AI to be applied to five govt sectors to boost efficiency, says Sim

PETALING JAYA: Artificial intelligence (AI) technology will be applied in the ecosystem of five main sectors to boost delivery of services and work efficiency.
The five sectors are medical and healthcare; education; agriculture and forestry; smart cities and transportation; and public service.
This initiative is in line with the government's commitment to improving safety at workplaces, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim (pic).
He said the Occupational Safety and Hazard Department (DOSH) would play a big part.
'The application of AI will bring a positive impact on the management of data on safety and health risks,' he said after launching the World Occupational Safety and Health Day at the Multimedia University, Cyberjaya yesterday.
Sim said the integration of drone technology, augmented reality and virtual reality by DOSH officers since last year has significantly enhanced forensic engineering, enforcement and accident investigations, particularly in hard-to-reach locations.
Drones were used in such places by DOSH in over 800 cases last year. As a result, 119 notices were issued to employers.
Sim said the ministry had also implemented over 100 enhancements to the Occupational Health and Safety (Osha) Act.
'With the enhancements, the Osha now extends to all workplaces instead of just 10 economic sectors, as in the past. It is also compulsory now to have an occupational safety and health coordinator at any workplace with more than five workers.
'Also, the law now protects workers who may distance themselves from their workplaces if they believe it is unsafe or poses hazards. We have also raised fines for breaching Osha laws from RM50,000 to RM500,000.
'This is not to punish but to ensure workers' safety is prioritised. A gloomy economy can no longer be used as an excuse to exploit workers and compromise on their safety,' he said.
Sim said workplace accident rates have dropped by 17% and deaths by 40% since 2014.
Sim also said the government has taken measures to ensure that new companies, whether local or foreign-owned, are of high-growth to create more job opportunities for graduates.
'Every year, around 300,000 locals graduate from higher education institutions.
'About one-third are STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) graduates, one-third are TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) graduates and the rest, other graduates.
'However, over the past 30 years, our economy could only provide 50,000 jobs for highly skilled workers. Hence, there is an imbalance between job opportunities and the availability of graduates,' Sim said.

Meanwhile, Perkeso, in a statement, said that a total of 74,576 job seekers nationwide have successfully secured employment through placement programmes conducted in collaboration with various stakeholders. 'This achievement not only demonstrates the commitment of all involved in enhancing employment opportunities, but also offers new hope for job seekers to build a better future, through ongoing collaborative efforts,' it said. It also noted that between January and June 13, Perlis Perkeso organised 33 open interview programmes, resulting in 522 individuals successfully securing new employment. It added that a total of 14 individuals received Perkeso benefits, amounting to RM239,732.90, in conjunction with the carnival's opening ceremony today. The benefits were provided under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4) and the Self-Employed Social Security Act 2017 (Act 789), covering various categories, including temporary disability benefit, permanent disability benefit, Survivors' Pension, and Invalidity Pension.

SIS did not use ‘Islam' in company registration, says minister

KOTA KINABALU (June 21): A check has confirmed that women's rights group Sisters in Islam (SIS) did not use the word 'Islam' in its official company registration, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. Armizan said the organisation was registered in 1993 as a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLBG) under the name SIS Forum (Malaysia) in accordance with the Companies Act 2016. He explained that under the Act, the word 'Islam' is considered a controlled term. Any company wishing to use it must seek clearance from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim). 'From Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry's jurisdiction, specifically through the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), the registered name was SIS Forum (Malaysia) and did not include the word 'Islam'. Therefore, we did not refer the matter to Jakim,' he said at a press conference after launching the Sabah-level 2025 Digital Business Programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah on Saturday. Armizan also disclosed that a total of 77,546 companies have been incorporated and 1,676 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) registered across Sabah to date. He said the figures were based on Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) statistics as of May 31 this year. 'This total does not include companies registered under the state's own legal framework, namely the Trade Licencing Ordinance 1948. Of the overall total, 31,110 companies and 1,510 LLPs are currently active. 'In Kota Kinabalu alone, 39,525 companies have been incorporated and 1,118 LLPs registered during the same period, of which 15,331 companies and 1,003 LLPs are active,' he said. He said PPP25 is a new initiative by SSM aimed at supporting the business development agenda for B40 entrepreneurs and aspiring business owners through digitalisation. 'The main focus is to provide participants with exposure to the benefits and importance of digitalisation in expanding markets, enhancing productivity, and improving product quality. 'The use of digital technology such as media and e-commerce platforms not only increases operational efficiency but also opens up wider market access, both locally and internationally,' he added. The Sabah programme marks the first of three PPP25 series planned for this year, with the remaining two to be held in Penang and Terengganu. During the event, SSM also presented Corporate Zakat Wakalah (WZK) contributions worth RM107,518 and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) donations totaling RM45,000 to underprivileged recipients.
