"Will move SC to challenge DDA's demarcation of properties in Batla House area": AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan

New Delhi [India], June 12 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan on Thursday said he would move the Supreme Court to challenge the Delhi Development Authority's (DDA) demarcation of properties in the Batla House area of Okhla.
The move followed directions from the High Court's Division Bench, which granted affected residents three days to file individual writ petitions.
This comes a day after Khan withdrew his Public Interest Litigation (PIL) from the Delhi High Court that had sought to stop demolition action initiated by the DDA.
Speaking to ANI, the AAP MLA said, 'The Division Bench has given time for the affected parties to file their writ individually within three days. We have also withdrawn our PIL. People have been living there since 1971, and you suddenly declared it unauthorised and separated it from the PM-UDAY scheme.'
'...The manner in which DDA wants to demolish this entire area is beyond my understanding...The demarcation done by them is not accurate. I withdrew my plea because I will challenge the demarcation before the Supreme Court,' he said.
Khan withdrew the PIL on Wednesday to inform the residents of his area to file an appropriate petition before the court.
The withdrawal was allowed by a division bench of Justices Girish Kathpalia and Tejas Karia of the Delhi High Court, which suggested that individual residents approach the court with their grievances.
'In furtherance of the last order, senior counsel on the instructions of briefing counsel seeks permission to withdraw the petition filed by the petitioner, who is a public-spirited person, so he can inform the residents of Batla House to file an appropriate petition before the court,' the High Court said.
At the outset of the hearing, the High Court noted that some aggrieved individuals have already been given protection by the court after hearing their individual petitions.
The High Court at the beginning emphasised that any adverse order while deciding the PIL may affect the rights of the individuals who are already before the single-judge bench.
The court has also emphasised that any aggrieved individual may approach the court like other people who have already approached the court. This issue is not a subject matter of the PIL.
Khan had filed a PIL challenging the notice issued by the DDA for the demolition of alleged illegal properties in the area of Batla House in Okhla.
The High Court on Monday had refused to grant an immediate interim stay on the demolition, which was proposed for June 11.
Earlier, the apex court on May 7 refused to grant relief and directed the demolition of the illegal properties.
Senior advocate Salman Khurshid appeared for the petitioner and argued that they (DDA) are pasting notices on the properties which fall beyond the khasra no. 279. The order of the Supreme Court was regarding the illegal properties within this khasra.
The counsel for respondents contended, on the other hand, that the PIL is not maintainable as the Supreme Court specifically directed that the individual aggrieved persons adopt the legal remedy.
DDA's counsel also said that the notices issued by the DDA are not generic and are in compliance with the Supreme Court. All the notices were given 15 days to respond. No demolition was carried out during the notice period. (ANI)

Earlier this month, Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari was disqualified from the state Assembly after he was convicted to two years of imprisonment in a three-year-old hate speech case. Abbas, son of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari who died in Banda jail last year, was the Mau Sadar MLA of the Om Prakash Rajbhar-led Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), which was earlier allied with the Samajwadi Party (SP) but is now in the ruling BJP-led NDA. Following Abbas's disqualification, the 403-member UP House has seen six disqualifications since its constitution after February-March 2022 Assembly elections – the highest in recent years despite nearly two years of its term still remaining. Among the other legislators disqualified since 2022 are three SP and two BJP MLAs. During the full five years of the previous UP Assembly, from 2017 to 2022, a total of four MLAs were disqualified: three from the BJP and one from the SP. MPs and MLAs are disqualified under Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which mandates disqualification of convicts for six years in certain cases, including convictions for any offence that has a prison sentence of two or more years. While the principal Opposition SP has called the disqualification of its MLAs 'vendetta politics', the BJP has pointed out that the disqualifications happened in the wake of court trials and convictions. Speaking to The Indian Express, SP spokesperson and Lok Sabha MP Rajeev Rai said, 'This is nothing but vindictive politics against our leaders due to the arrogance of power of the BJP government. This is a blatant misuse of power.' Hitting back, BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said the disqualifications have happened after 'due process'. 'The disqualifications have happened under the Representation of the People Act after convictions by courts. Does the SP not trust our democracy and judiciary that they are raising such questions?' Tripathi asked. Here is a look at the disqualifications of six MLAs in the state since 2022. The former SP minister has faced a slew of cases since the BJP came to power in 2017. A total of 87 cases have been registered against Khan in Rampur on various charges, including land-grabbing, cheating and criminal trespass. In some cases, his wife Tanzeen Fatima and son Abdullah Azam Khan are the co-accused. In October 2022, Khan lost his Assembly membership after his conviction in a 2019 hate speech case. The case was lodged based on a complaint by election official Anil Kumar Chauhan, who alleged Khan had 'used foul language for people in constitutional posts, threatened them, and tried to flare a riot' while giving a speech in the Milak Assembly constituency. The FIR against Khan was lodged in April 2019 under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 505(1) (publishing or circulating any statement, rumour or report), as well as Section 125 (promoting enmity between classes in connection with elections) of the Representation of the People Act. The speech in question was made during the campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and SP had contested in an alliance. Bypoll: The bypoll in Khan's seat was held in December 2022, and was won by the BJP's Akash Saxena, his long-time rival. Saxena defeated Khan's confidant and SP candidate Asim Raja by more than 33,000 votes. In November 2022, Saini was disqualified a month after being sentenced to two years of imprisonment in a case related to the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. Saini was disqualified after Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary (then allied with the SP) wrote a letter to UP Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana asking why the seat of convicted MLA had not yet been declared vacant when action was immediately taken in the case of SP MLA Azam Khan. A total of 11 people, including Saini, were convicted under charges relating to rioting, rioting armed with deadly weapons, endangering life or personal safety of others, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and criminal intimidation. Bypoll: In the December 2022 bypoll, RLD candidate Madan Bhaiyya, backed by the SP, defeated Saini's wife and BJP candidate Rajkumari Saini by over 22,143 votes. In February 2023, Abdullah, son of Azam Khan, was disqualified from the Assembly after being sentenced to two years' imprisonment in a 15-year-old case in which Abdullah and his father were booked for blocking traffic after their vehicle was stopped by the police for checking in Moradabad. The incident for which the case was registered against the two leaders occurred a day after the terror attack on the CRPF camp in neighbouring Rampur district in January 2008, which claimed the lives of seven jawans and a rickshaw-puller. The court had convicted the two under IPC sections 341 (wrongful restraint) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), and under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act. This was Abdullah's second disqualification from the Assembly. He was earlier disqualified in 2020 after the Allahabad High Court had set aside his election. Bypoll: In the May 2023 bypoll, the seat was won by BJP ally Apna Dal (Soneylal) candidate Shafeek Ahmed Ansari by 8,724 votes against the SP's Anuradha Chauhan. In December 2023, BJP MLA Ramdular Gond was disqualified after he was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by a Sonbhadra district court in a 2014 rape case involving a 15-year-old girl. He was found guilty under IPC sections for rape, causing disappearance of evidence, and giving false information, and under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The victim's family alleged that over nine years, they faced a lot of pressure and intimidation from the MLA and his associates for withdrawing the case. Bypoll: In June 2024, the seat went to the bypoll, which was won by the SP's Vijay Kumar Singh by 3,208 votes against his rival BJP's Saravan Kumar. In June 2024, Solanki, his younger brother Rizwan, and three others were sentenced to seven years imprisonment for allegedly harassing a woman and setting her house on fire in an attempt to grab her land in the Jajmau area of Kanpur in 2022. This was the first conviction of Solanki, a four-time MLA who has been booked in eight cases since 2022, including charges under the UP Gangsters Act and for forgery. Solanki was subsequently disqualified from the Assembly. Bypoll: In the bypoll held in November 2024, SP candidate Naseem Solanki, Irfan Solanki's wife, won from the Sisamau seat, defeating the BJP's Suresh Awasthi by 8,564 votes. In June, 2025, Abbas Ansari was disqualified after he was sentenced to two years in jail in a case related to a controversial speech in which he allegedly threatened government officials. Abbas, who was elected on the SBSP ticket from Mau Sadar, made the remarks at a public meeting during the 2022 Assembly elections. The case against Abbas was registered by a police official, claiming that in March 2022, he along with some constables had witnessed Abbas and his brother Umar Ansari addressing a crowd of 150 people from a stage and threatening to 'teach a lesson' to the administration officials of Mau after the election, which violated the Model Code of Conduct. Bypoll: The Election Commission (EC) has yet to announce the schedule for this bypoll.

Visakhapatnam sets world record on International Day of Yoga; 3 lakh perform yoga along 28km beach road

Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 22 (ANI): A new Guinness World Record was set on the 11th International Day of Yoga for the largest gathering for a Yoga session in one place in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam on Saturday. Around three lakh people participated in the event, which was organised on a 28-kilometre stretch from RK Beach to Bheemili in the presence of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a post on X, the Ministry of Ayush wrote, 'Main event of IDY 2025 sets Guinness World Record in Visakhapatnam. With an estimated 3 lakh participants, the grand celebration along the 28 km beach road--from RK Beach to Bheemili--and across various parts of Visakhapatnam marked the world's largest gathering for a yoga session at a single venue.' 'Led by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the event was part of the 'Yoga Sangam' initiative, synchronised across 13 lakh+ locations nationwide. A historic morning for yoga and India's global wellness leadership,' it added. Addressing the world's largest-ever yoga gathering, the Prime Minister joined thousands of participants from India and abroad for a historic yoga session by the sea, the Ministry of AYUSH said in a release. As per the release, in the national event, PM Modi was joined by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Abdul Nazeer, and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu. Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ayush and MoS for Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) Prataprao Jadhav were also present alongside Union Minister of State Dr. Chandrasekhar Pemmasani. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan Garu and State Cabinet Minister Nara Lokesh Garu were also present. Extending warm greetings to people across India and the world on International Day of Yoga, the Prime Minister highlighted that this year marks the 11th occasion when the world has come together on 21st June to practice yoga collectively. He remarked that the essence of yoga is 'to unite', and it is heartening to see how yoga has united the world. Reflecting on the journey of Yoga over the past decade, PM Modi recalled the moment when India proposed the idea of International Yoga Day at the United Nations. He noted that 175 countries supported the proposal, a rare instance of such wide global unity. He emphasised that the support was not merely for a proposal but represented a collective effort by the world for the greater good of humanity. 'Eleven years on, yoga has become an integral part of the lifestyle of millions across the globe', he added. After evacuation from Iran, Indians express relief; 827 brought back so far

The Indian government's Operation Sindhu has successfully evacuated 827 Indian nationals from conflict-hit Iran, with the latest flight landing in New Delhi on Saturday. The evacuees, including students and pilgrims, shared their experiences of the tense situation in Iran and praised the efforts of the Indian embassy and government. The evacuation flight from Mashhad, carried 310 Indian nationals, who were safely brought back to the country under Operation Sindhu. Sharing the images of the evacuation, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X, "Another evacuation flight from Mashhad landed in New Delhi at 1630 hrs on 21 June with 310 Indian nationals from Iran. With this, a total of 827 Indians have been evacuated." Nadeem Asgar, an evacuee, told ANI, "I am thankful to my nation for keeping us safe there and bringing us back safely. As soon as the situation went south, we were evacuated by the embassy. I am very thankful to the Indian government." Farzana Abdi echoed similar sentiments, "We are coming back from Iran. There was a lot of fighting and missiles there. The Indian embassy helped us a lot and brought us here. We are very happy to be back in India. India is the best." Riyazul Hasan described the dire situation in Iran, "The situation is not good there. We saw from our hotel window that the missiles were coming, which were being intercepted mid-air. We are relieved to be back here. We came through the embassy. We thank PM Modi." Fatima expressed her gratitude to the Prime Minister, "I am very grateful to PM Modi. Now I feel at peace after coming back to my country. Being back in your homeland is a matter of great joy." Almas Rizvi praised the Indian embassy's support, "We were given accommodation in a good hotel and given lunch, dinner, everything, on time. It feels good to be back in our country. Earlier in the day, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said, a centrifuge manufacturing workshop in the central Iranian city has been struck, making it the third nuclear-related facility targeted in Israeli attacks since June 13, Al Jazeera reported. "We know this facility well. There was no nuclear material at this site and therefore the attack on it will have no radiological consequences," Grossi said in a statement posted by the IAEA.
