Dr Wan Azizah visits fire victims in Bandar Tun Razak

KUALA LUMPUR: Bandar Tun Razak Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today visited seven families affected by a recent fire in her constituency through the Ziarah Kasih MADANI programme.
Dr Wan Azizah, who is also the Prime Minister's wife, handed over cash contributions from the Bandar Tun Razak Parliamentary Office and the Cheras and Bandar Tun Razak Social Welfare Department (JKM), as well as essential supplies from the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council.
'We hope these contributions will help ease the burden of those affected by the unfortunate incident,' she said after presenting the aid at the temporary relief centre at Dewan Serbaguna Bandar Tun Razak here today.
Also present were the Prime Minister's political secretary Datuk Azman Abidin and Kuala Lumpur JKM director Che Samsuzuki Che Noh.
The families were relocated to the centre after their homes were destroyed in a fire at Lorong Mewah 3, Bandar Tun Razak on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, Azman said efforts were being made to secure housing for the affected families in newly completed units under Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in the Bandar Tun Razak area.
'We estimate it will take about one to two weeks to obtain the DBKL homes, so the families will not have to remain in the temporary centre for too long, and their children can continue attending school. God willing, we are doing our best to ensure their comfort,' he said.
One of the fire victims, Junainah Ismail, 47, who works with the Federal Territories Department of Statistics, expressed her gratitude to Dr Wan Azizah and all agencies involved for visiting.
'I feel relieved knowing there are people who care about our situation. I hope the authorities will help us secure a new home soon,' she said.

DBKL mulls patching potholes with plastic waste

Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said DBKL had carried out pilot tests in industrial areas to evaluate the material's durability. 'Compared to the commonly used material, namely bitumen, plastic is cheaper and more durable. 'We will implement this approach at facilities maintained by DBKL, such as playgrounds and bicycle lanes.' She said this after visiting Taman Tasik Titiwangsa to inspect several upgrading projects using recovered materials. Among these were parking bays which had been resurfaced using crushed glass. This was a project undertaken by a local start-up. The mayor said these projects were part of City Hall's push to­­wards green initiatives and sustainability. 'This is in line with our vision to make Kuala Lumpur a zero-waste city. 'We are not just planting trees, we are making active efforts towards sustainability,' she said. City Hall was hoping to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, she said. Maimunah said DBKL spent RM260mil a year on mana­ging waste, with 40% of that for collection costs. 'This is a huge cost which can otherwise go to­­wards upgrading markets and playgrounds.' Maimunah then elaborated on plans to designate some areas in Kuala Lumpur as zero-waste zones. On May 15, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa announced that busy spots in the capital would be earmarked for this purpose as part of a larger effort to reduce waste and make the capital more environmentally friendly. Maimunah said DBKL was work­­ing to identify local communities in Kuala Lumpur's 11 parliamentary constituencies for the initiative. 'We plan on collaborating with those who are actively working on recycling initiatives. 'We prefer to work with those who are willing participants, to ensure optimal results,' she said. Also present at the event were Ecocycle Dynamic Solutions Sdn Bhd director Datuk Seri Wan Mohd Fauzi Wan Kamaruddin and Renergy Bumi Hijau Sdn Bhd business development director Sumeshini Subra­­maniam.

Anwar presents contribution to poor single mother in Kuantan

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today handed over a donation to a single mother, Nabimah Mohammed, who lives in poverty in Kampung Tebing Tinggi, Balok, Kuantan. The donation was presented by the Prime Minister's political secretary Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi when he visited the woman's home as part of 'Ziarah Kasih MADANI' programme. Ahmad Farhan said that apart from having health problems such as high blood pressure and a history of thyroid disease, Nabimah also faced difficulties living in a dilapidated house with a leaky roof. 'We will look into the appropriate form of assistance to ease the burden and improve the condition of her home,' he said in a Facebook post that was also shared by the Prime Minister today. Ahmad Farhan hoped that the assistance would be able to give new hope to the single mother who had been struggling in silence for a long time.
