Fire breaks out at Sarkarwada, no major damage
Nashik: A fire broke out at Sarkarwada, near the Raviwar Karanja area of Nashik, around 1am on Friday. Fire brigade teams from the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) rushed to the scene and quickly brought the blaze under control.
"We received a call at around 1am on Friday. We immediately sent our team of firemen along with the fire engine, which immediately brought the fire under control," said a fire brigade official. Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire.
Sarkarwada, a state govt-protected monument, houses the office and museum of the state's archaeology department. The building dates back to the 18th century and served as the administrative center during the Peshwa era, making it a site of immense historical and architectural value.
Amol Gote, assistant director of Directorate of Archaeology and Museums (Nanded division), confirmed the incident and praised the prompt response. "Our staff that was also at the office building also made their efforts to bring the fire under control," he said. He added that both the fire brigade and police acted swiftly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
"There was no major damage, but some office furniture and table fans were damaged in the fire.
But all the documents are safe. There was no damage to the museum of the archaeology department as the fire was in the inner premises of the building," Gote said.
Sarkarwada is a two-storied structure spanning 1,304 sq m. It previously served as a police station and now functions as the office of the state archaeological department and a museum. The building has withstood various historical events, including the 1939 floods, when the Godavari River rose high enough to submerge 11 of its steps, prompting the administration to mark a flood line on the wall. Local officials have stated that additional safety measures will now be reviewed to protect the structure from future incidents.

Hazaripahad Rd turns into garbage dumping stretch
1 2 3 Nagpur: As rapid urbanisation spreads to the city's outskirts, Hazaripahad Road — once a clean, quiet stretch — has turned into a garbage dumping ground. With new townships and housing societies mushrooming in the area, vacant plots along the roadside have become hotspots for garbage disposal. Residents say construction debris, plastic waste, and household trash are being dumped regularly in open plots, posing health concerns. Open waste attracts stray animals, emits foul odour, and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising fears of a potential dengue or malaria outbreak. "Every morning, we wake up to a stinking mess. People from nearby buildings just toss their trash over the wall. We've complained multiple times, but no one acts," said Neeta Kale, a resident of one of the newly developed societies in the area. Another resident, Ashfaq Mirza, who moved in six months ago, said what should have been a green patch near his building is now a mountain of rubble and waste. "We were promised a clean and peaceful neighbourhood. What we got instead is a dumping yard that no authority seems to care about. Children can't even play outside," he added. Responding to the growing outrage, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has begun taking action. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sector 36 Gets a Sobha Makeover – Are You Ready to Upgrade? Sobha Realty Book Now Undo Speaking to TOI, deputy commissioner of solid waste management department, Rajesh Bhagat, said that the civic body has identified 240 black spots across Nagpur where illegal dumping is rampant. "These were identified after an intensive, multi-week citywide survey. We have already cleared the first 40 sites, and a phased clean-up of the rest is currently underway," he stated. The civic body has also begun cracking down on unregistered and non-compliant garbage collectors. "Eighty such irregular collectors were caught during the drive and fined RS1,000 each. Many of them were found to be dumping waste at unauthorised spots instead of taking it to designated collection points," Bhagat said. Residents, however, remain skeptical. "We've heard promises before. Unless fines are strictly enforced and pick-up is regular, this problem will keep returning," said Nilesh Zade, a long-time local. While NMC's efforts mark a positive step, the success of the clean-up drive will depend on consistent enforcement and public cooperation.

Many NMC areas get muddy water
Nagpur: Residents from many areas, including Ishwar Nagar, Ashi Nagar, Subhan Nagar, and Digdoh Devi Nagar, are grappling with more than just the scorching summer heat — their taps are gushing brown, foul-smelling, and sometimes algae-laced water, sparking widespread health concerns. Locals allege that despite repeated complaints, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has failed to provide a permanent fix, leaving residents to fend for themselves. "The issue started yesterday when we noticed a strong kerosene-like smell in the tap water," said Nitesh Hatwar, a resident of Nandanvan. "Even today, the water smells the same. It's clearly not safe for drinking. We immediately informed NMC, and they promised to would send tank cleaners and check the pipelines. Until then, we've stopped using tap water completely and are relying on borewell water. A few neighbouring houses are facing the same issue. " Other areas are reporting even more alarming experiences. Shahnawaz Sheikh from Indiramata Nagar described a disturbing ordeal. "Over the past month, we've had several water issues, but this one was the worst. For 2 to 4 days, insects were coming out of the tap water in some houses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch xu hướng AUD/USD? IC Markets Undo People were horrified. We stopped using tap water immediately and had to rely on canned water. We kept complaining, and finally, the NMC resolved the issue after four days — but it left everyone deeply shaken. " Shrikant Waikar, executive engineer, water works department, acknowledged that water contamination is more frequently reported in slum areas or neighbourhoods close to them. "In such places, illegal sewer connections often lead to the contamination of drinking water," he said. Waikar added that the department dispatches a team immediately upon receiving a complaint. "Pinpointing the source of contamination takes time, especially when the leak is underground. If the damage is minor, we repair it on-site. But for recurring or serious problems, we replace the entire pipeline." He urged residents to report issues promptly to avoid escalation into full-blown health crises. (With inputs by N Soumya)

No Re-Encroachments Found Along Nag River, NMC Tells High Court
1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Thursday informed the high court that no fresh encroachments or unauthorised constructions were observed along the banks of Nag River, following a detailed zone-wise survey across the city. In an affidavit submitted by superintending engineer Shweta Banerjee, the civic body informed the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court that the exercise was carried out on the court's direction to ascertain whether earlier cleared stretches were illegally occupied again. "Earlier, 155 encroachments and unauthorised constructions were removed. Fresh inspections conducted by the concerned assistant commissioners across Zones 1 to 10 have not revealed any new or re-emerging encroachments," she stated. The survey followed a directive in the court's May 6 order, instructing the civic body to inspect whether cleared spaces have once again become impediments to water flow in the river. The affidavit adds that all zonal offices were instructed, through an official communication on May 20, to conduct physical inspections. The affidavit was submitted in PIL (No. 56/2023) filed by Ramgopal Bachuka and others through counsel Tushar Mandlekar seeking accountability for the flooding, and timely mitigation measures. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... "The remaining portion will be completed at the earliest," the affidavit noted, citing a June 17 report from the NMC superintending engineer (PWD). The civic body further submitted that it has complied with another court directive — jointly inspecting the river along with irrigation department to identify any blockages. A joint survey was conducted on June 10, covering the entire 17km stretch of the river. "Certain impediments to smooth flow were identified, and directives were issued on June 12 to remove them immediately. The action has since been carried out," Banerjee said. Regarding the pending hydraulic modelling study of the river by Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), the corporation confirmed that all requisite data was submitted by the irrigation department on May 15. The CWPRS acknowledged receipt on May 27 and started developing the mathematical model. "The CWPRS has requested that NMC and irrigation officials visit its Pune office during the modelling process for discussions. Officials will visit CWPRS as and when requested," Banerjee stated. # Nag River Cleanup And Monitoring Progress: Status of Encroachments: No fresh or re-emerging encroachments found along the river. 155 earlier structures cleared across Zones 1 to 10 River Cleaning: 16.17km out of 16.58km under NMC jurisdiction cleaned.
