Lionel Messi in India — V. Abdurahiman says Argentina will visit Kerala in late 2025
Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman on Saturday asserted that Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, will visit the state as announced by the government earlier, and that the sponsor has paid the match fee for the event.
He said the World Cup winner is likely to come in October or November this year, and they would be treated as state guests. The government would meet their security, accommodation and other facilities.
The news would come as a fresh ray of hope for football fans in one of India's surviving football hubs. Earlier, several media reports had said that Argentina's scheduled visit was cancelled.
Both Abdurahiman and the sponsor, Reporter Broadcasting Company, had strongly rejected the claims. The Minister put a brief Facebook post, saying that 'Messi will come', on Friday.
The 2025 FIFA international calendar allows Argentina to play 10 matches, with four of them already played as part of the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
Argentina's international windows in 2025:
March 17-25 – 2 matches – Completed
June 2-10 – 2 matches – Completed
September 1-9 – 2 matches – FIFA World Cup qualifiers scheduled
October 6-14 – 2 matches – Schedule yet to be decided
November 10-18 – 2 matches – Schedule yet to be decided
The Albiceleste plays Venezuela on September 9 and Ecuador five days later in the CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They currently top the qualification group and has already qualified for the next World Cup.
This leaves the next two windows open for their potential visit to India. However, their opponents are yet to be decided.
Argentina camp yet to confirm
Speaking to the media on Saturday, Abdurahiman confirmed that the sponsor's delay in paying the match fee had now been resolved
'The sponsor has paid the amount now. There are no other obstacles in this regard. As per the FIFA window, October-November is the time allotted for the world teams to take part in such events. So, the same time is likely to be allotted for us also,' he said.
As per the contract between the sponsor and the Argentina Football Association (AFA), the team management would reach the state after the payment of the match fee, and they would announce the date and other details through a joint statement, he said.
While replying to a question, Abdurahiman said it was the sponsor who informed the government about the payment of the match fee, and they are yet to get an update from the Argentina team management in this regard.
'The sponsors said they had settled the contract amount to be paid before the match. The government has no connection with any financial dealings in this regard. The contract is between the sponsor and the team management,' he said.
Will India play Argentina?
A match between India and Argentina is extremely unlikely for two primary reasons.
Firstly, a match between Argentina, the top-ranked team in the world, and India, ranked 126th, will barely contribute to Elo rankings points for the visitors, with each match contributing 10 per cent to the team's ranking this year.
Secondly, Argentina will defend the FIFA World Cup trophy in seven to eight months, depending on which window it travels to India. And that gives it a limited time to prepare. India, of all, would be an unlikely opponent to serve as a touchstone for Lionel Scaloni's men.
Where will the match be played?
If Argentina arrives, is likely to play at the Greenfield Stadium in Kerala's capital, Thiruvananthapuram.
It is a multipurpose venue used for cricket as well as football. It hosted the 2015 SAFF Championship final and can accommodate 55,000 people, complying with FIFA's standards of a minimum of 40,000 capacity.
Has Messi played in India before?
Yes, Messi last played in India in September 2011, when Argentina faced Venezuela in a friendly at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium. Argentina won 1-0 in front of a packed crowd.

Former England men's cricket team captain Nasser Hussain has reserved big praise for Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. According to Hussain, who has donned the hat of an expert and commentator after retirement from professional cricket, Bumrah is so good that if he had faced him then, he would have lost his wicket 10 times out of 10 against him. 'I would have had an absolute nightmare. Anyone that created that angle like he does would get me out for fun. He would get me out 10 times out of 10 in a five-match series. He is just brilliant, and I wasn't," Nasser said in a video shared by Sky Sports Cricket when asked, 'How would Nasser Hussain play Jasprit Bumrah?" — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) June 22, 2025 Nasser was one of the greatest English batters of all time. The Chennai-born cricketer played 96 Tests and 88 ODIs for Three Lions from October 1989 to May 2004 and scored over 8000 runs. He also served as England's captain in both the Test and ODI formats of the game. 'It won't be easy': Sourav Ganguly lays out path for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play in 2027 ODI World Cup
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's Test retirements have sparked debate over their 2027 ODI World Cup hopes. Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes it won't be easy for the legends and outlined what they must do to stay in contention. read more Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma shocked the world recently by announcing their retirements from Test cricket. They had already stepped down from T20 cricket last year after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. Their recent decisions to retire from red-ball cricket have raised a big question around their availability to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Both Kohli and Rohit are modern-day legends, and fans would love to see them lift the ODI World Cup trophy before they say goodbye to international cricket. The 2027 Cricket World Cup is still more than two years away and by then, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit will turn 40. There are concerns regarding their fitness and match-readiness at that age. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, since they won't be playing Tests and T20s anymore, some believe that they can now fully focus on ODIs and prepare themselves just for the 50-over format. That could actually work in their favour, as they will have fewer matches to worry about and can manage their bodies better. Ganguly on Kohli-Rohit's ODI future But former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has a different view. Ganguly believes that if Kohli and Rohit are serious about playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, they will have to stay active in the format for the next two years. 'It won't be easy. 15 games a year. I've got no advice. I think they know the game as much as I do. And they will take a call. But all of us must understand that just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game,' Ganguly told PTI in an interview. India have at least 27 ODI matches scheduled between now and the next World Cup. Ganguly feels that Kohli and Rohit must stay committed to playing most, if not all, of these matches if they really want to be part of the World Cup squad. Both Rohit and Kohli have already had legendary careers. They recently won the ICC Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup. They qualified for the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup without losing a single game, but lost to Australia in the summit clash. Note, Rohit is still the captain of the Indian ODI team. Paul Pogba Eyeing Return To Football With This Club: 'Matter Of Time'
Last Updated: Paul Pogba, aiming to resume his career after a doping ban, is in talks with Monaco ffor a potential return to footballl. Former France midfielder Paul Pogba, aiming to resume his career after a doping ban, revealed on French television on Sunday that he is 'talking" with a club, which sources close to him identified as Monaco. The 32-year-old also mentioned that he had reconnected with his brother Mathias, who was sentenced to a year in prison last December for his involvement in a plot to extort 13 million euros ($15 million) from the 2018 World Cup winner. Pogba, who previously played for Manchester United and Juventus, hopes to leave behind three tumultuous years. Pogba endured frequent injuries and inconsistent form, leading to his departure from United in 2022. He returned to Juventus for a second stint, where his issues persisted. In August 2023, he failed a drugs test after a game in Italy and received a four-year doping ban, later reduced to 18 months on appeal. The ban ended in March. 'It was very, very hard," Pogba stated. He confirmed he was in discussions with a club, which multiple sources identified as Ligue 1 Monaco. Pogba expressed his determination 'to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready; it's just a matter of time." The extortion case involving six men connected to Paul Pogba shocked France, as the perpetrators included three childhood friends and his own brother. The other five defendants were convicted of extortion, kidnapping, and detention, as well as participation in a criminal association, receiving sentences of up to eight years in prison. All six were also fined. Paul Pogba mentioned he was in contact with Mathias, who is allowed to serve his sentence wearing an electronic bracelet instead of being behind bars. 'We are in contact. We've spoken, among ourselves, with the family," Paul Pogba shared. 'It's a blood bond. There was a scar, of course. We're moving forward. Only time can give us answers." 'All we want is to always be united as a family. That's the most important thing. It's hard. Of course, it's very hard; I'm not going to lie. I was hurt. It's not the same as before, but we're in touch," he added. Paul Pogba was held at gunpoint in 2022 by two hooded men who demanded money. He revealed on Sunday that he was initially willing to pay but 'afterwards, I cracked," deciding 'to speak out, even if it meant dying" and refusing 'to throw away my money like that." Pogba said the ban and the court case had changed him. 'I learned a lot during this period," Pogba noted. 'I did a lot of cleaning around myself too. I am also much closer to my family, my children."
