter: Seven murals are in the works for the first blocks off Canal Street going into the Quarter. They include installations on Decatur, Chartres, Bourbon and Royal streets.
Super Bowl light shows
What we're watching: Temporary light installations are also part of the Super Bowl decor, a press release says. They will appear on the Caesars Superdome and projected on the St. Louis Cathedral.
The Superdome light show will start at dusk Feb. 1, lighting up the sky with over 25 million lux. It'll run through Feb. 9.
The St. Louis Cathedral project will begin at 6:30pm Feb. 2, with half-hour shows with designs from local artists Becky Fos, James Michalopoulos, Terrance Osborne, George Rodrigue and Hunt Slonem. That project will take 13 laser projectors and include a locally inspired soundtrack.
Plus, watch for the Crescent City Connection's new lights to be on theme for the week, too.

George Kittle Reacts to Sam LaPorta's Major Personal Announcement

George Kittle Reacts to Sam LaPorta's Major Personal Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Sam LaPorta is heading into his third season as a star tight end for the Detroit Lions, looking to build off two impressive campaigns to begin his NFL career. Advertisement In 33 regular-season game appearances for the Lions, LaPorta reeled in 146 catches for 1,615 yards and 17 touchdowns. The former second-round draft pick will now look to continue that impressive production in Detroit's upcoming 2025 season. Off the field, LaPorta has had a busy offseason following Year 2 in the NFL. This past Saturday, the 24-year-old tight end married his longtime partner Callahan Dellinger. LaPorta and his newly-wed wife shared the news of their wedding ceremony with a joint Instagram post on Sunday. "A house built on rock.6/14/25," the couple wrote. Friends flooded the comments section with reactions to this news. One of the most notable reactions was from San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle. Advertisement "Congrats !!" Kittle wrote in the comments. LaPorta and Kittle both famously played their college football careers as standout tight ends for the Iowa Hawkeyes. I think Laporta's the best tight end in the draft class. I think the Lions got a complete steal," Kittle said after Detroit selected LaPorta with the No. 34 pick in the 2023 NFL draft. "I like the other tight ends too, but I spent two weeks training with Sam LaPorta, and the way he moves -- oh yeah, he's got the dog in him. He's kind of quirky, he's kind of goofy, too. He's going to fit in well.' LaPorta and the Lions will kickoff their 2025 regular-season schedule with a Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sep. 7. Shanahan's Favorite Rapper Name-Drops Rival Coach on New Album

Shanahan's Favorite Rapper Name-Drops Rival Coach on New Album originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kyle Shanahan is a huge Lil Wayne fan. So much so, that the San Francisco 49ers head coach reportedly named his son Carter after the rapper, whose full name is Dwayne Carter Jr. Advertisement When Lil Wayne released his new album, Tha Carter VI, you bet Shanahan was excited to tune in. But he might've been blindsided by the record's second track, "Welcome to Tha Carter", where "Weezy" drops a line about a particular NFL coach. "Smokin' that bomb LA like I'm McVay." Shanahan goes way back with Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay, and the latter just picked up another edge on his buddy by getting name dropped in song. Not to mention by Shanahan's favorite artist. That's brutal. The rest of McVay's resume also includes another bullet point that Shanahan is desperately pursuing: a Super Bowl title. Advertisement In 2021, McVay's Rams defeated Shanahan's 49ers in the NFC Championship game to advance and play the Cincinnati Bengals in the big game. Los Angeles would win Super Bowl LVI in their home SoFi Stadium 23-20. If Shanahan needed any more motivation after last year's 6-11 record, this call out to his division rival should do the trick. The 49ers have all the weapons to return to contention as long as they stay healthy. Christian McCaffrey is poised to return with vengeance. Cornerstones Brock Purdy, Fred Warner and George Kittle are locked down long term. And once Brandon Aiyuk returns near mid-season, the arsenal will be fully loaded to make a deep run. If the 49ers can capture that elusive Super Bowl championship, maybe Lil Wayne will check the next thing off Shanahan's bucket list with a shoutout. Advertisement The NFC West rival Rams won't be a slouch, coming off a 10-7 season and playoff win. They also reinforced their receiving unit by adding Davante Adams. The 49ers and Rams will first meet in Week 5 on Thursday Night Football in LA. Grab your popcorn. And turn the speakers up. Tom Brady embodies inner-heel, rips up Eli Manning jersey

Who would have ever thought legendary quarterback Tom Brady and World Wrestling Entertainment champion John Cena would both go heel (turn into a bad guy) in the same year? Brady made a grand entrance at Fanatics Fest in New York City on Friday. The event had a mini WWE entrance set, and the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback entered to former WWE champion Cody Rhodes' theme. Brady came onstage and posed with the title on his shoulder. He then slowly made his way down the ramp, stopping to snatch a Sauce Gardner jersey from someone in the crowd, slamming it on the ground and spitting on it. As he made his way further down the ramp, he was handed an Eli Manning jersey. He held the jersey up for everyone to see and then ripped it in half. "Let's go," Brady yelled out to the crowd. Manning then came out of nowhere, jumped on Brady's back and rode him back up the ramp. It served as the perfect entertainment to kick-start the three-day event. Fanatics Fest NYC is a massive gathering featuring sports and collectibles. Fans from all over the world travel to the event to buy, sell and trade. They also have an opportunity to meet their favorite athletes and get exclusive merchandise. Brady seemed to be in his element playing the villain role in the world of professional wrestling. His former teammate, Rob Gronkowski, had a Wrestlemania moment back in April 2017. Perhaps it's time for Brady to do the same. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
