Controversial US billionaire buys stake in Crystal Palace to stave off threat of European expulsion

The US billionaire Woody Johnson has bought the crucial John Textor stake in Crystal Palace, leaving the road clear for the club to play in the Europa League next season. Johnson, understood to have paid around £200 million, has bought 42.9 per cent of the club previously owned by US investor Textor. The deal was struck over the weekend and should satisfy Uefa there are no multi-club issues that could prevent Palace, the FA Cup winners, playing in Uefa competitions. It is subject to approval by the Premier League and its owners and directors' test. Clarification over Palace's eligibility to play in Europe next season is expected by Uefa soon. Johnson is a major new figure to enter the Premier League ownership world, his family controlling the famous NFL franchise the New York Jets. Johnson, 78, is viewed as a controversial figure in US sport, with the Jets facing scrutiny last year following reports of 'controversial and dysfunctional practices' under his watch. He bought the Jets in 2000, with the NFL franchise now estimated to be worth around $6.9 billion. The Jets' $1.6 billion MetLife Stadium will host next year's World Cup final. Johnson is also well-known in UK politics. The long-time Republican Party donor was appointed as US ambassador to the UK during Donald Trump's first term. His brother, Christopher, took over Jets operations during his post. The American businessman has long been interested in buying a Premier League club, having made enquiries over acquiring Chelsea in 2022. The development takes Textor out of the picture, leaving chairman Steve Parish, original US investors Josh Harris and David Blitzer, to run the club with Johnson as a supportive partner. Palace faced the threat of expulsion from the Europa League having been caught in the web of multi-club ownership because of an administrative error. Textor had neglected to place his shares in Ligue 1 Lyon in a blind trust by the early March deadline in order to comply with Uefa rules on multi-club ownership. Palace's three other owners have made their case to Uefa this month that there was no multi-club issue - they shared no recruitment, or sporting infrastructure with Lyon or indeed any other club in Textor's Eagle Football group.

Aussie F1 star Daniel Ricciardo's fans turn on him over social media post: 'Surely you don't need money that badly'

Daniel Ricciardo has come under fire from fans after launching a tongue-in-cheek promotion with an Australian betting app. The recently retired Formula One star posted a video to social media announcing a new 'tailgate' business. What looked like a light-hearted comeback quickly turned sour when followers discovered it was part of a gambling promotion. In the video posted to X, Ricciardo is shown lounging in a deck chair, declaring, 'Retirement ain't what it's cracked up to be.' He jokes about being bored with hitting golf balls and looking for a 'real passion project'. 'I love my football and I love a good time. Now it's time for me to do both,' he said. Ricciardo then announces the launch of his own tailgate business in partnership with Dabble. The video ends with Ricciardo encouraging fans to 'get the party started' by visiting But the website doesn't promote a business venture from Ricciardo at all. Instead, it's a global competition to win the Ultimate Texas Tailgate experience. The prize includes flights, accommodation, and tickets to NFL matches – with Ricciardo as host. While the video was clearly intended as satire, not everyone found it amusing, with many fans left frustrated by Ricciardo's decision to align with a gambling company. 'Don't promote something that destroys lives, do something positive. Please,' one follower wrote. Another commented, 'We're truly going to look back at these gambling ads someday in the way that we look back at cigarette ads now.' One follower simply wrote, 'Money badger strikes again,' a play on Ricciardo's old nickname, the Honey Badger. One fan wrote, 'Surely you don't need the money that badly,' while others called the move disappointing 'What a shame. You're shilling for a gambling company. JFC. Surely you don't need the money that badly,' said another. Critics were particularly upset because Dabble is a social betting platform. It allows users to place bets, follow others, and share tips in a community-driven feed. While popular with younger audiences, the platform's marketing tactics have raised questions. Gambling reform advocates argue such content normalises wagering through humour and celebrity endorsement. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australians lose roughly $25billion each year to legal gambling. Other estimates place total losses closer to $31.5billion, making Australia's gambling losses the highest per capita in the world. 'Seriously mate? Money that tight is it? So bloody disappointing,' another angry fan posted. The criticism comes just months after Ricciardo quietly stepped away from fulltime Formula One racing. He made his F1 debut in 2011 and soon established himself as one of the sport's most exciting drivers. A move to Toro Rosso in 2012 showed his promise, but it was his 2014 switch to Red Bull Racing that launched his career into the spotlight. Ricciardo won three Grands Prix in his debut season at Red Bull, finishing third in the world championship. Known for his daring overtakes and wide smile, he added wins in Malaysia (2016), Azerbaijan (2017), and Monaco (2018). In 2019, he left for Renault, aiming to rebuild a struggling team. While wins proved elusive, he secured two podiums in 2020 and earned respect as a leader. He joined McLaren in 2021 and delivered their first win in nearly a decade at Monza. But inconsistent form in 2022 led to his exit. After a reserve role with Red Bull in 2023, Ricciardo returned mid-season with AlphaTauri. The results didn't improve, and he quietly retired from full-time racing in 2025.

5 biggest things that will go right in the NFL in 2025: QBs aplenty

As is often the case with the NFL, there's a lot, including the league doing what it does best: make a lot of money. 5. Quarterbacking No, we're not in the stratospheric time of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Those two were so historic, they form their own era. So, it's not that big, but this moment in NFL quarterback time is still really impressive. The depth of the great players at the position is near the best we've ever seen, if not at the tippy of that top. Start with Patrick Mahomes. Go to Lamar Jackson. Then Josh Allen. Throw in Joe Burrow. Look at those names. That first one will go into the Hall of Fame. The next one is well on his way. The other two aren't far behind. We haven't even talked about Jalen Hurts yet. There's Jayden Daniels from Washington and watch out for nuclear growth from Denver's Bo Nix. And I have shown massive disrespect to players like Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford by mentioning them so low. But you get the point. We saw some great quarterback play last year and could see even better in 2025. 4. Ratings There was a small dip in the ratings last season but who are we kidding. The NFL remains the biggest, baddest monster on the television block. It will likely be that way for years, if not decades. We are all NFL addicts. 3. The Eagles I haven't felt this confident (barring injury) about a team's chances of repeating as Super Bowl champions (barring injury) since Jimmy Johnson's Dallas Cowboys won their first one. So (barring injury) I love the Eagles' chances. Why? The main reason is that Hurts is a vastly underrated player. Not just quarterback. Player. Because Hurts has such a low-key demeanor (and many in the media demand their quarterbacks to be boisterous) he gets shorted. Also, the "tush push" is returning. It will still be unstoppable, maybe like the Eagles. 2. Sean Payton This will sound crazy (not the first time) but it wouldn't stun me if the Broncos made a serious Super Bowl run in 2025. Payton has his Drew Brees in Nix and when Payton has that, he is extremely formidable. Told you this was crazy (not the second time, either). But the Broncos have many of the elements to make such a push. Most of all, they have Payton. 1. The 18-game season Wait, there is no 18-game season in 2025, you goober. No, but there's a steady march to one, and this season will further push the league towards that goal. This season will again see tons of ratings and good play on the field. We'll see it all and the desire for the NF$ to make even more cash will grow. The best way for the league to do that is go to 18 games. So that talk will continue.
