Paul O'Sullivan joins Sha Tin celebrations after Fast Network's explosive win

Paul O'Sullivan was back in familiar territory to join in on the celebrations of his former galloper Fast Network's explosive four-length victory in Sunday's Class Two Barker Handicap (1,200m) at Sha Tin.
Originally owned by O'Sullivan, the son of Wrote was snapped up by Hong Kong connections on the back of an impressive trial victory in New Zealand.
O'Sullivan trained more than 500 winners over 18 years in Hong Kong, headlined by five-time Group One-winning sprinter Aerovelocity and Vital King who won the 2007 Hong Kong Derby (2,000m).
'My brother [Lance] and I owned him,' O'Sullivan said of Fast Network. 'He had a couple of trials and was then sold to Hong Kong.'
Fast Network's latest start coincided with O'Sullivan's once-a-year return to the city and the gelding's trainer, Dennis Yip Chor-hong, made sure he was front and centre in the winners' enclosure.
After stepping a touch slowly, Fast Network scythed his way through the small field of seven from last under Hugh Bowman to justify $1.45 favouritism.
He cruised past Zac Purton's mount Bottomuptogether to lead passing the 200m and drew clear to beat that galloper by four lengths, notching his fifth success at start 10.
'Before this race, I told Zac I would run him on April 14 but with only six runners in this race, I needed to put him in,' Yip said after entering Fast Network during the closing time extension period.
Last out and first home! 👌

'His rating will go up 10 or 12 [points] so he won't be able to run on April 14 now. He'll be over 100 now.'
Fast Network was not entered for the Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) on April 27. Supplementary entries for the sprint close on April 7, but Yip said he wasn't sure of upcoming plans for the four-year-old.
'I think 1,200m or 1,400m [is his best trip]. [Christophe] Soumillon told me the mile is his maximum, so he's better at 1,200m or 1,400m,' Yip said.
Forza forges ahead
Jamie Richards believes the best is yet to come from La Forza after the three-year-old passed his first Class Three test with flying colours on Sunday.
Fresh from a dominant first-up win which came with a 10-point ratings penalty, La Forza continued his winning ways under Zac Purton in the Harlech Handicap (1,000m).
The son of Toronado ran on from just off the leaders to salute as the $2.5 favourite, beating Circuit Jolly by a length and a quarter.
'He's going well. He's a horse who raced as a Griffin and he's just needed a little bit of time to toughen up,' Richards said after La Forza improved his record to three wins from five starts.
'It's always hard for a horse to win when they're coming off a 10-pound penalty, but he's come out and delivered again today.
'Whatever he does this season is going to be a bonus for what I think he'll be able to do next season as a four-year-old.
'At the moment [I'll keep him to 1,000m] but in time he will get further. I don't think we need to be changing a winning formula at the moment. I'm looking forward to the future with him.'
Paradise clings on
Little Paradise backed up his strong trial form to score a fighting win on debut in the second section of the Class Four Plantation Handicap (1,200m).
An impressive winner of his two most recent trials, the Toronado three-year-old did a bit of work early to cross from barrier 13 to lead for Luke Ferraris before drawing clear in the straight.
While he was tiring late, he did enough to hold on and beat the fast-finishing Beauty Missile by a head.
'He's a nice horse. He still isn't mature,' Ting said of Little Paradise, who won a Randwick trial for trainer Bjorn Baker before he was sold to Hong Kong connections.
'He drew wide and got keen when the jockey pushed him out. After this race he will improve. I'll keep him to 1,200m for now because he's still young and I think he'll be better as a four-year-old.
'We don't need to hurry for the next race, he'll probably have a trial to learn more and run again six weeks from now.'
Benno's belated double
Trainer Benno Yung Tin-pang fired in his first brace of the season, saving his best until last by winning the final two races on Sunday's card with Aeris Nova and Another World.

Aeris Nova caused an upset in the Class Three Homestead Handicap (1,200m), knocking off the $1.4 favourite Crossborderpegasus by a short head when starting an $18.9 chance.
Another World scored his third win this term when he justified $1.8 favouritism with a comfortable success in the Class Three Lugard Handicap (1,400m).

Beauty Joy bags another Group win: ‘He's probably got as much head noise as I did when I was 18'

One of Hong Kong's old warhorses helped Brenton Avdulla celebrate a new arrival at Sha Tin on Sunday night, with Beauty Joy taking out the Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m). Not long after welcoming baby boy Kobe to the family, Avdulla landed his second Group victory aboard the notoriously difficult Beauty Joy. 'He's probably got as much head noise as I did when I was 18 years old. We seem to get along very well,' said Avdulla of the Tony Cruz-trained eight-year-old. 'He was good to me last season and we've won another Group race today. Obviously well handled by Tony to get him here in good form and he did his job well.' 'He's such a quirky horse, you can't get any feel of him early. You've just got to let the bridle try and fall out of his mouth as much as possible because he can give you a very difficult ride,' said Avdulla of the four-time Group winner. 'I never knew I was really in the race until probably just before the corner when the pace steadied and he got hold of the bridle. I gave him a little click into gear and he felt like the horse that was going to take me a long way. 'He had to come off the Derby winner's back and get out after him and he did that in good style. It was nice to win for a loyal supporter like Tony and for the Kwok family. Kobe has brought a bit of luck to the team.' Cruz confirmed Beauty Joy will race on next season after pushing his prize money past HK$35 million. 'He's always been a very honest horse but difficult to ride. In the parade ring before the race, [owner] Simon [Kwok Siu-ming] said, 'I hope we win this race. If we win this race, we're going to keep on racing him'. He won, so it looks like we're going to keep on racing him next season,' said Cruz. 'He's a healthy horse and as long as he's healthy, we'll keep going. We're going to keep the flow going.' Avdulla finished the season's 81st meeting with a double, also saluting aboard Mister Dapper for David Eustace, while Zac Purton landed a brace of his own with victories aboard Chris So Wai-yin-trained debutant Lightness Of Music and Lo Pan Spirit for Jimmy Ting Koon-ho. 'Once he got behind the gates, it was pretty straightforward from there but it was good to see him do it on race day.' So headed home with multiple winners after also prevailing with Golden Fairy, with that galloper providing the first leg of a double for jockey Lyle Hewitson, who also saluted aboard Douglas Whyte's Morgan Success. Cody Mo Wai-kit also grabbed a brace thanks to wins from Jumbo Treasure and Flying Fortress.

Pray For Mir shoots for feature double after feeling the wrath of handicappers

Matthew Chadwick waves to the crowd after winning the Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) aboard Pray For Mir. Photo: Kenneth Chan Matthew Chadwick is hopeful Pray For Mir can overcome a 21-point jump in the ratings and continue his strong late-season form in Sunday's Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) at Sha Tin. Victorious in open company for the first time in last month's Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m), Pray For Mir will attempt to complete the same feature-race double Galaxy Patch bagged last season. Penalised so heavily because his last-start win came from 17 points outside the handicap, Pray For Mir will carry only 6lb more this weekend and Chadwick is confident he will be right in the thick of things again. 'He's very consistent and he's shown us what he's capable of. It's an interesting field. He gets in with a decent weight still so I'm not too worried about [the ratings jump],' said Chadwick of Pray For Mir, who led all the way to win the Lion Rock Trophy carrying 115lb. 'There's some more pace in the race, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out, but we've seen him take a sit before so we're not too worried about that. Pray For Mir was not for catching! Cody Mo savoured a first Group race win on Saturday at Sha Tin in the G3 Lion Rock Trophy... 💪 @mattLchadwixk #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 2, 2025 'It will just depend how much pressure there is. It's the end of the long season so you never know how the other horses are going to be, either.' While Pray For Mir is stepping up in trip, his rival Cap Ferrat drops in distance after running third behind Voyage Bubble in last month's Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m). The pair jump from adjacent gates and while Pray For Mir is expected to push forward from barrier eight, Hugh Bowman will have some work to do finding cover for Cap Ferrat from the ninth alley. 'He's in great form,' said Bowman of this year's Hong Kong Derby hero, who will carry 126lb. 'It's a lovely race for him and he gets in with a lovely weight. 'I would have really liked a soft draw with him, but it is what it is. I galloped him the other day on the grass and he gave me a really smooth feel. I think it's a lovely set up for him.'

Andrea Atzeni bullish about Patch Of Theta: ‘I wouldn't swap the horse for anything else in the race'

Andrea Atzeni has strong confidence in his two Group Three mounts at Sha Tin on Sunday. Photos: Kenneth Chan Bidding to add to what has already been a fruitful campaign, Andrea Atzeni has declared he wouldn't swap Patch Of Theta for any other ride in Sunday's Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin. The Sardinian jockey has legitimate claims in the final two features of the season, with Patch Of Theta and his Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) mount Bundle Award shaping as strong contenders. Atzeni, who sits third in the jockeys' championship with 54 wins, hops aboard Patch Of Theta for the first time as Francis Lui Kin-wai's classy five-year-old chases a second Group Three triumph this term. Victorious in the Chinese Club Challenge Cup (1,400m) in January, the Zoustar gelding put the writing on the wall with a fast-finishing third to Helios Express in the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) last start. Smart win, Patch Of Theta! 🫡 Francis Lui's Hong Kong International Sale graduate could be Stewards' Cup bound after his smashing G3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup victory on New Year's Day at Sha Tin... @KarisTeetan #LuckyStart | #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) January 2, 2025 'He's a very good ride to get,' Atzeni said. 'His last run was very good. If he can repeat that, he shouldn't be too far away. To be honest, I'd say I wouldn't swap the horse for anything else in the race. 'I think 1,400m is his perfect trip because he's not short of speed and he can travel strong. Sometimes 1,200m looks a little bit sharp and a mile, although he's won over it, can be a little bit far for him.' Patch Of Theta emerged as one of Lui's more progressive gallopers during his championship-winning campaign last season with four wins – all over 1,400m at Sha Tin. Since winning a Class Two mile and the Chinese Club Challenge Cup, he has been tested at a much higher level and, despite finishing well back in his two Group One starts, he was not disgraced. Atzeni highlighted another progressive Lui galloper in Packing Hermod, who shoots for a third consecutive win, and Group One victors Beauty Eternal and Invincible Sage as Patch Of Theta's major rivals on Sunday. Bundle Award drops back in trip in the Premier Plate after a solid fifth to Voyage Bubble in the Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) when making late ground from the tail of the field. The John Size-trained gelding has won three races this season, crowned by last month's Group Three Queen Mother Memorial Cup (2,400m). 'He's another good ride. He ran very well the other day in the mile-and-a-half race,' Atzeni said. 'If you take away the winner Voyage Bubble, it was a very close finish – there wasn't far between second, third, fourth and fifth. I didn't get stuck behind horses but if I got a slightly better run in the straight, I think I would have finished a lot closer. 'Back down into a Group Three handicap with a bottom weight [of 115lb], I know he's dropping back to 1,800m but he won over it before he went on to run in the Derby. 'It's a competitive race, but with the weight difference I think he's definitely well in.' Bundle Award jumps from gate 13 in an even race featuring the likes of dual Group Two winner Straight Arron, Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) hero Cap Ferrat and last-start Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) winner Pray For Mir. Blazing Wukong, an impressive debut winner for Ricky Yiu Poon-fai, and Frankie Lor Fu-chuen's talented three-year-old South Star are among the best of Atzeni's other rides this weekend. 'Blazing Wukong is a really nice horse. He trialled the other day and looked like he's sharpened up from his first run,' Atzeni said. 'It looks like a nice race, but I do like my horse and I think whatever he does this season, he's going to be a much better horse for next year. 'South Star is another horse I like a lot. It's a very good race with some young horses who could be pretty smart next season taking each other on.'
