US envoy says Hezbollah involvement in Iran-Israel war would be ‘very bad decision'
BEIRUT: The US special envoy for Syria Tom Barrack warned Lebanese group Hezbollah on Thursday against getting involved in the war between its main backer Iran and Israel.
Barrack, who is also the US ambassador to Turkey, is on his first visit to Beirut, where he met top Lebanese officials including parliament speaker Nabih Berri, an ally of Hezbollah.
'I can say on behalf of President (Donald) Trump… that would be a very, very, very bad decision,' Barrack said after his meeting with Berri, responding to a question on what the US position would be on any involvement by Hezbollah in the war.
In a statement, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said the group will 'act as we see fit'.
'Tyrannical America and criminal Israel will not be able to subjugate the Iranian people and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,' Qassem said.
Hezbollah, he added, still had 'the responsibility to stand by Iran and provide it with all forms of support that contribute to putting an end to this tyranny and oppression'.
Hezbollah suffered devastating losses in its war against Israel last year, which ended with a ceasefire agreement in November.

When Israel struck Iran last week, the Lebanese foreign ministry said that it was 'continuing its contacts' to spare the country from being dragged into any conflict.
In a statement shared by the Lebanese presidency after his meeting with Barrack, President Joseph Aoun said that 'communications are ongoing to achieve the goal of weapons monopoly at both the Lebanese and Palestinian levels, and will intensify after stability returns… to the region'.
According to the November ceasefire agreement, Hezbollah must pull its fighters back north of the Litani river, some 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Israeli border, leaving the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed parties in the area.
Israel is required to fully withdraw its troops but has kept them in five locations in Lebanon it deems 'strategic'.
Lebanon has also recently ramped up efforts to disarm Palestinian groups, which for decades had been in charge of Palestinian refugee camps in the country.
After his meeting with Barrack, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed Lebanon's 'commitment to the choice of security and stability and rejection of being dragged into the ongoing war in the region'.
He also asked the US envoy 'to assist Lebanon in pressuring Israel for its complete withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories'.
Despite the ongoing ceasefire, Israel has carried out repeated strikes in Lebanon, which it has said will continue until Hezbollah has been disarmed.
An Israeli strike killed one person in the southern village of Hula on Thursday, the Lebanese health ministry said.

Buying at PSX, KSE-100 gains over 600 points
Buying momentum was observed at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining over 600 points during the opening minutes of trading on Friday. At 9:35am, the benchmark index was hovering at 120,609.85 level, an increase of 607.26 points or 0.51%. Across-the-board buying was seen in key sectors including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs, power generation and refinery. Brent fell 2% on Friday to $77.22 per barrel, but is still headed for a strong weekly gain of 4%, following a 12% surge the previous week. Still, a cautious mood prevailed in markets with Nasdaq futures and S&P 500 futures both 0.3% lower in Asia. U.S. markets were closed for the Juneteenth holiday, offering little direction for Asia. The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged up 0.1% but was set for a weekly drop of 1%. Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.2%. China's blue chips rose 0.3%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.5%, after the central bank held the benchmark lending rates steady as widely expected. In the currency markets, the dollar was on the back foot again, slipping 0.2% to 145.17 yen after data showed Japan's core inflation hit a two-year high in May, which kept pressure on the Bank of Japan to resume interest rate hikes. JUI-F chief criticises Pakistan govt's economic, foreign policies
ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Thursday delivered a scathing critique of the country's current economic and political direction, warning that national policies are increasingly shaped by foreign influences, particularly the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Speaking during the ongoing debate on the Finance Bill 2025-26 in National Assembly, Rehman claimed that although the federal budget was presented by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, it was effectively drafted under the IMF's guidance. He criticised the government for failing to meet GDP growth targets and questioned its claims of economic progress. 'There can be no economic stability without justice for the people,' he said, calling for an end to what he termed political victimisation. Turning to the role of the armed forces, Rehman acknowledged their 'unparalleled' professional and defence capabilities but criticised them for exceeding their constitutional mandate. 'Our military performed commendably in recent clashes with India, largely because the nation was united behind it,' he said. 'That unity was missing during the 1971 debacle – what followed needs no explanation. The military must adhere to its constitutional mandate.' He argued that these capabilities could be further strengthened if the military remained within its constitutional boundaries and refrained from interfering in politics. 'It is no secret to anyone how the military influences parliament,' he remarked. 'We've been engaged in the war against terrorism for four decades, yet we still struggle to establish lasting peace in our own country.' On Pakistan's international standing, the JUI-F leader lamented the country's diminished leadership role in the Islamic world. 'We are a nuclear power and ought to be leading the Islamic world. Instead, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has become irrelevant, and the United Nations serves the interests of the United States.' He also criticised recent legislation that sets the minimum legal age for marriage at 18, claiming it was passed under pressure from the United Nations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). 'Are we being stripped of our intellectual rights,' he asked. 'If this is the agenda being pushed by the powers that be, I will wage a war against it through the platform of parliament.' Commenting on global affairs, Rehman referenced a recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir. 'Trump may have said there should be no war between Pakistan and India, or between Iran and Israel. But did he say there should be no war against Palestine? No.' He urged Pakistan to adopt a clear stance in support of Iran and Palestine. 'Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon have already been devastated. Pakistan could be the next.' Taking part in the debate, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) lawmaker Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari urged the government to prioritise education and resolve prolonged power outages disproportionately affecting the country's poor. Lauding her brother, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, for his efforts in promoting Pakistan's image abroad in wake of recent Pakistan-India clashes, Aseefa said the country must unite in the face of adversity. 'If Pakistan faces another crisis, every woman, child, and youth will stand up for it,' she added. She also paid tribute to the armed forces, particularly for their role in recent skirmishes involving the country's nuclear-armed neighbour India. Calling education a national priority, she criticised the persistent under-funding of the sector. 'It is shameful that in 2025, many people are still deprived of electricity,' she said, pointing to load-shedding of up to 15 hours a day in different parts of the country and warning of the toll on working-class communities. She called for increased investment in human development, urgent action on energy shortages, and economic reforms to boost growth and reduce reliance on external lenders. Qamarul Islam voiced confidence that the Budget 2025-26 would lay the foundation for long-term economic growth. Amir Dogar advocated for an increase in the minimum wage to 50,000 rupees to alleviate pressure on low-income workers. Health Minister Mustafa Kamal called for a national policy to curb population growth, while Shagufta Jumani urged investment in water reservoirs to combat worsening shortages. Saad Waseem praised the government's economic team for presenting what he called a 'balanced budget,' citing improvements in key indicators. Muhammad Atif stressed that increased tax collection could only come from a stronger economy, not higher rates. Illegal weapons, liquor case: Gandapur's non-bailable arrest warrants suspended
ISLAMABAD: A local court on Thursday suspended the non-bailable arrest warrants issued for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur in a case related to alleged possession of illegal weapons and liquor. Judicial Magistrate Mubashir Hussain Chishti, while hearing the case registered at Bhara Kahu police station, suspended Gandpur's warrants. Gandapur appeared before Mubashir Hassan Chishti along with his legal team, marking his first appearance in the case after issuance of his warrant. During proceedings, Gandpur's counsel Raja Zahoorul Hasan told the court that his client personally appeared before the court. He informed the court that the Peshawar High Court (PHC) had already granted interim bail to the chief minister until July 3. He requested the court to suspend the non-bailable arrest warrants following Gandapur's court appearance. In response, the court asked about the submission of a statement under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), to which Gandapur assured that the required responses would be submitted after the presentation of the provincial budget. The court approved Gandapur's request and suspended the non-bailable arrest warrants and adjourned the hearing until July 2. It is pertinent to mention here that the court had issued an arrest warrant for Gandapur on September 4, 2024 for not appearing before the court. Gandapur, while talking to the media after appearing before the court, criticised the ongoing legal actions against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership and party workers. He stated that numerous cases against the PTI founding chairman and workers are wasting their time and energy. 'These cases are wasting the time and energy of our leadership and workers,' he said, adding that 'once the judiciary is truly independent and all institutions operate within constitutional limits, such challenges will naturally end.' He condemned the recent Israeli attacks on Iran and Palestine and expressed solidarity with both nations. Gandapur also expressed a desire to witness and participate in 'Ghazwa-e-Hind.' To a question about US President Donald Trump and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir's meeting, he said that he had no information and therefore could not comment.
