Karnataka rains: Flood warning as outflow from Kabini increased to 25,000 cusecs

The outflow from the Kabini reservoir in Mysuru district of Karnataka was increased to over 25,000 cusecs on June 18, prompting a flood warning for people living downstream.
The Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited (CNNL) has appealed to residents along both banks of the river to avoid going near the water and to shift, along with their domestic animals and cattle, to higher ground for safety.
The outflow was increased consequent to rise in the rate of inflow into the reservoir, which was nearing its capacity. The inflow was 21,545 cusecs at 12 noon on June 18 while the water level was 2,280.84 ft against the capacity of 2,284 feet.
The increase in inflow was attributed to heavy rains in the catchment region of the Kapila river in the Wayanad region of Kerala.
KRS in Mandya
The rate of inflow into the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir in Mandya district has also increased due to heavy rains in Kodagu district. The inflow was 29,368 cusecs while the reservoir level was 113.25 ft against its capacity of 124.80 feet.
Kodagu district was a beneficiary of the early onset of the South West Monsoon this year, but after a week of intense rains in the last week of May, there was a lull. As a result, the figures for June indicated a deficit in rainfall. But the monsoon gained fresh vigour during the last 48 hours, which resulted in an increase in inflow into various reservoirs, including KRS and Harangi.
Though the rains have relatively abated as on June 18, the water flow continues to benefit from the rains received over the past two days.
During the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on June 18, Bhagamandala recorded 91.20 mm of rain while Shanthalli received 80 mm. Napoklu (50.80 mm), Virajpet (49 mm) and Ammathi (47.50 mm) were other areas in the district that received a significant amount of rain.

Shimla: The Southwest Monsoon has advanced over most parts of Himachal Pradesh and reached Pathankot in Punjab on Sunday. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) now extends through Jaipur, Agra, Rampur, Dehradun, Shimla, Pathankot, and Jammu. Meteorological conditions are favourable for the monsoon to progress further into the remaining parts of the North Arabian Sea, additional areas of Rajasthan, and parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and the rest of Himachal Pradesh over the next two days. A trough is currently extending from north Punjab to north Bihar across south Haryana, accompanied by cyclonic circulation associated with a low-pressure area over the central parts of south Uttar Pradesh in the lower tropospheric levels. Due to the influence of these systems, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Punjab and Haryana from June 22 to 26, and over Himachal Pradesh from June 22 to 28. Very heavy rainfall is expected in Himachal Pradesh during June 22 to 26, and in Haryana on June 25. Light to moderate rainfall at most or many places, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, is likely across Northwest India during the period from June 22 to 26.

A.P. records 37.5% deficit rainfall between June 1 and 22

The Southwest Monsoon arrived in the State on May 26, a week ahead of its June 4 arrival, but it has since been playing hide and seek as Andhra Pradesh did not record heavy rainfall between June 1 and 22. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), in its forecast for June, on May 27 had said that the State is likely to see an above-normal rainfall and added that the probabilities of the same were between 30.5% and 55%. As per information on the Andhra Pradesh State Development and Planning Society (APSDPS), there is a 37.5% deficit in rainfall in the State between June 1 and 21. As against the average normal of 76.6 mm rainfall, the State recorded 47.9 mm during this period. At the beginning of the second week, as of June 9, there was a deficit rainfall of 59% in the State. Except for five districts, including Eluru, Krishna, Kurnool, Anantapur, East Godavari, that reported 'normal' rainfall between June 1 and 21, the remaining 21 districts have reported 'deficit' rainfall. Four districts, including Alluri Sitarama Raju, Palnadu, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, have reported 'large deficient' since the rainfall deficit in these districts is more than 60%. Palnadu has the largest deficit percentage of 67.7 as against the normal of 63.4 mm, the district received 20.5 mm rainfall in the first three weeks of June. According by the IMD forecast, for the people in the State there is not much to cheer as not much rain is in store for the State until June 26. Moreover, the weather may remain hot and humid, with daytime temperatures reaching 40°C or more. However, thunderstorms, accompanied with lightning and strong winds, may offer some relief in some pockets.

Rain triggers landslides at several places in Himachal; orange alert issued

The first spell of Southwest monsoon which reached Himachal Pradesh on Friday triggered landslides at several places. The local Met office on Friday issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places on June 22, 23, 25 and 26. Traffic on the Dharmshala-Chataro-Gaggal road was halted due to a landslide, and officials are currently engaged in road-clearing operations, officials said. Reports also emerged of water logging at the Shahid Inder Singh Middle School in Pandoh, which caused inconvenience for students. The Met Office issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rains in isolated parts of the state on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and a yellow warning for heavy rains in isolated areas on Tuesday. Some parts of Shimla witnessed power outages along with landslide with many roads getting blocked in Kangra district. In Shimla, power outages were reported in several areas, with residents complaining of no electricity for the past 10 hours as of Friday morning. The affected areas include Kanlog, Sanjauli, and nearby localities. Residents of these areas said that the power supply was disrupted around midnight, and repeated calls to the local electricity department went unanswered. Landslide was reported in Jutogh Cantt area in Shimla. A four-wheeler was completely damaged after coming under the landslide here. Meanwhile, the electricity supply which had gone out around 12 midnight was only restored around 1pm on Friday. In view of the advancement of Southwest Monsoon over Himachal Pradesh, weather department said that fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely over many parts of low hills/plains & adjoining mid hills and light to moderate rainfall over some parts of the high & adjoining mid hills of the state during 20th to 25th June, 2025 with peak intensity on June 22 and June 25. Vipin Kumar, Sub-Divisional Officer, electricity department, said, 'A power panel has developed a technical snag due to increased moisture in the environment during the ongoing rain. It will take some time to repair the panel. Many of its wires have been affected by carbon deposits. We need to repair all the wires and then dry them using small boilers.'Shimla electricity officer Lokesh Thakur admitted there was an issue. 'There is a fault in the main electricity line supplying power to Kanlog, near the Central Potato Research Institute building. Our staff is working to fix the issue. The rain has made the restoration work more challenging. Electricity supply has been restored in some parts of Sanjauli. Our staff members are on the job,' he added.
