RM193,000 gone: Woman pensioner falls victim to phone scam
CHUKAI: A pensioner was poorer by RM193,000 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate.
Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said on May 25, a 63-year-old woman (victim) received a phone call from a suspect impersonating an agent from Takaful Malaysia.
He said the suspect claimed the victim had filed a false insurance claim, which could lead to her being fined and imprisoned.
'The first suspect then connected the call to another suspect who pretended to be a police officer.
'The suspect asked the victim to provide her bank card details and the security password for her savings account for verification purposes. The panicked victim complied with the suspect's instructions out of fear of being imprisoned,' he said in a statement today.
However, Mohd Razi said that on June 8, the victim was shocked to discover that her savings had been reduced by RM193,000.
On checking, the victim found that 20 money transfer transactions had been made to four unknown bank accounts between May 29 and June 8.
'Police advise the public to first verify the phone numbers used by suspects through the 'Semak Mule' online application provided by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department.
'The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code,' he added.

Meanwhile, Noor Azreyanti said the latest seizure was the sixth involving ray nets in the Kuala Kedah maritime zone so far this year. 'The use of the nets not only affects the population of stingrays, which are benthic predators, but also disrupts the overall balance of the ecosystem if left unchecked,' she said. She also called on the public to report illegal fishing activities or suspicious activities at sea via the 999 emergency line or the Kuala Kedah maritime zone operations centre at 04-7310579.

Couple held for series of housebreaking, robbery cases since January
MELAKA: Police have arrested a couple suspected of involvement in seven housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka and neighbouring states since January. Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the unemployed couple, aged 24 and 31, were arrested in Kuala Kurau, Perak, on June 4. "On May 28, police received two reports involving housebreaking and robbery in the Melaka Tengah district, linked to the couple. "Their modus operandi included targeting homestays and stealing various electrical appliances and furniture," he said in a statement today. Initial investigations found they were involved in three housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka Tengah, and four others in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Various items were seized, including electrical appliances, furniture, a gold bracelet, two cars, five pawnshop receipts, and five mobile phones. The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and Section 392 for robbery. In a separate development, Christopher said a clothing dealer was arrested for allegedly firing a shot from an air pistol at Jalan Johor, Semabok, on June 8. "Following intelligence gathering and a public tip-off, the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Puchong, Selangor, on June 17. Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief.
