Manhattanhenge Through a Lens: Tips for Getting the Perfect Shot

Photographer Gary Hershorn hasn't missed a Manhattanhenge in more than a decade. Each year he joins the crowds attempting to capture the fleeting moment when the setting sun perfectly aligns with the island's grid. Over the years he has watched the city and the spectacle transform from behind his lens.
'It's one of those crazy New York events that capture everybody's attention,' he said.
Mr. Hershorn, who is the director of photography for ABC News Digital, shared his best tips for capturing the celestial phenomenon, which is scheduled to happen Wednesday and Thursday night shortly after 8 p.m.
The sun and the city's grid should align Wednesday evening beginning around 8:13 p.m., but Manhattanhenge will be hard to capture because the forecast calls for overcast skies and rain.
Tonight is a 'bust,' Mr. Hershorn said.
He may try tomorrow night instead, when there should be some sun come sunset. And if that doesn't work, there will be a second Manhattanhenge in July.
Mr. Hershorn recommends viewing Manhattanhenge on a double wide street that has traffic in both directions, such as 14th Street, 34th Street or 42nd Street.
He used to shoot along 34th Street to capture the Empire State Building in the foreground of his photos, but the construction of Hudson Yards obscured the view. The same went for 57th Street, a once-good vantage point now encroached upon by the newly built skyscrapers along Billionaire's Row.
That leaves 42nd Street. The Park Avenue bridge next to Grand Central Terminal in Pershing Square provides elevation and a good view down the street, but is open to traffic, which means police officers will often shoo away crowds of spectators (and photographers), Mr. Hershorn said.
His preferred perch is on a one-way bridge across 42nd Street between First and Second Avenue, though it has suffered from a narrowing perspective over the years, as trees on either of the street have grown larger, rendering what was once 100 feet of view into 25 feet.
Also, as Instagram became more popular, the bridge became more hectic during Manhattanhenge.
'Ten or 12 years ago, you could walk up to that bridge an hour before Manhattanhenge happened, find a spot and have no problem doing it,' Mr. Hershorn said. 'In today's world, people are up there at like 9 in the morning.'
When Manhattanhenge occurs during the winter, Mr. Hershorn gets a sunrise version by shooting from Weehawken in New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan. The cliffs on the Jersey side give him the elevated perspective he looks for, and the sunrise effect is the same, he said.
Long Island City in Queens, on the other side of the city, should work the same way for the sunset version of Manhattanhenge, but according to Mr. Hershorn, the United Nations headquarters on 42nd Street takes up too much of the foreground in the photos.
'It's one of those moments where the phone can actually produce a better quality image than a camera does,' Mr. Hershorn said.
On a camera, adjusting the exposure for the shadows makes the sun too bright, and adjusting the exposure for the sun makes it impossible to see the street. But on a smartphone, a setting called HDR, or High Dynamic Range, balances the light better than a traditional camera.
The sun is the star of Manhattanhenge, but the people it brings out can be just as interesting.
'It's a scene that you want to capture,' Mr. Hershorn said. 'It's a scene that you want to be a part of, like a party.'
During this time, 42nd Street becomes 'hysterical,' he said, filled with honking taxi cabs and commuters trying to pick through the crowds.
'All I want to say to them is, just stop your life for five minutes and watch,' Mr. Hershorn said. 'Don't be in such a hurry to get somewhere. The people are not moving. So calm down, open your car door, stand up and just watch.'

A black bear was twice spotted near downtown Greenville, according to several social media reports on June 19 and June 20. Rep. Chandra Dillard posted about the sighting on social media. "Everyone loves Greenville; even the bears," she wrote in her post. The bear was spotted in the Poe Mill, James St., Southern Side neighborhoods, according to her post. "Don't engage. Call SC DNR 1-800-922-5431," she advised. WYFF 4 reported that "a black bear was spotted twice in 24 hours near downtown Greenville." The first sighting occurred on the night of June 19 on 6th Avenue near the Poe Mill area, and the bear was spotted again on June 20 on James Street, according to WYFF. Black bears are roaming in the Upstate, and they're on the prowl for food. Last year, there were 450 black bear sightings in the region, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Sightings are on the rise due to increased human activity and development in bear habitat and the use of technology like doorbell cameras, which allow for more sightings to be captured. But is this reason to be worried about black bears? Not exactly. "Black bears are so timid today partly because they evolved alongside such powerful predators as saber-toothed cats, American lions, dire wolves and short-faced bears, all of which became extinct only about 12,000 years ago," said the North American Bear Center. "Black bears were the only one of these that could climb trees, so black bears survived by staying near trees and developing the attitude: run first and ask questions later. The timid ones passed on their genes to create the black bear of today." Here's what to know about black bears in the state. Black bears are omnivores that eat both plants and animals. Their diet generally consists of berries, nuts, insects, fish, and meat. Because black bears are opportunistic, they will devour anything that is readily available, including human food and garbage. The black bear diet is also highly dependent on season and location. Offensive black bear attacks are rare and usually occur in remote areas where bears come in contact with humans the least, per the North American Bear Center. "The 750,000 black bears of North America kill less than one person per year on average, while men 18-24 are 167 times more likely to kill someone than a black bear," the center said. When a human is attacked by a black bear, it is typically a defensive reaction to the person being too close ― a situation that is easily avoidable. Injuries that occur are usually minor. Since most black bears in the wild today are timid, they are more likely to run away to a tree when frightened. "By contrast, startled grizzlies may charge and occasionally attack, making grizzlies over 20 times more dangerous than black bears," per the center. According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, there has never been a fatality or even an attack attributed to a black bear in S.C. In the eastern U.S., only two human fatalities attributed to bears have occurred over the last 100 years. Current sustaining black bear populations exist in the mountains/upper Piedmont and northern coastal counties. Never feed or approach bears. Intentionally feeding bears or allowing them to find anything that smells or tastes like food teaches bears to approach homes and people looking for more. Secure food, garbage and recycling. Food and food odors attract bears, so do not reward them with easily available food, liquids or garbage. Remove bird feeders when bears are active. Birdseed and grains have lots of calories, so they are attractive to bears. Removing feeders is the best way to avoid creating conflicts with bears. Never leave pet food outdoors. Feed pets indoors when possible. If you must feed pets outside, feed in single portions and remove bowls afterwards. Store pet food where bears cannot see or smell it. Clean and store grills, smokers. Clean grills after each use and make sure that all grease, fat and food particles are removed. Store clean grills and smokers in a secure area that keeps bears out. (Photo by) Getty Images Macy's famous 4th of July fireworks display in New York routinely switches back and forth between the rivers that border Manhattan; last year it was on the Hudson, this year it returns to the stretch of the East River surrounding the Brooklyn Bridge and the Seaport District. That means that several restaurants in that area will have unobstructed views and apart from the viewing opportunity, they're also featuring culinary offerings at the same level of the show. The House of the Red Pearl, one of the restaurant stops in the "Taste of Tin" on July 4th in the Tin Building by Jean-Georges. Tin Building by Jean-Georges Before the sky lights up, the Tin Building by Jean-Georges, star chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's curated assortment of restaurants and food markets on the site of the former Fulton Fish Market, is offering a run through the various restaurants' specialties. The 'Taste of Tin' from 6:30 to 10 PM spotlights some of the chef's favorites: a selection of dim sum from The House of the Red Pearl; Steak Frites and Gruyère Cheeseburgers from T. Brasserie; specialty pizzas from The Frenchman's Dough; seafood creations including classic lobster rolls; cookies from the bakery and other treats. A premium open bar (including non-alcoholic offerings) is included in the ticket price (early bird tickets start at $353.86.) Afterward, although the bridge itself won't be visible, prime reserved seats on the South Plaza will have clear views of the fireworks launching from barges. A Chophouse Spread at the restaurant Carne Mare. Carne Mare Elsewhere on Pier 17 (but not the Rooftop—Macy's has full possession of that-or Chef Vongerichten's The Fulton unless you're invited to the private party there), another star chef, Andrew Carmellini, is presenting a chophouse celebration for the first year at his restaurant Carne Mare starting at 6:30 PM. (Early bird tickets: $325 plus tax.) Among the offerings: passed canapés such as Mozzarella Sticks & Caviar, Spicy Crab Lettuce Cups, Corn Agnolotti with black truffle and Scallops with saffron and trout roe alongside a raw bar of oysters, shrimp cocktail and snow crab claws. There will also be a carving station with Porchetta-Spiced Prime Rib, rustic potatoes, broccolini, and creamed spinach in addition to Wagyu Dogs and Grilled Clams from the grill. For dessert: Red, White & Blue Sorbet Cones, Lemon Meringue Tarts, Bomboloni and assorted festive biscotti. And after all of that: a reserved viewing space on Pier 17. The view from Harriet's Rooftop at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge Over in Brooklyn, guests at Harriet's Rooftop at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge will have a clear view of all from both the outdoor space and the floor to ceiling glass walled interior from 5 to 9 PM. There are several tiers of price and access: starting at $495.99 for general admission both to the rooftop and interior lounge plus an open bar and buffet; a starting price of $6,000 for a table indoors that includes bottle service, the buffet and an elevated menu including sushi, chilled seafood platters and caviar; a starting price of $10,000 for a table on the rooftop including bottle service and the same elevated food offerings and $15,000 for the same bottle service and food offerings with a table on the pool deck plus pool access for those who want to swim while watching the light show. Ali Garber Around the corner, on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge, Time Out Market New York will offer clear views and a party atmosphere with live music on the fifth floor rooftop from 7 to 11 PM. There are ticket options for viewing only without the food ($160.10) but those opting for the buffet ($318.80) will get an unlimited spread from several of the market's vendors. Among them: Bark Barbecue known for their ribs, brisket and pulled pork; pizza specialist Fornino; plant-based Chinese specialties from The Rogue Panda and selections from the Levant region from Tanoreen. Providing the music: DJ Price Is Right; Natasha Diggs; L3NI of Soul in the Horn and DJ Scratch.
