Jaws turns 50: How Spielberg's shark thriller continues to terrify generations

Half a century since its release, Jaws remains one of the most iconic and terrifying films ever made. Steven Spielberg's 1975 thriller, which hit the 50-year mark on June 20, didn't just change how we watch movies. It changed how we think about the sea. The fear it instilled was so real that some viewers couldn't step into a pool, let alone an ocean, for years. And many still flinch at the idea of what lurks below. Jaws turns 50( This summer, the shark is back. All four Jaws films will stream on Peacock from June 15. NBC will air the original on June 20, with a special introduction by Spielberg. A theatrical re-release is also planned for August 29. For Spielberg, the film became both a breakthrough and a burden. At just 27, he faced constant setbacks on set-especially with the faulty mechanical shark known as Bruce. In the upcoming documentary Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story (July 11, Hulu/Disney+), Spielberg admits: 'There was nothing fun about making 'Jaws,'' per USA Today. Also read: Jab Steven Spielberg met Kareena Kapoor: 'Are you the girl in famous Indian film about three students?' Martha's Vineyard and lasting fear Experts say the film's impact remains because it taps into something primal. 'Sharks stand in perfectly for wild nature that's at the edge of where humans can go,' horror scholar Dawn Keetley told the outlet. The movie was shot with locals from Martha's Vineyard, many of whom still share stories. And even now, beachgoers around the world hesitate when stepping into the ocean - just in case something is waiting below the surface. One of the often-overlooked elements that gave Jaws its authentic feel was the number of Martha's Vineyard locals who appeared in the film. While the cast included Hollywood names like Roy Scheider, who played police chief Martin Brody, and Richard Dreyfuss as shark expert Matt Hooper, the majority of the supporting roles were filled by islanders. Their natural presence added a layer of realism that couldn't have been achieved with a full cast of seasoned actors on a studio set. Many of them continue to participate in 'Jaws' fan events.

The Handmaid's Tale: Why Did Alexis Bledel Pull Out of Emmy Awards 2025 Run?

The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 brought on the finale of the highly loved series. Bringing back one of the most fan-favourite characters, Dr. Emily Malek/Ofglen, Alexis Bledel managed to shock viewers with her appearance, which became one of the most talked-about cameos of the year. She managed to give a very notable end to her character, adding value to the Hulu series, much to the delight of those watching. Despite previously applying for an Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series nomination, she has now withdrawn it. The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 has a change of nominations Alexis Bledel will not be a part of the 2025 Emmy Awards race for the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. A new set of rules has been released for the upcoming anticipated awards night, which prohibits anyone nominated in a lead or supporting category for the same show from winning this particular award. According to a Variety report, Alexis Bledel was notified by the Television Academy that she would not be in the running for the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series award. She'll instead be moved to the supporting actress race. The Handmaid's Tale season 6 will not be adding Alexis Bledel's name to their nominations, and she will exit the race, choosing to stay away from the ballot, which is set for June 12. Previously, a similar situation broke down when, in 2018, the actress was not allowed to enter the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series competition after appearing in seven of the thirteen episodes. She is now eligible for a win in the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series award, just as she was 7 years ago. Other actors affected include Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd for their appearances in Only Murders in the Building. Meanwhile, The Handmaid's Tale is all set to have around 35 nominations at this year's Emmy Awards, across Primetime Emmy Awards and The Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The show has so far managed to take home 15 trophies, proving a historical run for a streamer.

Chad Powers Teaser: Glen Powell Is All Set To Make A Comeback In College Football

Last Updated: In Chad Powers, Glen Powell plays Russ Holliday, a former college quarterback whose negligent behaviour results in the end of his athletic career. Glen Powell is set to bring his American charm to the upcoming Hulu original series Chad Powers. The sports comedy, inspired by a 2022 ESPN+ sketch from Eli Manning's docuseries Eli's Places, features the Top Gun: Maverick star as a fictional football player with a secret identity. Created by Glen Powell and Michael Waldron, the show, set in the world of Southern College football, has football fans and Internet buzzing mostly for its titular character – Chad Powers but why? Here we explain. The upcoming sports comedy has Powell playing Russ Holliday, a former college quarterback whose negligent behaviour results in the end of his athletic career. Determined to make a comeback, he goes undercover as Chad Powers and joins a struggling southern football team to revive his career. Powell's transformation for the role includes a wig, prosthetic nose and moustache, making him look totally 'unrecognisable' in the teaser dropped recently. Releasing September 20 on Hulu. — DiscussingFilm (@DiscussingFilm) June 14, 2025 Chad Powers is not just a fiction. The character first originated in 2022 when NFL legend Eli Manning went undercover to experience walk-on tryouts at Penn State for his docuseries. He developed a persona as a substitute teacher and carpenter, completed by prosthetics which he gets from a professional makeup artist. The reason – Manning wanted to explore the history of college football through the eyes of real players and coaches. Earlier in a chat with Variety, Manning shared, 'The love for Chad Powers has surprised me in spectacular ways." He added, 'I played 16 years in the NFL, but now when I'm in a restaurant or walking through an airport, it's not uncommon for fans to scream, 'Hey Chad!' I'm so excited to team up with my friends Glen Powell, Michael Waldron and Omaha Productions to continue to tell the Chad Powers story and see what he does next." Chad Powers will premiere on Hulu on September 30. The first two episodes will be released immediately, followed by weekly releases every Tuesday. The show went on floors last year in August and is produced by 20thTelevision, Anomaly Pictures, ESPN and Omaha Productions. Tony Yacenda is the director of the much-awaited project. Besides Glen Powell, the cast also includes Steve Zahn, Perry Mattfeld, Toby Huss, Wynn Everett and Frankie A Rodriguez in key roles. First Published: June 17, 2025, 13:32 IST
