Kevin Thelwell gets ruthless with Rangers stars as sporting director sees no limit to Ibrox exits
The club's sporting director admits i;ts inevitable more players will leave but won't put an exact number on departures
Kevin Thelwell says he won't shy away from making ruthless decisions on Rangers players' futures.
The Ibrox club's new sporting director has already started work, along with new boss Russell Martin, on overhauling the squad.
And Thelwell insists they're ready to make big calls to make Rangers stronger - and ensure they hit the ground running ahead in the new campaign.
The pair have already targeted certain players, including the likes of Leicester City defender Conor Coady and Israeli striker Dor Turgeman.
But there is still uncertainty over a number of current stars who under-performed at Ibrox last term.
Thelwell says they'll be decisive in rebuilding a squad so that it's capable of immediately challenging for trophies this season.
When asked if there could be as many as 12 players leaving and the same amount coming in, he said: ' I probably wouldn't want to put a number on it at the moment.
'Clearly, there's been work being done behind the scenes already.
'We've been evaluating and reviewing the current group that we've got.
'There are some very good players here at Rangers. But with every football club, there's room for improvement, isn't there?
'We want to go into the transfer market and find opportunities that help the team be better and stronger.
'Now that Russell is here as head coach, we've got a chance to sit down very quickly and talk more about what the group looks like and what we need to do going forward.
'We have to make some hard, fast decisions and then hopefully start to quickly build a team that helps us to win.'
Rangers might have to field bids for some of their sellable assets this summer, with the likes of Nico Raskin, Mohamed Diomande and Hamza Igamane linked with moves away from Ibrox.
Thelwell admits there will be changes to the squad but is adamant that he and Martin want to come out of the summer window with a stronger pool of players than they've got now.
The former Everton sporting director said: 'From my perspective, we want the strongest team possible.
'We all understand there's going to be some players coming in and others who will leave.
'That has to be part of any plan, effectively. But in reality, where we want to be is making sure that by the time the transfer window closes - the team looks stronger for the work we've done during that trading period.
'That's what we'll be working on.'

But just below that, so he can calmly adapt to the level. "Make no mistake: Nico has a lot of room to grow. "He has to make the right choice now. And if he leaves and gets enough playing time at his new club, he will only get better. I would put my hand in the fire for that." Clement, who handed Raskin the captain's armband for an Old Firm clash with Celtic back in January, added: "He's a character. I worked with him intensively for a year at Rangers. Nico wants to know everything, gets into discussions and has his own opinion. But if you communicate and argue clearly, there's no problem at all. "I like players with an opinion. I didn't just give him the captain's armband for nothing. That way he could grow as a footballer and take on more responsibility. "He has good feet and plays energetic football, but the most important step Nico has taken is that he has become tactically stronger. That's why he was ready for the national team - something I said six months ago. I've talked to him about it a lot. "Nico was a firefighter. You know? He often went somewhere else to put out fires and that caused problems in his zone. He doesn't do that anymore. "I wasn't surprised when he played so well for Belgium on his debut. He's played a lot of European matches. Both with Standard Liege and Rangers. "When you play against teams like Manchester United, Spurs, Benfica or Real means it's nothing new for him to play against top players. "Playing for his country was a huge honour for him. Nico benefits from that - he's a born winner.'

Hundreds wave off Wales as they head to the Euros
Hundreds of people gathered at Cardiff Airport today (Sunday, June 21) to wave off Wales as they flew to Portugal for their training camp ahead of the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 tournament. The Euros, which will be held in Switzerland next month, will be the squad's first major tournament. Wales kick-off their campaign against the Netherlands in Lucerne on July 5. Their remaining two games are in St Gallen with France on July 9 and against reigning European champions England on July 13. Football fans of all ages cheered Rhian Wilkinson's squad on at the airport just days after the selected 23 players were announced on the top of Yr Wyddfa, Wales' highest mountain. Speaking amongst the crowds ahead of the journey to Switzerland, Jess Fishlock - former Wales Captain and all time highest goal scorer - said: "It's huge, it's so nice that they [the fans] came out and hopefully we are an inspiration for them and their future and it shows how much support we have from the nation. "I'm super excited, I think today it has finally hit home what we are doing and I just can't wait to get there. "This is the best moment of my career, no doubt about that, and I am just excited to go on the big stage with my Welsh girls." Of those announced in the squad on Monday was Sophie Ingle who has been out since September with an injury. The 33-year-old damaged her anterior cruciate ligament whilst playing for Chelsea in a pre-season friendly. Ingle who has won 141 caps and led Wales 83 times from 2015 to 2024 before stepping down from the role – has been in a race against time to make next month's Euros in Switzerland. Last month Wilkinson rated the former Wales captain as '50-50' to play at the Euros, saying she 'wanted her back but not at the risk of Sophie Ingle's knee'. Wilkinson's 23-strong squad for Wales' first major tournament includes a few surprises. Defender Rhiannon Roberts is included after injury ruled her out of Nations League action last month, and veteran forward Jess Fishlock is the star name in a squad skippered by her Seattle Reign team-mate Angharad James. The former Everton and Tottenham midfielder is one of four centurions in the squad, alongside Fishlock, Ingle and Hayley Ladd. Aston Villa goalkeeper Soffia Kelly, Manchester City defender Mayzee Davies, Bristol City forward Tianna Teisar and Manchester United striker Mared Griffiths miss out after being in the squad for last month's Nations League games against Denmark and Italy. The 18-year-old Davies suffered a rupture to her ACL against Denmark and faces a considerable spell on the sidelines.
