Malaysian Bar renews call for refugee rights

The Sun3 hours ago

PETALING JAYA: On this year's World Refugee Day, the Malaysian Bar has reaffirmed its commitment to standing in solidarity with refugees in Malaysia and around the world.
Observed annually on June 20, World Refugee Day 2025 carries the theme Solidarity with Refugees, underscoring the urgent need for compassion, protection and meaningful legal reform for displaced communities.
'Globally, over 100 million people have been forcibly displaced due to war, persecution, violence and human rights violations,' said Malaysian Bar president Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab.
He said Malaysia hosts a significant refugee and asylum-seeker population, many of whom live without legal recognition or access to basic rights such as education, healthcare and employment.
'Despite facing immense challenges, refugee communities in Malaysia continue to demonstrate resilience and strength.
'Many contribute to local society
through informal education programmes, community initiatives, skills development and humanitarian outreach – efforts that reflect the spirit of this year's theme,' he said in a statement.
However, legal and systemic barriers remain.
Refugees in Malaysia are not formally recognised under domestic law, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation, arbitrary arrest and detention.
In light of these challenges,
Mohamad Ezri called for urgent and meaningful reforms to uphold the rights and dignity of refugees and asylum-seekers.
'Firstly, the Malaysian Bar urges the enactment of a clear legal and policy framework that recognises the rights of refugees and asylum-seekers in accordance with international standards.
'Secondly, we call on the Malaysian government to accede to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol.'
He also stressed the importance of ensuring access to essential services, including legal protection, healthcare, education and lawful employment for all refugees and asylum-seekers.
In addition, the Malaysian Bar advocates community engagement and partnerships that support integration and uphold the dignity of displaced persons.
'As officers of the court and advocates for justice, the Malaysian Bar remains steadfast in its commitment to defending the rights of marginalised and vulnerable communities.
'True solidarity with refugees goes beyond compassion. It demands the pursuit of meaningful, rights-based solutions that ensure protection, dignity and inclusion.
'On this World Refugee Day, let us reaffirm our shared humanity and strive to build a society in which no one is left behind, regardless of their status or origin,' he said.

Amanah pushes special Dewan Rakyat sitting on Middle-East conflict

ALOR STAR: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to convene a special Parliament sitting to address Malaysia's official position on the escalating conflict in the Middle East. This came following large-scale military action launched by Israel and the United States of America against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Amanah vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said the situation posed a grave threat to regional stability and could have far-reaching implications for global security, including Southeast Asia. "This military aggression has not only caused loss of lives and destruction of public infrastructure in Iran, but it has also opened the door to wider regional conflict that risks undermining global stability," he said in a statement today. Mahfuz said Malaysia must urgently deliberate on appropriate diplomatic measures and assess the geopolitical and economic impact, including supply chain disruptions, fluctuating oil prices, and regional security risks. "As the highest democratic institution in the country, Parliament cannot remain silent on matters involving universal justice, the sovereignty of other nations, and humanity. "The voice of the Malaysian people must be expressed through a legitimate and respectable channel which is the Dewan Rakyat," he said. Mahfuz stressed that as a neutral and principled nation, Malaysia must maintain its consistent stand of rejecting all forms of colonisation, invasion and violations of international law. "It is also our responsibility to continue Malaysia's active role in promoting global peace through our engagements within the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Asean," he said. Mahfuz added that Malaysians overwhelmingly reject violence and support peaceful solutions, and that it was the government's moral and political obligation to ensure the country's voice is heard clearly and with dignity on the world stage. "I call on the Prime Minister to immediately consider convening this special Parliament sitting in the interest of upholding justice and humanity," he said. Earlier today, the US announced its entry into the Iran-Israel War, stating that it has carried out attacks on three Iranian nuclear sites. Entering its second week, Israel began the conflict through 'preemptive' airstrikes on several strategic sites in Iran, including nuclear facilities, missile bases and military command centres, followed with retaliation by the Gulf state.

Malaysians evacuated from Iran land tonight at KLIA

PETALING JAYA: A group of Malaysian nationals evacuated from Iran is scheduled to land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) this evening on Malaysia Airlines flight MH781 at 10.50pm. The evacuees began their journey earlier today on Turkmenistan Airlines flight T5-647, traveling through Bangkok, Thailand, before their final destination in Malaysia. The evacuation operation was orchestrated by Malaysia's Embassy in Tehran, working in collaboration with Malaysian diplomatic missions in both Ashgabat and Bangkok to ensure safe passage for the citizens. Earlier this week on June 19 (Thursday), the Foreign Ministry outlined the evacuation route, which required overland travel from northeastern Tehran toward the border with Turkmenistan, followed by transit through Ashgabat, the Turkmen capital. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan announced yesterday the temporary suspension of operations at Malaysia's embassy in Iran, with all diplomatic personnel ordered to return home without delay. Mohamad noted that numerous other nations have implemented similar measures, closing their diplomatic missions in response to escalating tensions in the Middle East related to the Israel-Iran conflict. The evacuation comes as the United States declared its involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict today, announcing military strikes against three Iranian nuclear installations, including the Fordow underground uranium enrichment complex. The conflict, now in its second week, was initiated by Israel through what it termed 'preemptive' air attacks targeting Iranian nuclear sites, missile installations, and military headquarters. Iran has since responded with retaliatory actions against Israel.
