Bassist Carol Kaye tells AP she's declining Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, 'Permanently'
NEW YORK (AP) — Carol Kaye, a prolific and revered bassist who played on thousands of songs in the 1960s including hits by the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel and Barbra Streisand, told The Associated Press on Friday that she wants no part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. 'I've declined the rrhof. Permanently," the 90-year-old Kaye said in an email to the AP. She said she has sent a letter to the Hall saying the same thing. Her remarks come two days after a Facebook post — since deleted — in which she said 'NO I won't be there. I am declining the RRHOF awards show.' Kaye was set to be inducted in November in a class that also includes Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker and Cyndi Lauper. She said in her deleted post that she was 'turning it down because it wasn't something that reflects the work that Studio Musicians do and did in the golden era of the 1960s Recording Hits.' Kaye's credits include the bass lines on Simon & Garfunkel's 'Homeward Bound,' the Beach Boys' 'Good Vibrations' and the Monkees' 'I'm a Believer." Along with drummer Hal Blaine and guitarist Tommy Tedesco, she was part of a core of heavily used studio musicians that Blaine later dubbed 'The Wrecking Crew.' 'I was never a 'wrecker' at all,' she wrote, "that's a terrible insulting name.' Kaye's inductee page on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame website makes no mention of the moniker. Hall representatives had no immediate comment. Many artists have been inducted in their absence or after their death, and in 2006 the Sex Pistols became Hall of Famers despite rejecting their induction. In 2022, Dolly Parton initially declined her induction, saying someone more associated with rock 'n' roll should get the honor. Watch the 'AGT' Golden Buzzer Dance Crew 45 Years in the Making originally appeared on Parade. There's never been a question that America's Got Talent's Terry Crews is Michigan proud. The Flint-born and raised host has previously shown his support for an act from Detroit when he twice named the Detroit Youth Choir his Golden Buzzer, frst for Season 14 and then for America's Got Talent: The Champions. So, it wasn't a big surprise that he continued the tradition by awarding the Detroit-based Funkateers his Golden Buzzer for Season 20. The Funkateers are a four-man dance crew who first performed in 1980 at their high school talent show, which they won. But the last time they all performed together was in 1989 at one of their weddings. 🎬 🎬 Initially, they performed at a lot of theaters, outside summer concerts and the like. But as they got older, they became fathers, so they had to put dancing on hold while they took day jobs in sales, financial services, maintenance and contracting. 'We've always believed that we were before our time,' they told judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara. 'That's why we came up with this idea. Let's give America's Got Talent a shot.' The judges had no clue what they were going to do. So when they got their groove on to Rick James' 'Give It To Me Baby,' there were smiling faces all around. Instead of returning to the stage, Terry headed down into the audience, while Simon said, 'Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.' Related: 'I love it when we start the day with an act that is perfect,' Sofia told them. 'You guys are what AGT is all about. You guys are great, you have a beautiful story, and you actually did what you were supposed to do. I loved it.' Then Howie added, 'As good as they were, and they were probably this good in high school, it's better that you did it now at this age. It makes it even better.' Terry was still making his way to the judges' table, and he popped up just as Simon was about to start talking. 'Listen, you are my Golden Buzzer. I got you!' Terry said. 'That was supposed to be mine,' Simon responded. Terry replied, 'These are my people.' 'I was going to do it,' Simon insisted. Related: Mel B, who earlier this season stole a Golden Buzzer from Sofia, told Simon, 'You snooze, you lose.' After the excitement and the confetti calmed down, Simon said, 'People sometimes say, 'What is the perfect audition.' It's something surprising and it just makes you feel amazing. I am not making this up. I was literally about to do that [press the Golden Buzzer] and out of the corner of my eye I saw [Terry] and I hated you and I loved you at the same time.' In an interview with Rolling Stone published on Wednesday, June 18, the "You're So Vain" hitmaker came to the pop star's defense amid the backlash surrounding the cover for her forthcoming album Man's Best Friend. The album artwork features a photo of Carpenter, 26, on her hands and knees as someone who appears to be a man grabs her by the hair. In the image, she's donning a short, black dress and black heels. Simon herself released a similarly controversial cover with her 1975 album Playing Possum, which featured the "You Belong to Me" artist on her knees wearing black lingerie and black leather boots. "Everybody looked at it, and people definitely had a reaction to it,' Simon, 81, told the publication of the controversial album cover. 'But they wouldn't have told me what they really thought.' When the album was shipped to stores, she was met with bolder reactions. 'Suddenly, I'm getting calls from Time and Newsweek, saying, 'This is one of the sexiest covers that has ever known,'' Norman Seeff, the photographer who shot the cover for Playing Possum, told Rolling Stone. He continued: 'There's this whole controversy around what did it represent? It felt very much like that energy in a woman, but I just thought of it as a beautiful shot. None of that stuff they were talking about was the intention." Simon also addressed the criticism Carpenter has faced for her Man's Best Friend album artwork, which she didn't understand. "She's not doing anything outrageous,' she told the outlet. 'It seems tame." Added Simon: "There have been far flashier covers than hers. One of the most startling covers I've ever seen was [The Rolling Stones'] Sticky Fingers. That was out there in terms of sexual attitude. So I don't know why she's getting such flak." Carpenter announced the release of her seventh studio album and its cover art on Wednesday, June 11. The news came after she shared the album's lead single "Manchild" earlier this month. In the days after she shared the album cover, Carpenter responded to an X user who reshared the singer's Man's Best Friend album cover, saying, 'Does she have a personality outside of sex?'
