New government arts and science college in Perambalur to admit 280 students

The new arts and science college at Kolakanatham in Perambalur district, inaugurated virtually by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday, will function temporarily on the Government Higher Secondary School premises in the village.
The co-educational college will offer undergraduate courses in commerce, economics, computer science, biotechnology, and political science with a total intake of 280 students. Eleven posts, including that of the principal and five other faculty members, have been created initially for the college, said S.S. Sivasankar, Minister for Transport and Power, who was present at the college during the inauguration. So far, 1,820 applications have been received for admissions to the college, he added.
Mr. Sivasankar, who inspected the classrooms and the help desk for admissions, said he had sanctioned ₹1 crore from his MLA's Local Area Development Scheme for the development of the college. The opening of the college in the backward area would help rural students get better access to higher education, he said.
Collector Grace Pachau was present.
The Collector recently inspected a five-acre site identified at Kolakanatham for construction of permanent buildings for the college and instructed the officials to take steps to allot land for the institution.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday announced that under the two new legislations to nominate persons with disabilities to all local bodies in the State, a total of 13,357 members will be appointed to local governance roles. Of them, in the first phase, 650 individuals will be appointed to urban local bodies and 2,984 to rural local bodies, starting from July 1. Speaking at a felicitation function organised by the coordination committee of persons with disabilities to thank him for passing those legislations, Mr. Stalin said applications will be invited district-wise from July 1, and a committee led by the Collector will scrutinise them. A member from the district-level committee of persons with disabilities will also be part of the selection panel, he said. He added that the appointed members could participate in local council meetings and would receive honorariums on a par with elected members. 'I request all representatives of associations working for the welfare of persons with disabilities to continue close collaboration with the government. Let us move towards a truly inclusive society,' he said. 'Today, persons with disabilities are making strides in all sectors and achieving remarkable success by breaking societal barriers. You are proving that people facing challenges due to health conditions, or accidents can overcome them and succeed like anyone else. This is a government for all. That is what some divisive forces and those submissive to them find hard to accept. They cannot tolerate inclusive growth, social justice and equality. These are the very people who attack the DMK government. But the strength to defeat such forces politically comes from the support of the people,' Mr. Stalin said. In his speech, he also recalled at length the contributions of his father and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi towards the welfare of persons with disabilities and his efforts in honouring Thiruvalluvar and promoting the Thirukkural.. This was the first public event held at Valluvar Kottam after its recent renovation and infrastructure upgrade at a cost of ₹80 crore. Ministers, officials, representatives of associations for persons with disabilities and activists including Thangam, Jhansi Rani, Simmachandran, Gopinath, Manoharan, Deepak Nathan and Arman Ali were present.

2,700 teachers recruited to fill vacancies in Tamil Nadu government schools

Nearly 2,700 teachers have been recruited through the Teachers Recruitment Board this year to fill vacancies in government schools across Tamil Nadu. Posting orders will be issued shortly, said B. Chandra Mohan, Principal Secretary to Government, School Education Department, on Saturday. Addressing the media, he also highlighted the State government's continued investment in upgrading school infrastructure. Over the past four years, ₹4,000 crore has been spent under the Professor Anbazhagan School Infrastructure Development Scheme to replace dilapidated school buildings. For the current year, ₹1,000 crore will be allocated for schools in rural areas and ₹130 crore for those in urban areas. He was speaking after inaugurating four new classrooms at the Government Higher Secondary School in Arasampalayam, Coimbatore. The facility was constructed with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support from Sri Krishna Sweets. Mr. Chandra Mohan reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring uninterrupted education for all students. 'The government provides free textbooks, uniforms, footwear, breakfast, and noon meals to remove barriers to learning,' he said. Acknowledging the CSR support, he said private sector participation is crucial in strengthening public education.

Mankani festival begins in Krishnagiri

The 31st All India Mankani festival was inaugurated at Kalaignar Thidal here on Saturday (June 21, 2025). The festival was being ushered in on the shadows of a grim season for mango growers grappling with fallen prices for the king of fruits this summer. Inaugurating the festival, Minister for food and Civil Supplies R. Sakkarapani said the State government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was tuned into the needs of the farmers and the various schemes for farmers welfare was an outcome of informed deliberations. The district has over 1.02 ha of horticultural crops. This includes 40.070 ha of vegetables, 33,550 ha of fruits and 11.363 ha of flowers. Of these, over 32,147 ha of the horticultural area is under mango cultivation in the district. This entails a production of 2.60 mt of mangoes, of which 1.20 lakh mt is given to pulp industry. The Mankani festival will be a month-long affair with over a line-up of stalls by the Horticulture Department along with the various informative stalls on government schemes set up by the Department of Information and Publicity. An exclusive recreational arena has been set up for the public and children as part of the festival. The week has seen political parties expressing solidarity with the mango growers, whilst demanding compensation for the poor prices. Mango farmers, faced with prices as low as ₹3.50 to ₹5 per kg are demanding the government to step in and urged pulp industry to procure mangoes at higher prices. While a section of the farmers also call for support price on the lines of Andhra Pradesh government, where a support price of ₹4 per kg was announced to be given along with ₹8 per kg procured by the pulp industry. In view of the ongoing festival, traffic diversions have been made.
