
AB Majlis podcast: Hala Taxi app holds 37% of Dubai's e-hailing market despite new competition
Ride-hailing service Hala, a joint venture between Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Careem, now commands 37 per cent of Dubai's e-hailing market as it expands its green vehicle fleet amid rising competition, its CEO said.
In an interview on the Arabian Business podcast AB Majlis, Hala CEO Khaled Nuseibeh revealed the company grew its customer base by 21 per cent year-on-year while increasing trips by 17 per cent, despite new market entrants like Yango and Bolt.
'Competition is always healthy for every industry. It forces players to compete. It forces players to come up with different ways to raise the bar and innovate,' Nuseibeh told the podcast.
Launched in 2019, Hala was created to digitise Dubai's taxi service, transforming how residents and tourists book and use taxis in the emirate. Prior to Hala, customers had to either hail taxis on the street or call a booking service.
The company has also improved its reliability by 11 percentage points while experiencing growth, a metric Nuseibeh highlighted as crucial to the service's success.
'It's beautiful when you're growing, and your customers are happy, and you're also improving on your reliability,' he said. 'Reliability… means people can depend on us. It means they can use us, and it means they can continuously count on Hala for their journeys.'
Nuseibeh, who previously worked at Careem before and during its acquisition by Uber, attributed Hala's continued success to its deep understanding of the local market and close partnership with the RTA.
'We have a very deep understanding of the city. We've been in Dubai for a long time. We really understand our customer base, our captains, and we understand what it takes to actually solve for reliability and convenience,' he said.
The company has recently diversified its offerings by introducing electric vehicles in high-demand areas like Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah at no additional cost to customers. Nuseibeh said the initiative has saved nearly 97 million grams of CO2 emissions since launch, equivalent to a car driving approximately 293,000 kilometres.
'We've seen that customers are quite generally happy,' Nuseibeh said regarding the EV rollout. 'As this technology matures, as you see more and more cars come into play, you will see more of these vehicles shift into becoming green vehicles.'
He added that Hala will support the RTA's pledge to make 100 per cent of its vehicles eco-friendly by 2027.
The company has also introduced new technologies to enhance customer experience, including WhatsApp booking capabilities aimed primarily at tourists who may not have the Careem app installed.
'We saw tourists actually want an easier way to book if they don't have the Careem map, which is like a stepping stone, you can just book a Hala immediately from your WhatsApp service,' he explained.
When asked about potential future developments like flying or autonomous taxis, Nuseibeh said Hala would 'follow the lead of the RTA in any new technology that is regulated.'
'The most important thing for us is in adopting any new technology. We would always make sure that this technology has to be safe and efficient and caters to customer needs,' he added, suggesting autonomous vehicles would eventually work alongside human drivers during a transition period.
Regarding brand recognition, Nuseibeh highlighted how 'Hala' has become synonymous with taxi booking in Dubai's vernacular, with residents commonly saying they will 'book a Hala' rather than a taxi.
'It seems we've done our work correctly. We've managed to really create that engagement with our customers,' he said.
The company recently launched a marketing campaign called 'Real Icons of Dubai' celebrating the everyday users of the service, including working families, busy professionals, and tourists.

UAE Property: ‘I'm worried the seller is unduly delaying my house purchase'
Question: I signed a memorandum of understanding on March 4 for the purchase of a property at Gate Tower, Abu Dhabi. The original agreement was valid for 60 days. However, due to delays in the bank loan process, the seller decided to withdraw from the sale. About a week later, the seller reconsidered and agreed to proceed with the sale. We did not sign a new memorandum of understanding, as advised by the agent handling the transaction. Now, as we are already into the third week of June, certain pending actions remain from the seller and the agent holding the power of attorney. Could you advise what steps I can take to help move the process forward, as the delay is becoming longer than anticipated? My blank cheque as security deposit of 10 per cent of the property price is with the agent. AA, Abu Dhabi Answer: The first thing to point out is that not signing a new written agreement was a bad move because now you are reliant on a verbal agreement, where the parties don't have any legal redress should they fail to fulfil the wishes of all. These delays would worry me because the tide has turned from your side being the one that had issues leading to delays, but now the delay is with the seller. If all parties are in agreement and even at this late stage, I would still urge you to firstly sign an addendum to the expired memorandum of understanding clearly stating the obligations of all parties in order to finalise this sale, after which all parties can work to finish this transaction, assuming all still wish to do so. This is where my concerns are. It's possible that the seller may use this delay to look for another buyer or indeed has one already but just has not informed you yet. I know this is pure speculation, but my experience has shown me that when the seller delays, especially in a rising market, it's because he wants a better deal. I suggest you bring all parties together to agree once and for all if this deal is going ahead because with an expired memorandum of understanding in hand, nobody has any rights. Q: I have a question regarding an office rental situation. If I provide a tenant with a 12-month eviction notice due to the sale of the property, and after the tenant vacates, I later invite them to return but they decline, would I be legally allowed to rent the office to someone else? I recently purchased an office property and understand that the previous owner issued a 12-month eviction notice to the tenant due to the sale of the property. I assume that this eviction notice remains valid under my ownership, just as the lease contract would. Could you confirm if this is correct? Additionally, as the new owner, once the tenant vacates the property, am I permitted to lease it to a new tenant immediately? JL, Dubai A: The outgoing tenant always has the first right of refusal after a forced eviction, so if you re-offer the unit to the outgoing tenant and they are not interested to return, you would need to have this in writing, preferably notarised, after which you can re-let the property again. The reason of the notarised notice is because a landlord technically cannot evict one tenant to then just re-let it out to another. That's why the outgoing tenant has the right of refusal and if they do not exercise that right, you can move forward and re-let the property immediately. Your second point is correct, as long as the eviction notice was sent by notary public and/or registered mail and was for the statutory 12 months' notice, you can use this for your own gain, even if it was sent by the previous owner. This has now been made possible by judges at the Rental Dispute Settlement Committee agreeing that the notice served is transferable when previously it wasn't. Before this law change, you would have had to serve another 12 months' eviction notice to the tenant yourself.

'Similarly, the Algarve region in Portugal stands out for its sunny beaches and family-oriented resorts. Where they are going Mohamed Ahmed Ismail, an Egyptian doctor living in Dubai for the past 13 years, is planning a summer holiday to Switzerland with his wife and two children. Their stay will last a minimum of 10 days, with an expected budget of Dh25,000 to Dh30,000. "When travelling, in addition to considering safety, we tend to choose destinations and hotels that offer a family-friendly environment and take into account our cultural and religious needs as a Muslim family — such as prayer times, non-alcoholic beverages, halal food, and cultural sensitivity during tours and vacations," he told Khaleej Times. Ahmed and Kholoud Shamasneh, a Jordanian couple born and raised in the UAE and currently residing in Dubai, are set to travel to Malta this summer with their young child. Their vacation is confirmed and currently in the planning phase, with a stay of between one week and ten days and a budget of around Dh36,000. 'We're a small family, so we usually look for quiet, peaceful destinations with hotels that offer family-friendly facilities — such as kids' play areas, spacious rooms, and easy access to nature or relaxing settings. We are not really city people and therefore, prefer more serene and laid-back environments. 'We are also looking to see historical places that have a wide mix culture to communicate with locals. Having religious considerations is also an important aspect when planning a trip, because it gives the feel of convenience and ease, without having to worry about any relevant needs or requirements during travel.' How are international destinations responding? Khaleej Times reached out to a couple of industry experts to learn how they accommodate UAE-based Muslim families. Mauritius Ramesh Jeenarain, director of sales & marketing, Sunlife Resorts in Mauritius, said, 'We have beachfront resorts that go the extra mile to cater to Muslim travellers, many of whom typically stay between 3 to 5 nights and seek a culturally considerate experience for the whole family. From prayer mats and Qibla direction to halal-friendly dining options and the availability of shisha lounges, every detail is thoughtfully curated to ensure comfort. 'Resorts provide guests with prayer mats and Qibla direction markers in their rooms. Our team is always available to provide daily prayer times.. Guests have access to mosques within a 5 to 20-minute drive. Rooms include Muslim showers (bidet sprays) and we offer private spa treatments for female guests with female therapists, in-room dining, and exclusive-use spaces for family gatherings.' Switzerland Tamara Löffel-Jäger, head of business development at VisitGraubunden, shared: 'Muslim travellers from UAE often prioritise family-sized suites, halal dining options, and culturally respectful service. Most upscale properties provide prayer mats, Qibla direction, and daily prayer times in-room and private prayer spaces can be arranged upon request. " "Amenities include private wellness areas, women-only spa times, female therapists, Muslim showers on request, halal menus, alcohol-free minibars, and family-oriented layouts with ample privacy," she added. Malta Kyle Pace Cumbo, group director of sales & marketing at Iniala Harbour House, noted: 'Guests typically book suites or private residences for secluded family time. Their average stay is 6 nights, and they spend generously on exclusive experiences, private dining, and wellness. 'Our concierge team assists with prayer times and directions to the closest mosque. Prayer mats and Qibla markers are available in-room. We offer halal-certified private dining options and can accommodate dietary requirements at our Michelin-starred restaurant.'
