UP: Devotees take holy dip in Ganga on Somvati Amavasya in Haridwar
Haridwar (Uttarakhand) [India], May 26 (ANI): Thousands of devotees converged in Haridwar early Monday morning to take a holy dip in the river Ganga on the occasion of Somvati Amavasya.
Somvati Amavasya holds a special significance in Hinduism, wherein devotees perform bathing, charity, worship, and rituals for their ancestors.
It is believed that bathing in holy rivers and doing charity on this day lead to the attainment of merit.
Pilgrims from various parts of the country gathered at the ghats to perform these sacred practices, driven by the belief that such acts bring blessings, prosperity, and divine grace.
Ashwini Kumar, who has come from Delhi to take a holy dip in the river Ganga, said, 'We keep coming here, and at least when we do, we take a bath two or three times. It feels very good; it feels very religious, and there is some kind of atmosphere.'
Umesh Kaushik, who hails from Haryana, is visiting Haridwar with his friends. 'We have come here to bathe in the Ganga on Somvati Amavasya, and this is a very good, auspicious Nakshatra. Which we have had the opportunity to bathe in. By bathing in the Ganges. This is a very auspicious moment for us that we have come to bathe in the Ganges today.'
Somvati Amavasya is dedicated to worshipping ancestors or forefathers, and hence, people are advised to use it to get rid of 'Pitru Dosha'.
On this day, people go for a holy dip in holy rivers and perform rituals like havan and yajna, charity, feeding animals, and reciting mantras.
Rama Padmani, from Gujarat's Surat, said that she prayed for the betterment of all Indians on this occasion. 'I have come from Surat, Gujarat, and today is Somvati Amavasya.' We came here to Haridwar and took a bath. We are feeling very good about Aarti and the aura here is different, and the mind is calm. Everyone enjoyed it very much. Ganga benefits everyone. We have asked for the welfare of all Indians.'
An Amavasya falling on Mondays has a special significance and hence is being celebrated as Somvati Amavasya to honour ancestors. (ANI)

Chennai-bound IndiGo flight issued 'fuel mayday' call, diverted to Bengaluru: Sources
New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): An IndiGo flight (6E 6764) from Guwahati to Chennai was forced to divert to Bengaluru after the pilot issued a 'fuel mayday' call due to insufficient fuel in the plane, sources said on Saturday. According to sources, the incident occurred on Thursday. The pilot did not get clearance to land in Chennai due to congestion at the airport. 'The diversion occurred because of congestion at Chennai airport, which prevented the aircraft from landing there in time. Passengers were on board during the emergency reroute,' they said. 'The flight landed safely in Bengaluru at 8:15 PM. During the refuelling process, passengers were provided refreshments, and their baggage was offloaded. Due to Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), the airline had to arrange for a fresh crew,' sources said, adding that the flight subsequently departed for Chennai at 10:24 PM. Earlier on Tuesday, June 17, an Indigo flight from Muscat to Kochi, and further to Delhi, was diverted to Nagpur due to security concerns. According to the airline, the flight 6E1272, travelling from Muscat to Kochi, while continuing as flight 6E2706 from Kochi to Delhi, was rerouted to Nagpur on Tuesday due to a security issue. The plane landed safely at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, and all passengers were safely disembarked. 'We confirm receiving a security concern pertaining to IndiGo flight 6E1272 flying from Muscat to Kochi when the aircraft was operating its subsequent sector from Kochi to Delhi as 6E2706 on 17 June 2025. Following protocol, the relevant authorities were immediately informed, and the aircraft was diverted to Nagpur,' an airline spokesperson said. (ANI)

Air India Express flight to Patna diverted to Varanasi due to bad weather
New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): An Air India Express flight from Delhi to Patna was diverted to Varanasi on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions. An airline spokesperson said that Air India Express flight IX1014 from Delhi (DEL) to Patna (PAT) on 21 June 2025 was diverted to Varanasi (VNS). 'Due to adverse weather conditions, one of our flights to Patna was diverted briefly to Varanasi. When the weather improved, the flight resumed and landed in Patna. We regret the delay caused by circumstances beyond our control,' the spokesperson said. Earlier in the week, on Monday, another Air India Express flight from Delhi to Ranchi had to return to the national capital shortly after takeoff due to a suspected technical issue. The airline said the Boeing 737 Max 8 plane was scheduled to land at Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport at 6:20 PM. After the inspection and clearance, the aircraft continued its normal operations. 'One of our flights returned to Delhi after take-off due to a suspected technical issue. Post inspections and clearance, the aircraft continued scheduled operations. We regret the inconvenience,' the airline spokesperson said. Earlier on Friday, Air India cancelled several international and domestic flights due to increased aircraft checks, bad weather, and airspace restrictions. Affected flights include services between Dubai, Chennai, Delhi, Melbourne, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. According to an Air India's statement, 'Air India's international flights AI906 from Dubai to Chennai; AI308 from Delhi to Melbourne; AI309 from Melbourne to Delhi; AI2204 from Dubai to Hyderabad and domestic flights AI874 from Pune to Delhi; AI456 from Ahmedabad to Delhi; AI-2872 from Hyderabad to Mumbai and AI571 from Chennai to Mumbai have been cancelled due to enhanced maintenance and operational reasons.' The airline has offered full refunds or free rescheduling and is helping passengers with alternate travel plans. 'We regret the inconvenience caused to passengers. Our colleagues on ground are making alternative arrangements for them to fly to their respective destinations at the earliest. Full refunds on cancellation or complimentary rescheduling has been offered to passengers,' it said. (ANI)

Homeward bound: City prof starts 1.5k km journey to Mashhad to escape from Iran
Kolkata: It is a race against time for geography professor Falguni Dey to travel from Astara to Mashhad, through the war-ravaged Iran, where India has already started an evacuation operation. Hopeful of getting entry through the Nurduz-Agarak border to Armenia, which has allowed hundreds of Indians to cross the border and head back home, Dey had applied for an e-visa with the country. On Friday late evening, Armenia declined his visa application, leaving Dey hapless and desperate. Azerbaijan, which has also been allowing foreign nationals, kept silent on his application as well. Desperate to escape Iran, Dey called up an official at the Indian embassy in Tehran on Friday night. "He suggested I reach Mashhad somehow as the Indian authorities have already started evacuating from there. There is no other way out for me. It is going to be nearly a 1,500 km journey from the northwest of Iran to the west of the country," Dey told TOI over phone. India launched Operation Sindhu earlier this week to evacuate Indians stranded in Iran after Tehran agreed to lift airspace restrictions as a "special gesture". During the evacuation operation, India evacuated 517 nationals from Iran by Saturday morning. Mashhad is close to Iran's border with Turkmenistan, and India started evacuating through a safe air corridor. Virtually penniless, Dey, on Friday night, approached a car driver who agreed to take him on the arduous and dangerous route to Mashhad. He was like a Godsend to me, ready to take a stranger on a 1,500 km journey with just an assurance to be paid later," he said. Vibrant and noisy Tehran and the adjoining areas have transformed into abandoned streets amid an eerie silence. "We will try to bypass Tehran. We are not sure if there will be a fresh phase of attack," said Dey. While the internet is cut off in large parts of Iran, Mashhad still has connectivity. "I will be able to receive and send documents only when I am in Mashhad. I hope it will be a little better among many other Indians."
