Samridhi@Kochi diversifies operations with canteen vertical

Four years after its introduction as part of a State government-backed hunger-free project, Samridhi@Kochi, a budget eatery run jointly by the Kochi Corporation and the Ernakulam district mission of the Kudumbashree, is all set to further diversify and establish itself as a brand in running canteens.
The inauguration of its canteen at the Greater Cochin Development Authority office here on Monday was the first step in that direction. Samridhi@Kochi has already been offering catering services, including at fairs and functions organised by the State government.
'The idea is to introduce the canteen model, and going forward, we expect to get more inquiries in this vertical,' said P.A. Ajith, District Programme Manager, Kudumbashree (Micro Enterprises). Kochi, being a commercial hub and home to numerous offices, Kudumbashree remains confident that the brand Samridhi will be able to make quick strides. Having a central kitchen at the Samridhi@Kochi budget hotel near the North railway station also helps.
The introduction of the canteen vertical is expected to add another 20 to 25 jobs to Samridhi's 110-strong current workforce. Women associated with Samridhi get a minimum monthly pay of ₹20,000, which touches the ₹40,000- ₹45,000 range based on various grades and allowances.
Samridhi's diversification is not restricted to the canteen service alone. 'We are in talks with the Railway to sell Samridhi-branded food inside the South and North railway stations and trains, besides putting up kiosks outside these stations. We are also exploring the scope of accepting online-based orders and even door delivery of food,' said Mr. Ajith.
When Samridhi@Kochi started in 2021, it offered meals for ₹10 with the State government offering another ₹10 as a subsidy. Though the government stopped that subsidy in August 2023, meals continue to be effectively sold for ₹20, notwithstanding the surge in the prices of essential items since then. This has been made possible by including more items in the menu at reasonable prices and thus facilitating cross-subsidy.
Samridhi@Kochi sells 2,500 to 3,000 meals a day and is now open around the clock. The basic principle is to offer quality food at reasonable prices while generating jobs with decent income.

Warner Bros Discovery's decision to split its streaming and studio business from its traditional TV networks may give a fresh push to its digital plans in India—but growing in the country's crowded and price-sensitive OTT market won't be easy. Under the restructuring, Global Networks will house entertainment, sports and news television brands such as CNN and Discovery, along with digital products including the discovery+ streaming platform. The newly formed Streaming & Studios entity will comprise Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group and DC Studios, which will continue releasing their films theatrically in India. David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros Discovery, said in a global release, 'By operating as two distinct and optimised companies, we are empowering these brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape." This will also allow each company to pursue important investment opportunities and drive shareholder value," added CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels. India playbook challenges The separation could allow Warner Bros Discovery to invest more aggressively in OTT in India, especially in subscription-based models. However, the challenges are plenty. Currently, the company only runs the discovery+ streaming service in India, while syndicating most of its intellectual property (IP) to JioHotstar. Experts believe that the platform, now free from having to serve traditional TV audiences, could lean into bold, edgy content aimed at younger demographics. 'The digital business isn't big in India, and it will have to show revenue now," said Girish Dwibhashyam, streaming industry expert and former vice-president and chief operating officer of DocuBay, a documentary streaming service. 'The split could rejuvenate their investments in OTT but it would also bring down their negotiating power with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and aggregators for distribution partnerships since it would no longer come under the same umbrella as broadcast," he added. While Warner Bros Discovery has dabbled in infotainment, science, and mythology in India, Dwibhashyam sees room for more daring content experiments. Given that they no longer have the baggage of producing the same programming for both TV and OTT, the company could explore edgier themes, he said. Singh, managing director (USA), Primus Partners, added that the company could now double down on high-quality originals and global formats. 'These are key to capturing Indian millennials and Gen Z in a fiercely competitive OTT landscape," he said. Singh also said HBO-branded content, currently available via video-on-demand through partnerships like JioHotstar, may gain more muscle with renewed global backing. Despite the digital optimism, linear television remains dominant in India, especially in smaller towns and non-English-speaking markets. However, if other global media giants follow Warner Bros Discovery's decoupling strategy, standalone TV units may need to raise ad or subscription rates to remain viable. This could further drive viewers toward cheaper OTT platforms, including those that rely on advertising-based video-on-demand (AVoD). Industry experts anticipate that the decoupling trend could push streaming companies to innovate their pricing models. Expect bundles that include local originals, micropayments, ad insertions, and dynamic pricing to boost reach while protecting average revenue per user (ARPU). Subscription blues Yet, streaming monetization remains a hurdle in India. According to a report by Ormax Media, India's video streaming audience stood at 547.3 million, but active paid subscriptions stagnated at 99.6 million. Notably, the SVoD (subscription video-on-demand) audience declined by 2% in 2024, even as the AVoD base grew by 21%. 'Foreign companies haven't really seen India as a hot market. Plus, there isn't real value in SVoD yet," said Sunil Lulla, founder, The Linus Adventures. Warner Bros Discovery has also refrained from fully adopting the ad-supported model in India. Last year, Sai Abishek, head of factual and lifestyle cluster, South Asia, had said the platform would continue to focus primarily on a subscription-driven model. What's next While Warner Bros Discovery declined to comment on Mint's queries for this story, industry watchers say the company's strategic split could be a reset moment for its India plans. However, competing in a saturated market—dominated by players like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, ZEE5, and SonyLIV—will demand more than just capital. KOCHI: Amid the escalating Iran-Israel conflict, several airlines are cancelling or diverting flights by avoiding airspaces in West Asia, which has severely impacted tourism to Central Asian countries, especially Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Georgia. This has severely affected travel operators in Kerala who have seen a nearly 30% decline in inbound and outbound tourism linked to these countries. Many find themselves trapped between airline operators and travellers, having been forced to reimburse cancelled tours while still awaiting refunds from airlines. Meanwhile, travellers have been advised to prepare themselves for possible delays and unscheduled layovers in the wake of reduced connectivity on key routes and sudden cancellation of flights. 'A group that had travelled to Russia had its scheduled five-day visit extended to eight days, after the scheduled Air Arabia return flight was cancelled. The airline could accommodate them only on the third day,' Anu Sebastian, general manager of Kochi-based Gooout Tour & Travels Pvt Ltd, told TNIE. Budget airlines like Air Arabia Abu Dhabi have cancelled flights through West Asian airspace from June 20 to 30, further compounding travel woes. 'We initially booked seats on an Air Arabia Abu Dhabi flight as part of plans to visit Georgia. However, we received a message that the flight was cancelled. Without informing us, the airline issued a credit voucher for the cost of our tickets, which meant that we could only use that for travel on that airline.

Kochi- and Dubai-based Aster DM Healthcare, founded by Dr Azad Moopen in 1987 with a single clinic in Dubai, expects to complete the takeover of the Blackstone and TPG-backed Quality Care Hospital by the fourth quarter of this fiscal. The takeover will result in the third largest hospital chain Aster Quality Care, after Apollo and Fortis, with 38 hospitals across four brands -- Aster DM, Care Hospitals, KIMS Health and Evercare -- offering over 10,150 beds spread across 27 locations. Aster Quality Care is now jointly controlled by the Moopen family holding 24% and Blackstone owning 30.7%. In an interaction with Benn Kochuveedan of TNIE, Dr Azad Moopen shares his plans and expectations from the largest deal that his group has done. Excerpts: When do you see the merger of Quality Care Hospital getting completed? What are the targets in terms of revenue, profit expansion etc? The merger brings together four leading healthcare brands — Aster DM, Care Hospitals, KIMS Health, and Evercare — forming one of the largest hospital chains with 38 hospitals and over 10,150 beds across 27 cities. Financially, the merger strengthens the balance sheet and cash flow, enabling accelerated expansion plans. We aim to increase bed capacity to around 13,300 beds by FY27, further expanding our reach into tier 2 and 3 cities, providing a platform for sustained growth in the future. The merger is expected to be concluded by Q4FY26, with benefits expected to start flowing in from early FY27. What are the synergies you see from the merger? The merger unlocks significant synergies that will drive growth, operational efficiencies, and enhanced patient care across the combined network. Integrating our extensive hospital portfolios will allow the new entity to benefit from economies of scale by negotiating better terms with suppliers, reducing costs, and streamlining inventory management that will lower operational expenses and improve margins. What is the capex plan for fiscal 2026, especially in light of the merger-driven expansion? How many more hospitals and beds to come up this fiscal? We plan to add 1,700 beds by FY27, taking the total bed tally in India to over 6,800 through the organic route and will further look for expansion through the inorganic route. Our overall capital allocation for expansion across the domestic market is Rs 1,400 crore, of which we have already spent around Rs 350-400 crore. You have announced a Rs 850-crore investment in Kerala. What is the strategic thinking behind focusing so much on Kerala, which is often seen as a relatively mature market? Kerala is now poised for a significant transformation with a planned investment of Rs 850 crore over the next three years. This expansion will be anchored by two major greenfield projects: Aster Capital Trivandrum, a 454-bed tertiary care facility, and Aster MIMS Kasaragod, a 264-bed multispecialty hospital. In addition, our flagship hospital, Aster Medcity in Kochi, is undergoing a substantial upgrade. By FY27, our total bed capacity in Kerala is expected to reach 3,453, marking a milestone in our journey of delivering quality healthcare and driving sustainable growth. Affordable healthcare remains a chimera for the average citizen. What is Aster doing differently on this front? To balance affordability and sustainability, we centralise complex procedures in larger hospitals, while smaller units focus on primary/secondary care. By FY27, as much as 57% of our planned bed additions will be in tier 2/3 cities, reinforcing our commitment to these regions. Technology is key to bridging gaps, with telemedicine set to grow at 20.7% annually till FY30, reaching $15.1 billion. Our digital health arm is expanding tele-ICU, teleradiology, AI-driven diagnostics, IoT monitoring, and EMR platforms to enhance accessibility, affordability, and quality care nationwide. What are the digital initiatives of the group? Some of our technology-driven, patient-friendly initiatives include the introduction of the Aster Health app that offers appointment bookings, e-pharmacy, and access to digital health records. We have come up with AI-powered diagnostic solutions, including the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome detection tool in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science. We are also expanding the home healthcare services under Aster@Home, providing in-home consultations, diagnostics, and physiotherapy, catering to India's growing elderly and chronic care populations.
