Community angry as rape suspect escapes from police custody
KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a manhunt for a rape suspect who escaped from police custody on Monday night.
Police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said the 28-year-old was arrested by Mariannhill police in connection with several rapes which he allegedly committed at Ekhombe policing area near Nkandla.
'The suspect was to be transported to a correctional facility when he complained of an asthma attack and fainted,' said Netshiunda. W hen the police were assisting him he escaped and ran through the darkness.
'A dedicated team has been established to hunt him down,' said Netshiunda.
On Monday, KwaZulu-Natal premier Thami Ntuli had commended citizens for unifying against gender-based violence by playing a decisive role in tracking and apprehending the rape suspect linked to multiple rape cases in the Bizimali area in Nkandla.
'This arrest is powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when community stands against violence. I applaud the courage of those who spoke out, the determination of our law enforcement officers and the resilience of Bizimali community,' said Ntuli.
A distraught member of the school governing body, who identified himself as Mathonsi, expressed disappointment at the escape of the suspect.
'The children are also disappointed with what happened because after hearing about the suspect having been arrested they were happy. In fact they celebrated throughout the night,' said Mathonsi.
Bhekisizwe Taxi Association member Silomo Ntuli, who was part of the search team which apprehended the suspect, said they were disappointed by how the suspect had escaped from police custody.
'The reason we were involved with the whole thing is that we are part of the community. The school learners who live on the outlying cottages in Bizimali play a huge role in our livelihood especially since we know the plight of joblessness in country,' he said.
Ntuli said after a meeting which brought together the school principal, parents and members of the school governing body, the community had taken a decision to intervene.
This prompted them to go to Durban where they located the suspect.
'Before we located him we had gone to his brother and he told us his whereabouts.'
The provincial education department, in a statement on Tuesday, said MEC Sipho Hlomuka is expected to visit the school on Thursday.

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli has been summoned to appear before the Portfolio Committee on Office of the Premier, Community Safety and Liaison to give clarity on allegations that the youth manager in his office threatened to physically harm the former director general, Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize. 'We fully support the Youth Fund initiative established by the former ANC premier, Numusa Dube-Ncube, to empower young people to thrive in business and contribute meaningfully to the economy. 'However, we categorically reject the misuse of these funds to benefit non-compliant applicants or those selected based on political affiliation. 'We demand an immediate halt to this process and call for a transparent, merit-based review to ensure funds serve their intended purpose of uplifting KZN's youth,' said Mabude. She added that the youth manager in question is alleged to have pressured Mkhize to approve these funds to benefit his political allies and associates, undermining the integrity of the Youth Fund. 'We will not tolerate government officials perpetuating GBV and escaping accountability. 'South African women and youth live in constant fear due to harassment and abuse, and the premier's office has failed to address these serious allegations,' said Mabude. Five suspects killed in two separate shoot-outs with police in KZN
Five suspects were killed in two separate shoot-outs with police in Inanda in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said in the first incident, police operationalised intelligence about the whereabouts of a wanted suspect and he was cornered along the Etafuleni main road. 'The suspect opened fire at police officers and a shoot-out ensued. During the shoot-out, the suspect, who was wanted for murder, three counts of attempted murder and business robbery, was fatally wounded. He was found in possession of a firearm,' Netshiunda said on Saturday. In another incident, police followed up intelligence about suspects wanted for murder, attempted murder and house robbery in and around Inanda. 'Police pounced on the suspects at the cottages on Dr Langalibalele Road in Inanda. Upon realising the presence of police officers, the suspects started shooting at police officers and police retaliated. After the shoot-out, four suspects were found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Three firearms, the serial numbers of which were filed off, were found in the possession of the suspects.
