Will move Supreme Court to get Rs 2K crore Samagra Shiksha fund from union govt: CM Stalin
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the state will move the Supreme Court against the centre for withholding funds of Rs 2,152 crore meant for Tamil Nadu for the year 2024-25 under the Samagra Shiksha scheme.
He expressed hope for a favourable verdict, similar to the one secured last month in Tamil Nadu's case against the governor. He also vowed to intensify the fight to restore education to the State List in the Constitution.
Speaking at the launch of the book 'National Education Policy–2020: The Rogue Elephant' (Matha Yaanai), authored by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, at the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai on Saturday, the CM accused the union government of withholding educational funds for 'petty political' reasons.
The parliamentary committee on education, chaired by Congress leader and MP Digvijaya Singh, who also took part in the event, had objected to the withholding of funds and recommended the union government to release them immediately, the CM, who released the book, pointed out.
The union government had said that the funds will be released only if the Tamil Nadu government signs a Memorandum of Understanding to implement another centrally-sponsored PM SHRI scheme to develop model schools, which mandated the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP), including the three-language formula. TN has refused to sign, stating that it would not be implementing the NEP, especially the three-language formula.

YSRCP slams govt for politicizing tragic accident
Vijayawada: The YSRCP has strongly condemned the TDP coalition's attempt to politicize the tragic accident that resulted in the death of party activist Cheeli Singaiah during YS Jagan Mohan Reddy 's recent visit. Former minister Ambati Rambabu said that it was unfortunate to portray the accident as a big conspiracy, instead of treating the matter with the sensitivity it deserves. "The ruling coalition is attempting to exploit it for political gain," Ambati alleged. The YSRCP leader pointed out that Prathipadu YSRCP in-charge Kiran Kumar immediately rushed to the hospital upon receiving news of the accident and remained with the bereaved family until the postmortem was completed, offering them full support. Ambati criticized the Naidu-led govt for failing to provide adequate security to YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, a Z+ security protectee. "A rope party and road clearance team must lead the convoy, but the government has deliberately compromised on Jagan's security," Ambati alleged. This is not an isolated instance, as similar security failures were observed during YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's tours in Rapthadu and Podili. The coalition govt is using these lapses to orchestrate a character assassination campaign against the former CM, he claimed. The YSRCP demands a transparent and impartial investigation into both the accident and the security lapses that continue to put the life of a Z+ protectee at risk. "We urge the state govt to immediately rectify these lapses and stop using such incidents to settle political scores," Ambati said. The party reiterates that human tragedy must never be used as a political weapon.

BJP activates Dalit outreach strategy for 2027 UP polls
With an eye on regaining ground among Dalit voters, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched an intensive outreach campaign across Uttar Pradesh targeting the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. The move is part of the party's broader strategy to consolidate its support base ahead of the 2026 panchayat elections and the 2027 state assembly contest. State general secretary (organisation) of the party is reaching out to the party's SC leaders and community members across the state (Sourced) State general secretary (organisation) Dharampal Singh is spearheading the party's outreach strategy, engaging directly with Dalit leaders, office-bearers and workers through a series of district-level dialogues titled 'Anusoochit Jaati Samvad' (Dialogue with SC community). Since May, Singh has travelled to over 10 districts, including Ayodhya, Bulandshahr, Unnao, Chitrakoot, Lalitpur, Jhansi, Agra, Azamgarh, Gorakhpur and Kushinagar, holding meetings that are being positioned as more than routine political events. 'All party leaders of the SC cell, office-bearers and grassroots workers are attending these sessions. They are briefed about various schemes and steps taken by the BJP government for the uplift of the Scheduled Caste community,' a senior BJP leader said. Participants are also being trained to mobilise support at the local level and inform community members about government initiatives, he added. The Samajwadi Party and Congress have come under frequent criticism during these meetings. At a gathering in Unnao on May 15, Singh urged participants to recall how Congress had 'conspired to defeat Babasaheb Ambedkar' in parliamentary elections. Dr B R Ambedkar had lost both his Lok Sabha elections, first in 1952 from Bombay North-Central, and again in a 1954 bypoll from Bhandara in Vidarbha. 'Highlight the difference in approach between the BJP and the opposition. While the BJP promotes respect and welfare of Scheduled Castes, the opposition lacks a development agenda and only spreads misinformation,' Singh has said at multiple events. The Scheduled Caste population forms around 21% of Uttar Pradesh's electorate, with Jatavs (11.7%), Pasis (3.3%), Valmiks (3.15 %), Gonds, Dhanuks, Khatiks (1.2%) and others (1.6%). Notably, of U.P's 80 Lok Sabha seats, 17 are reserved for Scheduled Castes. In the 2024 general elections, the BJP's performance saw a decline, winning 33 seats compared to 62 in 2019. Party insiders attribute the fall in numbers to the shift of SC and OBC voters towards the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) alliance led by the Samajwadi Party, which secured 37 seats. Congress won seven seats, while BJP allies Rashtriya Lok Dal and Apna Dal (Soneylal) won two and one seat, respectively. Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) also clinched one seat.
