‘Ne Zha 2' review: A spectacular, dazzling feat of animation
In 2019, the animated fantasy adventure Ne Zha captivated China – and the world. Jiaozi's debut feature was one of China's biggest hits and one of the world's most successful non-English productions. The second part, released in China on January 29, has already surpassed its predecessor at the box office.
Ne Zha 2 is out in India in its original Mandarin with English subtitles. The sequel is a thrilling, propulsive epic saga of filial duty, sacrifice and collaboration against a common enemy, presented through some of the most gobsmacking visuals ever seen in animated films.
The franchise is loosely based on the 16th-century novel Investiture of the Gods. Ne Zha has already inspired a slew of Chinese productions, including the animated Nezha Conquers the Dragon King (1979).
The first movie was the origin story of Ne Zha, who is the result of a divine boon. A celestial pearl is split into two elements, the Spirit Pearl and the Demon Orb, to contain its energies. According to a prophecy, the Spirit Pearl will be born as the child of the warrior Li Jing and his wife Yin.
The Spirit Pearl's bumbling guardian Taiyi is tricked by the wizard Shen into a swap. The Spirit Pearl is born as the underwater Dragon King's son Ao Bing, while Li Jing and Yin find themselves as Ne Zha's parents.
Ne Zha lives up to his demonic reputation. The boy with dark circles under his eyes and oversized teeth is despised in his kingdom, which only pushes him towards further havoc. Ne Zha's uncontrollable anger finds an outlet, and a higher purpose, when he meets Ao Bing.
Ne Zha 2 is vastly more ambitious in every way – the number of events and characters, the scale, the backdrops, the visual effects.
The sequel sees Ne Zha and Ao Bin teaming up against the Dragon King's wrath. Even as the Dragon King wages war on Ne Zha's kingdom, Ne Zha and Ao Bin journey to the heavenly abode of the Immortal sorcerer Wuilang to seek greater powers.
Densely plotted and relentlessly paced, the 144-minute movie pauses only for potty jokes and silly humour. There is so much going on at times that it's hard to take everything in at one go.
In the first film, the fantasy elements were grounded in relatable human characters. Ne Zha was every inch the stubborn, destructive and unreasonable last-born son endlessly running circles around his family, minders and Taiyi.
In Ne Zha 2, Jiaozi dispenses with character building and pulls out all stops for a spectacular display of his virtuosity in the animation medium. The gorgeously detailed frames inspired from Chinese design and the hectic battle scenes rival, if not surpass, big-budget Hollywood productions.
Several sequences linger in memory – Wuilang's jade palace that floats above the clouds, the Dragon King's underwater lair, the motifs of fire and water represented by Ne Zha and Ao Bing, the undulating swarms of rival armies in the extended climax. One of the most poignant scenes in an otherwise action-heavy film sees Ne Zha acknowledge his love for his mother. Jiaozi's ambition is staggering in its scope but eye-watering in other ways too.

Yoga day celebration brings families together for wellness & fun in Bengaluru
The Times of India's International Day of Yoga celebration turned into a vibrant wellness fest on Saturday as families, especially women and children, came together for a morning filled with movement, mindfulness, and a whole lot of energy. What started with slow stretches and deep breathing soon turned into an energetic celebration of wellness. Kids were seen enjoying flexibility drills while many women participated enthusiastically in the Zumba finale. Pragya Sharma, a housewife who attended the different yoga shows, told TOI: "I used to do yoga before marriage, and I still love it. But now, with two kids, I don't get much time. That's why today's event was such a great opportunity not just for me, but for many of us at Mantri Webcity who don't usually get time for ourselves." Shradha, a college student, said, "This is the first time something like this has happened in our apartment, and I really loved it. I came alone because I'm more interested in yoga than my family is. I enjoyed the yoga session and the games; it was a fun and refreshing way to spend the morning." Adding to the festive spirit were stalls offering fresh juice and light refreshments, along with engaging fitness games hosted by Decathlon, making it a family-friendly event. Interesting outdoor activities by Decathlon and a green corner by Make My Garden for plants engaged citizens. This blend of tradition and fun truly captured the spirit of International Day of Yoga — reminding everyone that wellness can be both mindful and joyful. ‘Maar na': Shubman Gill tells Rishabh Pant to hook bouncer for six, his reply: ‘Respect karna pada tagda'
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant's stump mic chatter was as entertaining as their batting during the India vs England first Test at Headingley. In between their solid defence and attractive boundary that made England's bowling attack appear ordinary, Pant and Gill constantly chatted while standing at the striker's and the non-striker's positions. Sometimes, it was teasing each other, sometimes related to what the bowler was trying to do, and sometimes it was just pure fun. And all of that was in Hindi. India's Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill(Action Images via Reuters) They were so entertaining that they also caught the attention of legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who termed it a strategy to confuse the English fielders. Among many episodes between Gill and Pant during their mammoth 209-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Gill teasing Pant to go after Brydon Carse was perhaps the best. It happened in the first session of Day 2. The over number was 94. Carse was trying to test Pant's backfoot play by banging the ball in. In the fourth ball of that over, Carse bowled a well-directed bumper at Pant's body. The Indian keeper-batter ducked under it. As Carse was going back to his mark, Gill told Pant "maar na," which translates to "Hit ma, no." Pant generally likes to take on the short ball, but this one from Carse was a bit too short. His reply to Gill was pure gold. "Bada ball daal dia yaar. Respect karna pad gaya bohut tagdaa. (He bowled a good one, man! I had to give him a lot of respect)." Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill's remarkable 209-run partnership was the highlight of India's first innings in the opening Test against England. Resuming on 359-3, with Gill unbeaten on 127 and Pant on 65, the pair displayed a compelling mix of composure and aggression that pushed India firmly towards a commanding position before an unexpected collapse. Gill, captaining India for the first time after Rohit Sharma's retirement, played with maturity beyond his years. He brought up his highest Test score of 147 with elegant strokeplay, surpassing his previous best of 128. His innings, laced with 19 boundaries and a six, was a masterclass in timing and placement. His off-drive against Chris Woakes to reach the milestone was particularly memorable, showcasing his growing stature as a leader and batsman. At the other end, Pant unleashed his trademark attacking style. Resuming on 65, he brought up his seventh Test century—and fourth against England—in thrilling fashion, lofting Shoaib Bashir for a one-handed six. The celebration that followed, a somersault, was as energetic as his 134-run knock. His 146-ball innings featured 10 fours and four sixes and kept the scoreboard ticking briskly. Together, Gill and Pant added 209 runs in just 49 overs, steering India to 430-4 and seemingly toward a total in excess of 500. Their contrasting styles complemented each other perfectly: Gill anchored the innings with finesse while Pant injected momentum with his fearless hitting. However, the end of their partnership triggered a dramatic collapse, with India losing their final seven wickets for just 41 runs. Still, the stand between Gill and Pant stood out as a blend of flair and focus, a vital foundation in India's innings that showcased the next generation of Indian batting brilliance.
