Helena Christensen Breaks Down Her Six-Minute 'Sexy Island Makeup Look'
Helena Christensen is diligent at dodging UV rays. 'I am trying to be very disciplined about protecting my skin, because I'm a very outdoorsy person,' she says while walking Vogue through her beauty secrets from a balmy bathroom in the Bahamas. That said, the Danish-born model confesses: 'I like when your skin looks like it's been kissed by the sun.' And in the six minutes to follow, she uses her go-to products to create a makeup look that channels the 'exotic, beach' vibe she's after—no sunbathing required. For her first order of business, the Strangelove creative director pats Westman Atelier's Sun Tone Bronzing Drops onto her sunscreen-clad cheeks. 'You just need so little to give you that glow,' she says. And though she's already giving off tropical vibes, the 56-year-old decides to spend five more minutes amping up her out-of-office radiance. After adding a pop of creamy pink color to her cheeks with Goop's Colorglow Glow Balm, Christensen decks her eyes with a subtle wash of sparkling color, topping Merit's Flush Balm Cream Blush with shimmering shadow from Hourglass. 'I love putting something on my eyelids that just enhances the natural shadow that you already have,' she says. But after using a fan to set her makeup in the Bahamas heat, Christensen shares where her loyalty to barely-there makeup ends. Capping off her look with a hibiscus-red lipstick from Dries Van Noten, she confesses: 'I like natural lips, but I love red lips… The no-makeup-makeup look just fell apart.' The model takes a moment to fluff up her ocean-breeze-ruffled hair and dab on some Strangelove perfume oil, then calls it a wrap. 'This is my sexy island look,' she says, smiling as she heads back to the beach. Shop Helena Christensen's routine, below. The Best Nail Shape for Mature Hands, According to a Celebrity Manicurist
The Best Nail Shape for Mature Hands, According to a Celebrity Manicurist originally appeared on Parade. There's no rules when it comes to manicures—do what is fun, flattering, exciting and joyful for you! But our nails do age with us, so we need to take extra care to keep them healthy as we get older. Our nails may grow more slowly, or become dull and brittle. So, we caught up with celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec, who has worked with Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain and Connie Britton, to discuss nail health, nail trends and aging. "Our skin, hair and nails all become more dehydrated with age, so drinking lots of water with electrolytes helps keep the nails flexible," Kandalec tells Parade. "Nails are supposed to be flexible. That way they bend, not break!" As we age, if our nails become brittle, she suggests "keeping a nail coating on them like a structured manicure or even just gel polish like CND Shellac, really helps to keep them intact and prevent them from peeling and splitting," she says. This would also cover opaque or yellowing nails, which can happen with age. Kandalec likes shorter nails for mature women. "I love a shorter soft square or almond shape," she says. And this summer, "a sheer white chrome mani is trending for all ages! It's beautiful and reflects just enough so that it's not too bold," she says. "Also I love putting a superfine glitter top coat over a blush pink mani, I'm wearing that on my hands now! It gives just a subtle sparkle that you really can only see close up." Other favorite current trends for Kandalec are "chrome nails, 3D flowers, micro french, and glitter french," she says. Related: 50 Best Nail Ideas for Women Over 50 Press-ons are also trending, "for good reason," Kandalec says. "They're fast and if you want just a little length and strength from home, Kiss offers some really simple to fun designs." She recommends both the no-glue options and the traditional press-ons. But never ever "peel your press-ons off, or remove them with a tool before giving them enough time to properly soak," Kandalec says. The absolute minimum is 15 minutes. Related: We also asked Kandalec about the latest trends in pedicures. "I have been seeing a ton of bare toes! Either super sheer toes, or something like Bubble Bath for a whisper of done-ness. Personally I'm wearing 2 coats of Bubble Bath with a super skinny gold glitter french," she says. "Bright neons on coral and hot pink will always be fun in the summer too." Is It Worth It: Nordstrom Beauty Haven Londontown Nail Bar
Courtesy of Nordstrom In today's American economy, where tariffs are rising, inflation is relentless, and a carton of eggs costs $12—we're all rechecking our budgets, reevaluating our priorities, and rethinking every swipe of the card. The non-negotiables stick around: rent, streaming subscriptions, and that one sweet treat at the grocery store. But the negotiables? That's where the cuts start, and beauty and wellness are often the first to go. In a world where everything feels more expensive and our wallets a little lighter, the question lingers: Is it worth it? Beauty services are often seen as luxuries, and some treatments? Ultra-luxuries. Getting your nails done, a fresh blowout, a facial, these all add up by the end of the month. So before you tack on another expense for something you might regret, Is It Worth It is your guide. This series puts beauty and wellness services to the test vetting and reviewing them to see if, in a world of $12 eggs and surprise charges just for leaving the house, they're actually worth it because beauty doesn't always have to mean pocket pain. Nordstrom Beauty Haven NYC is a one-stop destination for all things beauty, from hair to nails and even facial workouts. It feels like a grown-up version of a childhood fantasy: a place where you can get a full makeover in a single day, Princess Diaries-style. One standout is the Londontown nail bar, which offers clean, expertly formulated polishes made with supercharged natural ingredients. Translation? Nontoxic nail color and FDA-approved gels that actually hold up. Although it's not tucked into the middle of the massive Nordstrom store—it actually has its own dedicated floor—there's still a sense of casual chaos at Beauty Haven. What's missing is the calm, spa-like atmosphere you'd expect from a traditional nail salon. There's no champagne service, no soothing music, no friendly back-and-forth with your nail tech about who you're dating. The goal here is efficiency: get in, get out, and move on. Courtesy of Londontown Londontown is a women-owned, family-run business based in the U.S., known for its forward-thinking clean formulas and naturally derived ingredients. Their menu includes six manicure options, ranging from a bare-nail refresh to a Gel Luxe experience, with prices starting at $30 and topping out at $70. Pedicure services follow a similar structure, beginning at $35 for no color and going up to $70 for the gel luxe option. The upgrades are subtle—the 'luxe experience' includes a hand or foot massage and a mask, but don't expect anything too extravagant. Yes: As a returning client of the Gel Experience (though I missed out on the luxe add-ons due to a time crunch), I can vouch for the polish: it's thick, glossy, and has the kind of flawless finish that rivals a press-on set. Even better, it lasts for a month or more, if you're diligent with upkeep. Compared to many local NYC nail spots, where gel manicures can run up to $90 in Midtown Manhattan, Londontown's $60 service in just 75 minutes (versus the standard two hours) feels like a steal. And if you're someone who leans toward clean, natural ingredients, this is a standout option, especially in a beauty category that often comes with a side of chemical anxiety. The only critique is they could offer a larger variety of colors and nail services, especially if you're looking for add-ons like ever-trendy chrome, designs, or nail extensions, they don't offer that.
