Edinburgh locals captured the terrifying moment a fire tore through the iconic banana flats on Friday night.
Cables Wynd House saw a large fire break out around 10.50pm on June 6, with fire services battling the blaze for over eight hours.
Video footage shared with Edinburgh Live shows flames pouring from the windows of a flat near the top floor.
Some residents filmed from the ground while others captured the chaos from inside Cables Wynd flats across a courtyard. Smoke can be seen billowing into the air from the scene.
Police Scotland confirmed the flat was empty at the time and no one was hospitalised following the incident. All residents, bar two households, have been allowed to return to the building.
A message on Cables Wynd House's Facebook called the fire "heartbreaking" and said residents are "waiting for answers" following the "scary experience".

Locals and politicians took to social media offering words of support to those impacted by the blaze.
Tracy Gilbert, MP for Edinburgh North and Leith, announced: "I can confirm that three people were treated at the scene last night for smoke inhalation but thankful did not require hospitalisation. Can I thank the Fire Services, Police Scotland and Edinburgh Council for the response last night. I'm so glad that everyone is safe."
Chas Booth, a city councillor for Leith, said: "Very concerned to hear about this and my thoughts are with all those affected. I'm in touch with council officers about this and I understand staff are in the building this morning helping residents affected."
A concerned local shared: "I wonder how it started and where. Very sad for the people affected. I've never heard this before in 50 years living in Leith."
One resident of Cables Wynd House who captured the shocking footage told Edinburgh Live: "It was bad. I was a scared if someone was in the flat and I thought we were going to have to leave the building in case it started spreading more.
"It was like something exploded. I feel bad for the people [who live there], they have lost all their stuff in the house fire."
The message on the Cables Wynd House Facebook page read: "So tonight has been a really scary experience of a fire in the building, a fast evacuation and worries of lives of those anywhere near those flames.

"This is a time for all of us to pull together & support each other. In kindness, respect & neighbourly solidarity.
"We are waiting for answers but right now we're focusing on our neighbours who've all been through such a scary experience and those whose homes were damaged in the flats."
A spokesperson from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted to a fire at Cables Wynd House, known locally as the 'banana flats' at 10.49pm on June 6.
"We dispatched nine appliances and departed just after 7.00am on June 7. There are no casualties that we were made aware of."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 11pm on Friday, 6 June 2025, police were advised by SFRS of a fire at a flat in Cables Wynd House, Edinburgh.
"The flat was empty at the time. No one required to be taken to hospital. All residents, bar two households, have been allowed to return to the building. Enquiries into the cause of the fire, which at this time is not being treated as suspicious, are ongoing."
Cables Wynd House was made famous by its appearance in the 1996 film Trainspotting. Built in the 1960s, it has since become an Edinburgh landmark. In 2017 it was given top listing by Historic Environment Scotland - the same level as Edinburgh Castle.

More info A beloved Edinburgh postal worker has stepped down from his role after more than two decades of delivering mail due to an "agonising" injury. Marc Mclellan, 46, worked for Royal Mile for 25 years and was on the Portobello beat for around five years. Locals shared heartfelt farewells with the much-loved postie as he broke the news that he was leaving the job. Marc covered a wide swathe of Portobello on his route and built bonds with the community over the years. He delivered mail to homes and businesses on and around Portobello High Street, along the Promenade, and up the Esplanade. However, an injury cropped up several years ago which slowly made his work unbearable. Marc told Edinburgh Live: "I started to have pains in my achilles and calves around 2021 and it slowly over the years grew in more and more agony and became so debilitating that after many doctors visits, physio visits and specialists it was decided that due to my work load and my injuries I couldn't carry on sadly." (Image: Supplied) Although he was gutted to leave the role, Marc fondly recalled his many years on the beat, spending time outside and forming bonds with the Portobello community. He added: "I loved being outdoors and delivering to all my wonderful customers over the years. I loved to interact with them all from little ones waving to me at windows to helping elderly ladies cross the road. "I've done it all on my route, as well as delivering the mail! Marc added: "I'll miss everything. I truly loved my job as a postie, I loved the outdoors, meeting people, sharing stories daily and just general interaction with my customers. "I've formed so many close bonds with so many people on my duty in Portobello it will be so sad when it finally hits home that it's over."

Incredible drone footage shows moment dog is found after vanishing during walk Roxie ran away when they encountered a couple with two large dogs, and was found by a drone pilot in the early hours of the morning Dramatic Drone Footage Of Lost Dog Scampering Across Dunes As Rescuers Close In A Welsh community was on tenterhooks when a beloved dog went missing on a seaside stroll. Five-year-old Roxie, the Jack Tzu vanished from view amongst dunes and despite hours searching, she remained missing. Owners Liz Richardson and her husband John were joined by local volunteers as the Anglesey online community waited hours for updates. By sheer chance, in the dead of night, Roxie's silhouette was caught on a drone camera equipped with thermal imaging showing her dashing through the Aberffraw's dunes. ‌ The nail-biting footage shows rabbits darting while Roxie runs through the dunes, all captured by drone operator Dafydd Edwards from Holyhead. ‌ Thanks to the footage she was safely retrieved and an overwhelmed Roxie was finally reunited with Liz. Even when I heard Roxie had been found, I didn't dare believe it until I saw her. Then I couldn't stop hugging everyone, I was so grateful." The ordeal unfolded on Monday afternoon (June 16) as mother-in-law Margaret ventured out with Roxie and Lola, a Shih Tzu, for their routine walk. Setting off from Rhostrehwfa near Llangefni, Margaret opted for the stunning dune scenery of Aberffraw on the west coast of Anglesey, a favourite amongst dog walkers for its vast dunes leading up to the magnificent Traeth Mawr beach, reports North Wales Live. Article continues below However, when Margaret came across a couple with two large and friendly dogs, Roxie became scared. Roxie takes it easy back home in Rhostrehwfa after a hard day chasing rabbits (Image: Liz Richardson ) Liz, 52 said: "In a flash, she was gone. Poor Margaret spent an hour searching for her in a state of panic." ‌ Having no other option, Margaret rang home. Liz and John immediately got into their car to make the first of three trips to the dunes. After two hours they returned home to charge their phones so they could post an appeal on Facebook. "It set off a series of events that eventually led to Roxie being found," said Liz. "I still can't believe how many people wanted to help - we live in such a wonderful place here." ‌ Following advice from online followers, Liz and John went back to leave food and clothes with familiar scents in the area, hoping Roxie would be lured to safety. One spot was where she was last seen, another was near a cottage following a reported sighting. Joining the search was local man Richard Mulcahey. "He stayed with us the whole day," said Liz. "We didn't get home until 1.30am the next morning. He was incredible – I contacted him afterwards to say he was my hero!". ‌ Unbeknownst to Liz and John, discussions were taking place online and one of these led to Dafydd Edwards, a volunteer drone pilot with rescue charity Drone SAR For Lost Dogs (DSFLG) UK. With over 3,500 pilots and 3,000 ground search volunteers, it helps reunite around 750 dogs each year. With daylight dwindling, architectural designer Dafydd took to the skies over Aberffraw with his DJI Mavic 3T drone, equipped with a thermal camera that was picking up numerous heat signatures. He said: "I came across rabbits by the dozen and a darting fox, sending our hearts racing as we hoped we might be closing in on Roxie. ‌ "Flying at night with a thermal camera is much easier than searching during the day, when there are lots of people around and it's harder to differentiate objects." After draining two batteries, their initial hope began to wane. The wind had picked up, compelling Dafydd to fly the drone at a mere 10-15 metres. "The drone was on the edge of its capability," he admitted. ‌ Then, half an hour after returning to Rhostrehwfa, Liz received an exhilarating call. "Dafydd said he'd spotted her!" she said. "So we bombed out again." Dafydd managed to identify one slightly larger heat signature and upon zooming in, it seemed to be a dog. He said: "It was pure luck. I kept tracking the dog but as soon as Liz and John arrived, the battery ran out again and I needed to make another change. I was worried I'd lost Roxie but luckily she was still in the same spot when the drone went back up." John and Richard were led to Roxie's hiding spot, with some invaluable advice from social media users. "We had a lot of advice from Facebook users, especially Gillian Metcalf," Liz expressed. ‌ "We were advised not to all shout Roxie's name in case she took fright. When John was closing in, he was calling out gently for Lola instead - the idea was that Roxie would be curious and feel she was missing out on something. It seemed to work - she was quickly back on a lead." Liz could barely contain her gratitude upon their reunion saying: "I could scarcely believe she was back and unharmed, I couldn't stop thanking everyone. I've been overwhelmed by everyone's kindness. In this day and age, you think there aren't many people willing to help for nothing, but this shows that's not true. I count myself so lucky to live here." Dafydd, frequently called upon to seek out lost pups said: "It's always very rewarding when you make a successful rescue." Article continues below In appreciation, Liz made a gesture of thanks to the Dog Search and Find group, contributing to DSFLG UK and registering herself as a volunteer searcher. As a token of appreciation and practical measure, she's also being gifted a dog tracker to prevent future escapades into rabbit-filled meadows with Roxie.
