
Three massive asteroids hidden in Venus' shadow could hit Earth with force a million times greater than Hiroshima bomb

According to a new study published in Astronomy and Astrophysics, three massive asteroids—identified as 2020 SB, 524522, and 2020 CL1—have been hiding in a blind spot behind Venus, shielded from Earth-based telescopes by the Sun's intense glare. These so-called 'Venus co-orbitals' are now being monitored closely due to their alarming proximity to Earth's orbit.
City-Killer Threats Hiding in the Shadows
These asteroids, ranging in diameter from 330 to 1,300 feet, are large enough to wipe out entire cities if they were to impact Earth. Scientists estimate that an impact would create a crater over two miles wide, triggering catastrophic firestorms and tsunamis. The energy released could be more than a million times that of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.
Unlike most near-Earth objects, these asteroids don't follow stable trajectories. Researchers warn that even minor gravitational changes—from a passing planet or another asteroid—could alter their paths, sending them hurtling toward Earth.
Minimal Distance, Maximum Risk
The three asteroids raise particular concern because of their Minimal Orbital Intersection Distance (MOID) — the closest point between their orbit and Earth's. All three have MOIDs of less than 0.0005 astronomical units (AU), putting them closer to Earth than the Moon at certain points in their orbit.

"Their orbits sync with Venus, but that doesn't protect us. These objects can still intersect with Earth's path and potentially collide," said lead researcher Valerio Carruba from São Paulo State University.
Currently, 20 Venus co-orbital asteroids are known, but researchers believe many more remain hidden due to their location in Earth's observational blind spot.
A Call for Vigilance — and Action
While Earth-based telescopes like the upcoming Rubin Observatory in Chile might detect such asteroids, the reaction window is dangerously narrow—possibly just two to four weeks between detection and impact.
To improve early detection, scientists suggest deploying a dedicated space probe near Venus, capable of scanning the region currently invisible to telescopes on Earth.
"We need to map these hidden threats before it's too late," the researchers concluded.
Should We Be Worried?
Given their size, energy potential, and unpredictable orbits, these asteroids are not just theoretical threats. They are real and largely untracked hazards—cosmic wildcards that could, under the right conditions, strike Earth with devastating consequences.
For now, scientists continue to track them closely—but the study highlights an urgent need for better detection systems that go beyond Earth's line of sight.

Macron challenges Europe to rival US, China in space

Speaking at the Paris Airshow on Friday, after France moved to take control of Starlink competitor Eutelsat , Macron called for an energetic push spanning launchers to manufacturing and services as he set out a strategy to counter the sprawling rocket-to-telecoms interests of U.S. billionaire Elon Musk. Staged amid the conflict between Israel and Iran, the world's largest aerospace event has mostly been dominated by geopolitical and trade tensions and fragile supply chains, rather than the usual glittering jetliner order announcements. On Friday, attention turned from defence displays to space. "At the intersection of all these public and private questions, as well as civil, military, scientific and industrial ones, space has in some way become a gauge of international power," Macron said in a speech to delegates. Europe has taken a lead in Earth observation but has struggled for years to keep up with the United States and China in a domain now considered as strategic as the planet's oceans. It lost independent access to orbit for more than a year in 2023 following technical problems, delays and a breakdown of ties with Russia over Ukraine that halted use of Soyuz rockets. Despite Europe being the world's largest exporter of satellites, its two main manufacturers - Airbus and a tie-up between Thales and Italy's Leonardo - have struggled to make money and want to pool those activities. "They have our full support and confidence. I want us to build this new champion as soon as possible," Macron said. "This is what will allow us, as Europeans, to have the scale to improve competitiveness and volume. It's a sector consolidation." Under pressure from Musk's cheaper low Earth-orbit Starlink satellites and a shift away from bespoke satellites in higher orbit, Airbus, Thales and Leonardo have said they are discussing plans code-named Project Bromo to forge a combined venture. U.S. and Chinese spending on space dwarfs European budgets and insiders say industrial squabbling has curbed co-operation. The European Space Agency says the U.S. accounted for nearly two-thirds of the global space budget in 2023; Europe just 11%. Space budgets may get a lift from defence funds flowing into the sector. But fiscal room for Macron's new agenda is tight. Pune scientist leads global team helping ALS patients regain voice
PUNE A Pune-based scientist is front and centre of a major milestone in neurotechnology – an implant-based brain-computer interface (BCI) that enables an individual with advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to speak in real time with natural intonation, and even sing. (HT) Dr Maitreyee Wairagkar – a former student of Jnana Prabodhini (Nigdi) and Fergusson College who completed her Engineering Masters and Ph.D. from the United Kingdom and is now based at UC Davis as 'project scientist' to lead the project since the last three years – has set an example of what Indian girls can achieve provided they get a chance. Dr Wairagkar – working with her team of researchers at UC Davis's Neuroprosthetics Laboratory since the last three years – has led the project from conception to design to execution and developed this 'first-in-world' technology that demonstrates a brain-to-voice neuroprosthesis capable of synthesising speech with less than a 25-millisecond delay, virtually indistinguishable from natural vocal feedback. Dr Wairagkar is the first author on the study published in the scientific journal, 'Nature' on June 12, 2025. Drawing on Dr Wairagkar's expertise, her team has developed algorithms to extract and denoise neural features, train phoneme and pitch decoders, and craft a full end-to-end voice synthesis system. Dr Wairagkar and team have enabled the decoding of fine-grained paralinguistic cues, allowing the user to express not just words but also emotion and melody. The system uses 256 microscale electrodes implanted in the ventral precentral gyrus, which is the part of the brain crucial for speech production. In the course of the study, as the participant attempted to speak, neural signals were decoded in real time into phonemes and paralinguistic features like pitch and emphasis and subsequently transformed into audible speech through a vocoder and speaker system. Importantly, the participant was not only able to communicate new words but also ask questions, shift intonation, and sing simple melodies in a major leap towards expressive, spontaneous communication. About the achievement, Dr Wairagkar said, 'What makes this technology extraordinary is not just that it translates brain activity into speech, but that it does so with the flow and character of natural voice. That expressiveness is what makes real conversation possible, and human.' Dr Wairagkar's contributions allowed the participant to control tone and stress in real time; a feature absent in earlier BCIs that often relied on slow, word-by-word output. Senior researchers at UC Davis, including Dr Sergey Stavisky and neurosurgeon Dr David Brandman, emphasised the emotional and practical impact of the work. 'This is the first time we have been able to restore a participant's own voice in real time, allowing him not only to talk but to sound like himself,' said Dr Stavisky. Dr Brandman—who implanted the arrays under the BrainGate2 clinical trial—highlighted the emotional power of restoring not just speech, but the participant's own voice. Test listeners recognised nearly 60% of the words correctly when BCI-driven voice was used (compared to just 4% intelligibility in natural, dysarthric speech), underscoring dramatic improvements in communication clarity. The neuroprosthesis not only decodes speech at the phoneme level but also captures prosody—how a sentence is said—making it the closest attempt yet at recreating natural, flowing conversation from thought alone. This milestone represents a profound shift in assistive communication for people living with ALS, brainstem strokes, or other forms of locked-in syndrome. It also puts India at the centre of a transformative global scientific collaboration through Dr Wairagkar's involvement. The researchers note that although the findings are promising, brain-to-voice neuroprostheses remain in an early phase. A key limitation is that the research was performed with a single participant with ALS. It will be crucial to replicate these results with more participants, including those who have speech loss from other causes such as stroke. As further trials progress and the technology is refined, experts believe this innovation could redefine how neurotechnology restores voice and identity for millions who are otherwise left voiceless.
