Two Free State officers in court in connection with guesthouse rape

News2413-06-2025

Two Free State police officers appeared in the Kroonstad Magistrate's Court in connection with a rape that was reported at a guesthouse.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said the officers, both 25, were arrested after the alleged rape at the guesthouse in Kroonstad on 8 June.
IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said the two officers allegedly met two women, both aged 21, at a nightclub where they had been drinking.
'They later agreed to go together to the guesthouse. One police officer allegedly raped one of the women, and a case was opened,' Shuping said.
The officers face charges of rape and conspiracy to rape.
Shuping said one of the officers was provisionally released pending further investigation.
Meanwhile, the case against the second officer was postponed to 19 June for a bail application.
The two officers are stationed at Bloemspruit and Heuningspruit.
Earlier this week, a 59-year-old police captain employed as a firearms trainer at the Tshwane police academy in Pretoria West was granted R8 000 bail.
The captain, who had been employed at the SA Police Service for 31 years, is facing charges of rape and sexual assault.
It is alleged that the officer allegedly raped a 20-year-old trainee and sexually assaulted a 29-year-old trainee.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the State opposed his release on bail.
'The court, however, found that it was in the best interest of justice for the accused to be released on bail with conditions,' Mahanjana said.

Breakthrough in Hawks murder: Two arrested two years after Mathipa's drive-by killing

Two suspects in the 2023 murder of Hawks officer Lieutenant Ngwako Frans Mathipa were arrested on Sunday. Mathipa, 53, was killed in a drive-by shooting on the N1 highway near Hammanskraal Toll Plaza. The officer was investigating high-profile cases, including the alleged abduction of an ISIS leader by SANDF members. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has made a breakthrough, securing arrests in the murder of one of its own nearly two years after the killing. Full details are yet to be released by the Hawks on the arrests in connection with the 2023 murder of Lieutenant Ngwako Frans Mathipa. The Hawks have confirmed that two suspects were arrested following an operation on Sunday morning. The two suspects will appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of murdering Mathipa. 'One was arrested at the OR Tambo Airport after landing, while the other was arrested at their residence. We will be releasing a detailed statement on this shortly,' said Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo on Sunday. Mathipa, who was a lead investigator in cases relating to crimes against the state, was killed in a drive-by shooting on the N1 highway near the Hammanskraal Toll Plaza in August 2023. The 53-year-old officer, who was shot in the head, lost control of his vehicle, which rolled and landed in a ditch. Mathipa was involved in several high-profile cases, including one involving a syndicate that was behind the illegal sale of electricity vouchers. According to police, the syndicate was found to have sold electricity vouchers for half price, defrauding Eskom of millions in this prepaid power scam. Four accused were ultimately found guilty on 16 451 counts of racketeering, electricity theft and theft of a credit dispensing unit. He was also involved in an investigation involving South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members. According to a City Press report at the time of his death, Mathipa was the lead investigator in the abduction of Isis leader Abdella Abadinga, who had apparently been kidnapped from the Mall of Africa in Midrand in December 2022, allegedly by members of the SANDF's Special Forces.

South African engineers freed after two years in Equatorial Guinea jail

Two South African engineers have returned home after spending more than two years in jail in Equatorial Guinea on what the UN has called "arbitrary and illegal" drugs charges. Frik Potgieter and Peter Huxham, both in their mid-50s, were arrested in February 2023 after drugs were allegedly found in their luggage. They were sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined $5m (£4m) but have been given a presidential pardon after a long campaign by their families and the South African government. Their arrest came days after luxury assets belonging to Equatorial Guinea's Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang were seized in South Africa. A yacht and two Cape Town villas belonging to Obiang, who is also the son of Equatorial Guinea's president, were impounded in execution of a court ruling. "We are overwhelmed with relief and joy. The last two years and four months have been unimaginably painful for both of our families," according to a statement released by the two men's families. They were working for the Dutch oil and gas company SBM in Equatorial Guinea when they arrested the night before they were due to return home after a five-week stint in the country. The families had called for the assistance of the South African government as well as that of the UK government, as Mr Huxham has dual nationality. "South Africa expresses its sincere gratitude to the Government of Equatorial Guinea for considering and ultimately granting this Presidential pardon, allowing Mr Huxham and Mr Potgieter to return home to their loved ones," said a post on X by South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention last year called for the pair's release, saying their detention was unlawful. Their families say the pair were arrested in retaliation for the seizure of the assets belonging to Equatorial Guinea's vice-president. The BBC has contacted Equatorial Guinea for comment. A South African official told the BBC it was for the courts to decide the fate of the yacht and villas, and the government couldn't intervene. Man charged with rape after city centre attack

A man has been charged with rape and sexual assault after an alleged attack in an alleyway in Nottingham city centre. Joseph Healey, 43 and of no fixed address, has also been charged with administering a substance with intent to overpower someone and assault on an emergency worker. Nottinghamshire Police were called to the scene in Canal Street at about 20:00 BST on Friday, with specially-trained officers supporting the victim, a 19-year-old woman. Mr Healey is expected to appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Monday . Det Sgt Helen Sanders said: "Specialist police staff continue to support the victim and she has been kept fully up to date on the course of our investigation. "A team of officers have worked quickly and efficiently over the course of the weekend to understand exactly what happened and this suspect will appear before magistrates at the earliest opportunity. "Despite this important step in our investigation we still want to speak to anyone with information. "We are aware there were a number of people walking along the canal, between the Trent Street Bridge, Loverose Bridge and the A60 London Road Bridge, around this time. "I'd urge them to get in touch without delay as they may be able to help our inquiries." Follow BBC Nottingham on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram.
