LONG BEACH, California, May 5 (Reuters) - Swiss skipper Eric Monnin clinched his first Congressional Cup on Sunday, beating champion Chris Poole of the United States 3–2 in a tense final at the 60th staging of the regatta known as the 'granddaddy' of match sailing.
Monnin finally got his hands on the silverware — and the crimson blazer that comes with it — at his 11th attempt. The win wasn't just sweet for Monnin, it was a spoiler too, as he stopped Poole from sailing into the history books.
Poole, fresh off a clean sweep against Aussie Cole Tapper in the semis, had been aiming to become only the second skipper to win three successive regatta victories, after American ace Taylor Canfield's feat from 2014 to 2016.
"Chris put a lot of pressure on us, and we were close to cracking under it," 49-year-old Monnin said. "But winning this regatta is a big step for us. It's a big deal, and it means a lot to do it with this crew," he said of the team, which included his wife Ute and brother Jean-Claude.
The closely fought final saw the lead change hands multiple times, with Poole drawing first blood before Monnin responded with back-to-back victories. The American levelled in race four, setting up a decisive winner-takes-all encounter.
The climactic race delivered drama as Monnin suffered an early penalty off the start line but kept in contention in the light, fickle breeze. Fortune swung his way at the first windward mark when Poole clipped the buoy, earning a penalty that cancelled out Monnin's earlier infringement.
With the slate wiped clean, a game of inches ensued. Monnin nursed a slender lead down the final run before the boats split gybes at the bottom of the course. Despite Poole catching a late puff to narrow the gap, the Swiss held firm to secure victory.
Australia's Tapper completed the podium, claiming third place after defeating American Dave Hood in another series that went the distance. The result marked remarkable progress for Tapper's Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) Youth Sailing Academy team, which finished eighth in their Congressional Cup debut last year.
The Congressional Cup has been a fixture of the World Match Racing Tour since 1965, and is a high-stakes duel in Long Beach where six- or seven-person teams race identical Catalina 37s, all under a strict 525kg crew weight limit.
Podium: 1-Eric Monnin / Capvis Swiss Match Racing (Switzerland) crew: Ute Monnin Wagner, Mathieu Renault, Jean-Claude Monnin, Simon Brügger, Julien Falxa, Maxime Mesnil 2-Chris Poole / Riptide Racing (U.S.) crew: Joachim Aschenbrenner, Ben Lamb, Mal Parker, Rob Scivenor, and Harry West 3-Cole Tapper / CYCA (Australia) crew: Jack Frewin, Max Brennan, Hamish Vass, Nathan Gulliksen, and George Richardson

Tommy Fleetwood denied first PGA Tour win on last hole at Travelers Championship

Tommy Fleetwood suffered a heart-breaking one-shot defeat at the final hole of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut as American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley denied the Englishman a maiden PGA Tour victory. Fleetwood had been defending a three-shot lead following his flawless 63 on Saturday, sitting at 16 under par ahead of Bradley and Russell Henley. However, a couple of early bogeys threatened to derail his bid to end his record of the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without claiming a title. "I'm upset now. I'm angry … it hurts." — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 22, 2025 The 34-year-old, though, steadied himself around the turn to edge back ahead of Bradley with birdies at the 11th and 13th. Having found a path on the right of the 15th before going on to save par, Fleetwood looked to be on course once again – only to drop another shot at the 16th. Fleetwood then came up short of the green with his second shot on the 18th. Spurred on by a partisan home crowd, Bradley promptly sent his follow-up to within a few feet. Fleetwood's birdie attempt fell short just behind Bradley's marker, with the Englishman then missing his par putt, having to settle for a bogey and a two-over final round. 'I feel like from where I was, I should at least be in a play-off,' Fleetwood said. 'I didn't really feel like I hit that many bad shots execution-wise, just sort of a couple of bad decisions and didn't clean 'em up, which is pretty poor and things that I have to work on.' Fleetwood added: 'I haven't been in this situation for a while. When it sort of calms down – I am upset now, I am angry – but when it calms down, I will look at the things that I did well and look at the things that I can learn from. 'I did plenty of things well enough this week to win, but I didn't do that and it hurts.' 273-yard 5-iron around a tree 👀 Special shot from Rory McIlroy. 📺 CBS — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 22, 2025 Henley chipped in from the edge of the green on the 18th to secure a tie for second with Fleetwood at 14 under. Harris English and Australian Jason Day finished at 13 under in a tie for fourth. World number one Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Rory McIlroy both shot five-under-par final rounds to get to 12 under and finish in a share of sixth place. Newly-crowned US Open champion JJ Spaun had the best round of the day, starting off at the 10th, as he carded a seven-under 63 to climb up into the top 15. Viktor Hovland had earlier withdrawn on the third hole of his final round because of a neck injury.

Tommy Fleetwood makes disappointing start at Travelers Championship

The Englishman had opened up a three-shot lead following a flawless 63 on Saturday, sitting at 16-under par. Fleetwood, though, found the going tough when heading back out at TPC River Highlands looking to stay clear of the chasing pack – which included American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Russell Henley. Tommy Fleetwood had a a stuttering start (Jessica Hill/AP) After starting with five before swiftly getting that shot back with a birdie, successive bogeys followed to see Fleetwood's advantage eaten away as Bradley had also made a three at the par-four second. Fleetwood, though, then got himself back clear at the top of the leaderboard after making a par five on the sixth, after which Bradley knocked in for a bogey to drop back to 13 under alongside Henley. The 34-year-old would be a popular winner, with Fleetwood having the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without claiming a title. Keegan drops a shot on the par-5 sixth. Fleetwood is once again our solo leader. — TravelersChamp (@TravelersChamp) June 22, 2025 World number one Scottie Scheffler looked to put his nightmare start to the fourth round behind him by soon climbing back up the leaderboard. Scheffler, who had been the overnight leader, made a triple bogey seven at the first hole on Saturday, when he was strangely out of sorts for most of the round, eventually finishing nine shots adrift of Fleetwood. The American, though, was soon back on the charge, this time making a solid birdie on the first and then picking up another with a two at the par-three eighth to head into the turn at two-under. Scottie Scheffler is looking to make up ground (Jessica Hill/AP) Masters champion Rory McIlroy had started the final day tied for eighth, in a group which included Scheffler. The Northern Irishman picked up two birdies in the opening six holes, having dropped a shot at the par-four fourth. Australian Jason Day moved to within two shots back of the co-leaders following five straight pars after his birdie on the first. Viktor Hovland, meanwhile, withdrew during his final round, on the third hole, because of a neck injury, the PGA Tour confirmed.
