Death toll in Air India crash rises to at least 279
AHMEDABAD: The death toll from the fiery crash of a London-bound passenger jet in an Indian city climbed to 279 on Saturday (Jun 14) as officials sought to match the DNA of victims with their grieving relatives.
The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner issued a mayday call shortly before it crashed around lunchtime on Thursday, bursting into a fireball as it hit residential buildings.
A police source said on Saturday that 279 bodies had been found at the crash site in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, making it one of the worst plane disasters of the 21st century.
"Nobody can fill the void left by loss," said Imtiyaz Ali, whose younger brother boarded the plane.
"I can't even begin to explain what's going on inside me," he told AFP.
There was just one survivor out of 242 passengers and crew on board the jet when it crashed, leaving the tailpiece of the aircraft jutting out of a hostel for medical staff.
Emergency services kept up their recovery efforts on Saturday, extracting a badly burnt body from the tailpiece before cranes were used to remove the wreckage.
At least 38 people were killed on the ground.
"I saw my child for the first time in two years, it was a great time," said Anil Patel, whose son and daughter-in-law had surprised him with a visit before boarding the Air India flight.
"And now, there is nothing," he said, breaking down in tears. "Whatever the gods wanted has happened."
SEARCH FOR BLACK BOX
The first body of a passenger to be handed over to relatives was placed in a white coffin on Saturday before being transported in an ambulance with a police escort, footage from the state government showed.
Air India said there were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members.
The official casualty number will not be finalised until the slow process of DNA identification is completed.
Those killed ranged from a top politician to a teenage tea seller.
The lone survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, said even he could not explain how he survived.
"Initially, I too thought that I was about to die, but then I opened my eyes and realised that I was still alive," Ramesh, a British citizen, told national broadcaster DD News from his hospital bed.
Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said on Friday that a flight data recorder, or black box, had been recovered, saying it would "significantly aid" investigations.
Forensic teams are still looking for the second black box, as they probe why the plane crashed after lifting barely 100m from the ground.
United States planemaker Boeing said it was in touch with Air India and stood "ready to support them" over the incident, which a source close to the case said was the first crash for a 787 Dreamliner.

However, by the time he finalized the booking, he had no choice but to select two separate seats located in row 11. Ramesh said: "If we had been sat together we both might have survived. I tried to get two seats together but someone had already got one. Me and Ajay would have been sitting together. "But I lost my brother in front of my eyes. So now I am constantly thinking 'Why can't I save my brother?'" Narrow Escape Ramesh, who was seated near one of the aircraft's emergency exits, managed to escape by crawling through a gap in the mangled fuselage of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. His brother Ajay, seated in 11J, was killed along with 240 other passengers and crew members. Ramesh even tried to get back to the burning aircraft to save his brother but he was stopped by emergency workers. Emergency worker Satinder Singh Sandhu said: "I walked nearer to Mr Ramesh, grabbed him by the arm and led him away to a waiting ambulance. I had no idea that he was a passenger on the plane and thought he was a resident of the hostel or a passerby. "He was very disoriented and shocked and was limping. There was also blood on his face, but he was able to speak. "He told the paramedics that he was flying to London when the plane fell and that he wanted to go back to save his family." Vishwash, with bandages on his face, was seen yesterday carrying his brother's coffin during a funeral ceremony held in Gujarat. Later, he broke down in grief and had to be escorted away.

Air India says plane 'well-maintained' before crash
NEW DELHI: Air India's Boeing plane was "well-maintained" before it crashed a week ago, killing all but one of 242 people on board, the airline said Thursday (Jun 19). Indian authorities are yet to detail what caused the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner to hurtle to the ground in the western city of Ahmedabad, where at least 38 people were also left dead. Indian canteen worker's hopes dashed, no second miracle in air crash
AHMEDABAD, India - Ravi Thakor had been hoping his mother and two-year old daughter had escaped just before an Air India jet crashed into the building they were in. A week after one of the world's worst aviation disasters killed more than 270 people in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, Thakor's hopes were dashed when doctors matched his DNA on Wednesday with the remains of his mother Sarla and daughter Aadhya. A canteen worker in a college hostel, Thakor and other family members had left the hostel around 30 minutes before Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft crashed into the building. Sarla had stayed back, cooking and looking after Aadhya, who was asleep. Thakor and his wife Lalita searched for them in hospitals and the morgue after the crash. After not finding them for days, they said they were hoping for a "second miracle", referring to the lone passenger aboard the plane who survived the disaster. On Thursday, the dead bodies were handed over to Thakor's family for the final rites. "We are going to cremate my mother and daughter. It is very difficult for me to say anything right now, but at least we know what happened to them," Thakor said, struggling to speak. At least 211 DNA samples had been matched, and 189 dead bodies handed over to families, Rakesh Joshi, the medical superintendent at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital told reporters on Thursday.
