British voters have spoken on Gaza. How will leaders respond?

Middle East Eye5 hours ago

For more than 20 months, we have watched the devastation in Gaza unfold: entire neighbourhoods razed, families buried beneath the rubble, the healthcare system obliterated.
Even the most basic rights to safety, clean water and food are being systematically denied.
Despite mounting and credible evidence that Israel's actions in Gaza meet the definition of genocide under international law, many western leaders have equivocated, delayed or outright denied the scale of the atrocities.
But the British public is not being fooled.
New polling commissioned by Action For Humanity, in partnership with the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians and conducted by YouGov, shows that the public is far ahead of the political establishment.

A majority of respondents - 55 percent - now oppose Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Among them, a striking 82 percent say Israel's actions constitute genocide.
That means nearly half of all UK adults - 45 percent - view Israel's actions in Gaza as genocidal.
This is not a fringe opinion. It reflects the reality on the ground - a reality that, despite relentless efforts to spread doubt, has become increasingly difficult to deny.
From the targeting of civilians, journalists and humanitarian workers to the destruction of infrastructure essential to life, the evidence has grown steadily. So, too, has public awareness.
Media silence
While many mainstream outlets have downplayed or obscured the scale of atrocities being committed in Gaza, social media - and courageous platforms like Middle East Eye - have provided an unflinching view of what is happening. People cannot unsee what they have seen.
Even securing coverage in mainstream media for these shocking polling results, conducted by a highly reputable organisation like YouGov, has proven difficult.
The message could not be clearer: the British public believes in international law. They believe in accountability, and they want action
Upon closer examination of the data, the picture becomes even clearer. Nearly two-thirds of Britons - 65 percent - believe the UK must enforce the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to visit the country. Among Labour voters, the figure rises to 78 percent.
The message could not be clearer: the British public believes in international law. The people believe in accountability. And they want action.
While the ICC has taken the first steps towards justice, doing what many western governments have refused to do, the UK government has so far failed to match this legal progress with political will.

As our polling shows, voters - particularly those who helped deliver Labour a landslide victory just weeks ago - are demanding a meaningful change in approach.
This is not only about justice for Gaza. It is about what kind of country Britain wants to be. Will we uphold our commitments to international law, or retreat behind the shield of diplomatic convenience?
A turning tide
The polling also shows strong public support for meaningful political solutions.
Among Labour voters, 43 percent support the immediate recognition of Palestine as an independent state - with only 2 percent opposed.
More than half - 56 percent - support the creation of a humanitarian visa scheme for Palestinians from Gaza, a 'Homes for Gaza' initiative modelled on the one introduced for Ukrainian refugees.
Why the UK refuses to do the one thing that could stop Israel's 'intolerable' war on Gaza Read More »
The time for mealy-mouthed statements and diplomatic hedging has long passed.
When atrocities reach the threshold of genocide, silence is complicity - and the public understands this. The polling shows that Labour's position on Gaza is out of step with its own supporters.
The cost of inaction is not just moral - it is political. Leaders who continue to ignore the will of the people on Gaza risk abandoning their moral responsibility and alienating their voters.
While this may seem a cynical lens through which to view such suffering, it is difficult not to feel cynical when faced with the ongoing inaction of world leaders in the face of deliberate, systematic brutality.
This is not just a British phenomenon. In Canada, recent polling suggests that nearly half the public believes Israel's actions in Gaza amount to genocide.
It is safe to say that the tide is turning - across the West and globally.
As an organisation working on the front lines in Gaza and other conflict zones, we have seen firsthand the human cost of global impunity. But we have also seen the power of solidarity - of justice pursued, and of public opinion transformed into policy.
Western governments' failure to recognise the scale of the crimes being inflicted on Gaza places them not only on the wrong side of history, but on the wrong side of the present.

Israel-Iran conflict: B-2 bombers, bunker-busters; what to know about US' most advanced weapons

The US Air Force's B-2 Spirit stealth bomber represents one of America's most advanced strategic weapons platforms, capable of entering sophisticated air defences and delivering precision strikes against hardened targets such as Iran's buried network of nuclear research facilities. The US military is ready to carry out any decision that President Donald Trump may make on Iran, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday, adding that Tehran should have heeded the President's calls for it to make a deal on its nuclear programme prior to the start of Israel's strikes on Friday. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejected Trump's demand for unconditional surrender on Wednesday, and the US President said his patience had run out, though he gave no clue as to what his next step would be. B-2 Spirit specifications The US B-2 costs about $2.1 billion each, making it the most expensive military aircraft ever built. Made by Northrop Grumman the bomber with its cutting-edge stealth technology, began its production run in the late 1980s but was curbed by the fall of the Soviet Union. Only 21 were made after the Pentagon's planned acquisition programme was truncated. The bomber's range of over 6,000 nautical miles without refueling enables global strike capabilities from continental US bases. With aerial refueling, the B-2 can reach virtually any target worldwide, as demonstrated in missions from Missouri to Afghanistan and Libya. Its payload capacity of more than 40,000 pounds allows the aircraft to carry a diverse array of conventional and nuclear weapons. The bomber's internal weapons bays are specifically designed to maintain stealth characteristics while accommodating large ordnance loads which could include two GBU-57A/B MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator), a 30,000-pound precision-guided "bunker buster" bomb. The two-pilot crew configuration reduces personnel requirements while maintaining operational effectiveness through advanced automation systems. The B-2's stealth technology incorporates radar-absorbing materials and angular design features that minimise detection by enemy air defence systems. Its radar cross-section is reportedly comparable to that of a small bird, making it nearly invisible to conventional radar. Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) The 30,000-pound MOP represents the largest conventional bomb in the U.S. arsenal, specifically engineered to defeat hardened underground bunkers. Its massive size requires the B-2 to carry only one or two MOPs per mission, but provides unmatched bunker-penetration capability. The weapon's 20.5-foot length and GPS-guided precision targeting system enable accurate strikes against specific underground facilities. Its penetration capability of over 200 feet through hardened concrete makes it effective against the world's most protected underground installations. Conventional payloads Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) provide the B-2 with precision conventional strike capability against fixed targets. These GPS-guided weapons can be deployed in large numbers, with the bomber capable of simultaneously engaging multiple targets with high accuracy. Joint Standoff Weapons (JSOW) extend the aircraft's engagement range while maintaining stealth characteristics during approach. These glide bombs allow the B-2 to strike targets from outside heavily defended airspace perimeters. Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM) offer long-range precision strike capability with their own stealth features. The extended-range JASSM-ER variant provides strike options against targets over 500 miles (805 km) away. Nuclear payload capabilities The B-2 Spirit serves as a key component of America's nuclear triad, capable of delivering strategic nuclear weapons with stealth and precision. The aircraft can carry up to 16 B83 nuclear bombs.

Yemen's Houthis vow to strike US ships if America joins Israel's war on Iran

Yemen's Houthi rebels vowed on Saturday to resume attacks on US ships if American forces join Israel's war on Iran. "In the event that the Americans are involved in the attack and aggression against Iran alongside the Israeli enemy, the armed forces will target their ships and warships in the Red Sea," the Houthis said in a statement. Last week, Yemeni security sources told The National that the rebels are considering resuming strikes on US targets in the Middle East and intensifying attacks on Israel in support of Iran. US President Donald Trump said last month the Iran-backed Houthis 'capitulated' and that America would stop strikes on the rebels after they agreed to cease attacking ships in the Red Sea. The Houthis are part of the so-called Axis of Resistance, an Iran-led network that includes Hamas in Palestine, Hezbollah in Lebanon and armed groups in Iraq, whose aim is to deter Israel from conducting military action and countering its influence in the region. Many of the groups have fought against Iran's enemies in their respective countries. The groups launched attacks on Israel as part of a support campaign for Hamas and the Palestinian people after the Gaza war broke out on October 7, 2023. But months of fighting with Israel, which holds clear military dominance, have eroded the operational capacity of the axis considerably. Hezbollah was once considered Iran's first line of defence against Israeli attacks, but strikes against the group last year killed its political and military leaders and largely destroyed its arsenal. Lebanese officials have urged Hezbollah not to respond to Israeli attacks on Iran. In Iraq, sources close to the government told The National this week that some of the most prominent militant groups have made it known that any US military intervention would trigger a response.
