Viktor Hovland with a neck injury is among 3 players to withdraw at Travelers
CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Viktor Hovland withdrew after two holes at the Travelers Championship on Sunday when he felt soreness in his neck on the range and the pain became worse.
Hovland was among three players to withdraw from the PGA Tour's signature event. Eric Cole, who was tied for 14th, pulled out before the round started with an illness. Matti Schmid withdrew after playing four holes.
Hovland said he felt great while warming up until deciding to hit a couple of drives and then he felt something in his neck.
'It felt fine, didn't feel hardly anything at all, just felt like something was maybe brewing,' Hovland said. 'Then the next shot that I hit with a driver it just felt like ... it just cracked. I don't know exactly what happened, but there's something that happened and just couldn't move.'
Hovland said he could barely stand over the ball and move his neck when he withdrew.
'Couldn't really do anything,' he said.

The Travelers Championship is always a homecoming of sorts for the Vermont native who moved all around New England during his childhood. Far less antics this week, but JT had us covered here. Thomas hit a textbook double-cross on the par-5 13th hole and hooked it directly out of bounds. The ball ended up on the railroad tracks to the left of the gallery. He hit his third shot off the tee into the fairway, then hooked his fourth shot nearly into the water before duffing two chips and two-putting for nine. Thomas is now 4 over for the day as of 5:30 p.m. ET. He's 5 under for the tournament and 10 shots back of the leader, Tommy Fleetwood, after starting the day tied for the lead. He fired a bogey-free 32 on the front nine, too. Scottie Scheffler cards 4-over 39 on the front nine in the third round The world's best player is spending his 29th birthday in a freefall down the leaderboard. Scheffler, who is defending his title at the Travelers Championship this week, shot 4-over 39 on the outward nine Saturday, falling all the way back into a tie for 21st place at 5 under. He began the day sharing the lead with Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Thomas at 9 under. Scheffler made a triple bogey on the first hole before making a double bogey on the par-3 8th. Uncharacteristic stuff from the three-time major champion, but he still has time to turn it around. Increased police presence seen at the Travelers after incident on the 18th green in 2024 At last year's Travelers Championship, protesters stormed the 18th green during the final round as the last group was preparing to putt, throwing smoke bombs and causing a major disruption. An activist group later claimed responsibility for the protest, which was aimed at drawing attention toward global warming and climate change. Advertisement The protesters were tackled by security and police personnel, handcuffed, and dragged off the golf course in front of everyone. This year, it's obvious organizers want to prevent something like that from happening again, as they've increased the police presence around TPC River Highlands. Tommy Fleetwood posts clean front nine, makes the turn with the lead Tommy Fleetwood wants this one. He's in prime position to nab the first PGA Tour win of his career, holding onto the outright lead with 27 holes remaining. He fired a bogey-free 32 on the front nine Saturday to make the turn at 12 under, one shot ahead of Russell Henley, who's in solo second. Keegan Bradley, Rory McIlroy, Russell Henley making an early push on Saturday World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is just three shots off the lead as of 3:40 p.m. ET. He's 9 under for the tournament and four under for the day after carding a bogey-free 31 on the outward nine. Similarly, Russell Henley shot bogey-free 30 on the front nine and also sits at 9 under. Meanwhile, 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley is on fire to start his third round. The 39-year-old from Vermont is 4 under through 7 on the day and in a tie for second with Jason Day at 10 under. The 44-year-old Aussie started slow the first two days at the Travelers, posting a pair of 72s to enter the weekend 4 over. There's nothing slow about his third round, though. As of 12:20 p.m., Scott is 8 under through 15 holes after shooting 29 on the outward nine and making birdies on Nos. 12 and 14. He's 4 under for the tournament now, and as he comes down the closing stretch, he finds himself creeping into contention on moving day. Is TPC River Highlands back on easy mode for moving day at the Travelers? Thursday saw 14 players shoot 66 or better. Friday? Four. Advertisement Strong winds ramped up the difficulty during the second round at TPC River Highlands, which typically yields a birdie-laden scoring fest. A steady breeze at 15 mph with gusts up to 40 mph had players just trying to grind out their rounds without causing too much damage to their scorecard. It seems as if Saturday might be a lot more like the opening round, though. Winds will be minimal — rarely eclipsing 10 mph out of the west — and hot, humid conditions will allow players maximum distance and spin. Early scores being posted Saturday back up this notion that we're back on easy mode in Connecticut. Adam Scott shot 29 on the outward nine to begin his day, Matt Fitzpatrick started 4 under through eight, while Rickie Fowler is 4 under through 13 after a 77 on Friday. Donovan Solano hits 2 homers as the Seattle Mariners beat the Chicago Cubs 14-6
CHICAGO (AP) — Donovan Solano homered twice and drove in five runs, helping the Seattle Mariners outslug the Chicago Cubs for a 14-6 victory on Sunday. Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 31st homer for Seattle on a hot and windy afternoon at Wrigley Field. Dominic Canzone went deep twice as the Mariners won the rubber game of a weekend set that featured a total of 21 homers for the two teams. Raleigh connected in the first inning against Colin Rea (4-3). The two-run drive to center field was his fourth homer of the series. Seiya Suzuki homered twice and drove in three runs for the Cubs in their third loss in four games. Kyle Tucker and Reese McGuire also went deep for the NL Central leaders. Chicago trimmed Seattle's lead to 5-4 when Suzuki hit a two-run shot off Logan Gilbert (2-2) with two down in the fifth. It was Suzuki's 20th homer of the season. Seattle responded with two runs in the sixth. Canzone hit his second solo homer of the day, and Julio Rodríguez added a run-scoring groundout. Solano made it 9-4 with a two-run shot off Chris Flexen in the seventh. Solano went 9 for 14 in the series with eight RBIs. Key stat The Mariners improved to 9-3 in rubber games this season. Blue Jays' Max Scherzer expected to come off the IL and start on Wednesday at Cleveland
TORONTO (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start for Toronto at Cleveland on Wednesday, manager John Schneider said after the Blue Jays' 4-2 loss to the White Sox on Sunday. 'He's ready to go,' Schneider said of Scherzer, adding that the veteran right-hander will likely be capable of throwing as many as 90 pitches. Scherzer was declared ready to return after throwing between 30 and 40 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday morning. 'Really, really excited to have him back,' Schneider said. 'That's a huge, huge, obviously, addition to us. It's Max Scherzer. I'll take that any day of the week.' At Columbus last Wednesday, Scherzer gave up two runs, struck out four and walked none over 4 1/3 innings in the second of two rehab starts for Triple-A Buffalo. The previous Friday, Scherzer struck out eight in 4 1/3 scoreless innings for the Bisons in a home start against Worcester. The 40-year-old Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in February. He left his Toronto debut against Baltimore on March 29 after three innings because of soreness in his right lat muscle. The next day, Toronto put Scherzer on the injured list because of inflammation in his thumb. Scherzer has had two cortisone injections this season to relieve inflammation in his troublesome thumb. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list last month, but became eligible to return May 29. He went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in nine starts for Texas last season, starting the year on the injured list while recovering from lower back surgery. Scherzer said earlier this season that his sore thumb, which also impacted his 2022 and 2023 seasons, was also an issue in 2024. Scherzer won World Series titles with Washington in 2019 and Texas in 2023. He won his first Cy Young Award after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts for Detroit in 2013. The eight-time All-Star earned consecutive NL Cy Young Awards with the Nationals in 2016 and 2017.
