Campbell's Earnings Exceed Estimates, Fueled by At-Home Cooking Trends

Epoch Times02-06-2025

Budget-conscious American consumers are making more thoughtful decisions about their spending, which for some means spending more time at home, watching Netflix, and cooking their meals.
After Campbell's Company reported better-than-expected earnings for the third quarter of fiscal year 2025 on June 2, CEO Mick Beekhuizen informed Wall Street analysts that the food manufacturing giant is seeing improved consumption across all consumer income groups. In particular, he noted that consumers have been cooking at home at the highest levels since early 2020, driving growth in the volume and mix of soups, broths, and sauces.

M&A News: Home Depot and QXO Battle for GMS in Construction Supremacy Bid

American home improvement retailer Home Depot (HD) has initiated a bidding war with smaller rival QXO Inc. (QXO) to strengthen its market position and capture greater contract revenue. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Home Depot made an undisclosed takeover offer for GMS Inc. (GMS) yesterday, following an unsolicited bid from QXO on Wednesday. Confident Investing Starts Here: Home Depot and QXO aim to secure a larger share of the construction supplies and tools market by becoming bigger and more technologically advanced players capable of winning larger contracts. GMS distributes building products and tool supplies, including wallboard, ceilings, steel framing, and complementary construction products to residential and commercial contractors across North America. It operates around 320 distribution centers and 100 tool sales, rental, and service centers. QXO Makes a Compelling Bid for GMS QXO offered to buy all of GMS' outstanding shares for $95.20 per share in cash, valuing the company at about $5 billion. This offer represents a 27% premium over GMS' 60-day volume-weighted average price. The news pushed shares of both companies higher on June 18, with QXO surging 11.7% and GMS closing up 10.6%. QXO has given GMS' board until June 24 to review and respond to the offer. CEO Brad Jacobs has warned that if the company fails to respond, he will take the offer directly to GMS' shareholders. Jacobs is 'confident' that shareholders will find the offer attractive. Interestingly, both GMS and QXO have built their businesses by acquiring smaller companies in the sector over the years. GMS' board has stated that it is reviewing the offer in consultation with its independent legal and financial advisors, acting in the best interests of the company and its shareholders. In the meantime, GMS reported better-than-expected results for Q4FY25 on June 18. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.29, beating the consensus of $1.11, while revenues of $1.33 billion also surpassed estimates of $1.3 billion. Despite the downturn in the construction market amid interest rate challenges and overall uncertainty, GMS delivered a solid quarterly performance. Considering its resilient results, it appears that QXO and Home Depot are betting on the right horse for now. Is Home Depot Stock a Good Buy Now? On TipRanks, HD stock has a Strong Buy consensus rating based on 19 Buys and five Hold ratings. Also, the average Home Depot price target of $428.77 implies 23.6% upside potential from current levels. Year-to-date, HD stock has lost 9.7%.

The air fryer I use every day is 20% off right now — and it has a window!

I've reviewed loads of the best air fryers now, and the Philips 2000 Series air fryer is the one I want to take to the grave. It's compact, pretty, it works, and my favorite part? It's got a window! Sometimes I find myself leaning on my kitchen countertop just watching my food cook, because, well, why not? It's low-key better than Netflix or TikTok. Now the Philips 2000 Series air fryer is $20 off at Williams Sonoma, and for U.K. readers, it's a whopping 50% off at Amazon! This is the one air fryer I recommend for small households. If you're tight on space or only cooking for a couple of people, then this is the top air fryer for you. I love this air fryer for so many reasons: it's easy to use, looks the part, and can handle anything you throw at it. I've made cakes, brownies, grilled cheese sandwiches, and a whole roast chicken in this. Heck, I've even made lasagne in my air fryer! If you're in the U.K. (like me!), then you're getting an even better deal. At Amazon right now the Philips 2000 Series air fryer is just £51, which is half price! Run, don't walk to Amazon and get this deal before it's over. Oh, where do I start? This air fryer is just chef's kiss. It's worth noting that if you've got a large family or want to make tons of food in the air fryer, you might be better off getting a dual basket like the Ninja Foodi Dual Zone (my parents have this air fryer and won't stop telling me about how good it is). However, seeing as I'm just cooking for myself and one other person, the Philips 2000 Series is perfect for me. Last week I made a full basket of fries and they were so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside — in just 24 minutes! I've also roasted a whole chicken in 52 minutes (yes, I checked its internal temp with one of the best meat thermometers) and baked lasagnes in the air fryer to save $$$ on electricity bills. The basket can fit an 8-inch baking dish, which is perfect for me. While this is more anecdotal than anything else, I also find that my Philips 2000 Series air fryer is way cheaper than turning my oven on. This obviously depends on where you live and your energy supplier, but my air fryer is literally a fraction of the cost of my oven, according to my electricity meter. It might not be the same for you, but that's my personal experience. And now that it's just $79? This is a severely competitive price for such an adept air fryer. I would run on over to Williams Sonoma and snap this up before the deal ends.

Does Kroger (NYSE:KR) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away. Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Kroger (NYSE:KR). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. It certainly is nice to see that Kroger has managed to grow EPS by 21% per year over three years. If growth like this continues on into the future, then shareholders will have plenty to smile about. It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. It seems Kroger is pretty stable, since revenue and EBIT margins are pretty flat year on year. That's not bad, but it doesn't point to ongoing future growth, either. In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings and revenue, over time. For finer detail, click on the image. View our latest analysis for Kroger While we live in the present moment, there's little doubt that the future matters most in the investment decision process. So why not check this interactive chart depicting future EPS estimates, for Kroger? Since Kroger has a market capitalisation of US$44b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$372m. This comes in at 0.9% of shares in the company, which is a fair amount of a business of this size. This still shows shareholders there is a degree of alignment between management and themselves. While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalisations over US$8.0b, like Kroger, the median CEO pay is around US$14m. The Kroger CEO received total compensation of just US$379k in the year to February 2025. That's clearly well below average, so at a glance that arrangement seems generous to shareholders and points to a modest remuneration culture. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally. You can't deny that Kroger has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. If you still have your doubts, remember too that company insiders have a considerable investment aligning themselves with the shareholders and CEO pay is quite modest compared to similarly sized companiess. Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to investing but it definitely makes Kroger look rather interesting indeed. We should say that we've discovered 3 warning signs for Kroger that you should be aware of before investing here. Although Kroger certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares.
