Fuse wire helps man win case against KSEB
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) has held the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) liable for a fire that occurred at a printing press in Idukki. The KSEB was asked to pay Rs 2 lakh compensation to the owner.
The order came on an appeal petition filed by the KSEB against the Idukki district commission's order in favour of the press owner. The latter, in his petition, said that he suffered losses to the tune of Rs 8 lakh due to the fire that occurred on the night of March 4, 2015. He alleged that the cause of fire was a short circuit in the service wire. The board had neglected his repeated requests to replace the wire which was 30 years old.
The KSEB argued that the accident occurred due to a short circuit in the installation of the customer and not from the service wire. The SCDRC bench comprising its president Justice B Sudheendra Kumar, judicial member D Ajith Kumar and member K R Radhakrishnan heard the case. The commission relied on the KSEB's site mahazar to hold it accountable for the fire.
According to the mahazar, the fuse wire fixed in the main switch was intact.
'This is a clear indication that the short circuit had taken place from a point outside the main switch. So the version given by the complainant that the fire occurred on account of the short circuit arose from the service wire fixed on the premises of the complainant, as the service wire was not maintained by the opposite parties after the installation which took place 30 years back, appears to be probable,' its order said.
The commission found deficiency in service on the part of the KSEB which did not take steps for proper maintenance of the service wire.

"Licensed trading firms cannot impose arbitrary service tax on withdrawals," an official said. Cops have registered a case and the cyber cell is tracking the digital trail of the transferred funds.

Couple killed in Hazaribag as portion of roof collapses
1 2 3 Hazaribag: A couple was killed after a part of the roof of their house collapsed at Rasoidhamna village under Barhi police station limits here on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. Johan Tudu, Barhi sub-divisional officer, said the deceased were identified as Hadis Ansari (52) and his wife Zamira Khatun (48). Zamira was also a ward member of the Rasoidhamna panchayat. "They were sleeping in their room when the roof of their thatched house collapsed, killing them on the spot," he said. While the SDO said there was no rain during the time of the collapse, recent heavy downpour might have led to the roof's collapse. Other members of the family, who were sleeping in separate rooms, were unharmed. "Relief and rescue operations have started, and compensation will be provided as per govt rule. The debris is being cleared by the rescue team," Tudu said. The district administration will now survey old houses to take corrective measure to prevent such incidents, officials said. The couple had five children. While one of the girls was married off, the remaining children are minors. "We have paid an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 to the next of the kin for their last rites. A sum of Rs 4 lakh in compensation will be given to the kin from the state disaster management coffers after documentation process is over." The administration has also provided 50kg ration so that the deceased couple's children do not starve.

2 dead, 1 hurt in road accident
Rourkela: Two young men died on the spot and another was critically injured when their motorcycle collided head-on with a trailer near Brahmanipali on Bankibahal-Bhedabahal coal corridor road in Sundargarh district Sunday night. The third person, Bikash Nayak (24), sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital after being initially taken to Sundargarh district headquarters hospital. The trailer driver fled the scene following the accident. Both vehicles involved in the accident have been seized. SDPO of Sadar, Sundargarh, Nirmal Mohapatra, said that police are searching for the driver. Local residents staged an eight-hour road blockade over frequent accidents on the coal corridor road. The protestors lifted the blockade early Monday morning after authorities assured them of a joint meeting involving the RTO, tehsil, police, and PWD authorities to address the safety concerns. They also promised that families of the deceased would receive Rs 4 lakh each as compensation along with assistance from the Red Cross.
