San Antonio police: No evidence that ‘King of the Hill' actor Jonathan Joss' fatal shooting was a ‘hate crime'

Toronto Star03-06-2025

A day after actor Jonathan Joss was shot and killed in San Antonio, his husband posted a statement Monday on Joss' Facebook page, saying the shooting was spurred by homophobia.
Hours later, the San Antonio police department posted on X, writing, 'Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that … Mr. Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation.'
An investigation remains ongoing.
Joss' husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, had accused the suspect, identified by police as 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, of directing homophobic slurs toward him and Joss before the shooting on Sunday night.

'He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other,' Gonzales wrote.
Ceja was taken into police custody and charged with murder, according to officials. His bond was set for $200,000, per KENS 5.
Reports have also emerged of a long-standing feud between Joss and Ceja.
The two were former neighbors and used to shoot toward each others' property, KENS 5 reported.
Neighbors told the station the feud compromised their safety and that law enforcement was not responsive to complaints.
San Antonio police said a unit had been mediating the dispute, according to KENS 5.
Joss had returned to his former address on Sunday to check his mail, KENS 5 reported. His house burned down earlier this year.

Joss appeared in 'Parks and Recreation' as well as 'Tulsa King,' but he was perhaps best known for his role voicing John Redcorn in King of the Hill.
The animated sitcom has a reboot that premieres Aug. 4 on Hulu. Joss had lines recorded for the upcoming season, Variety reported.
In a Monday statement to People magazine, 'Parks and Recreation' actor Nick Offerman said the show's cast was 'heartbroken' over Joss' death.
'Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.'

Police: Suspect shot and killed by a security guard after a shooting at a church in Michigan

WAYNE, Mich. (AP) — A gunman opened fire during a service at a suburban Detroit church on Sunday, wounding at least one person before a security guard killed him, police said. The incident happened at Crosspointe Community Church in Wayne, a city of about 17,000 people outside Detroit around 11 a.m., the church's pastor, Bobby Kelly Jr., told the Detroit News. Police said one person was shot in the leg. Kelly said a church member ran the shooter over with his truck, giving the security guard time to shoot him. The person who was shot in the leg was the security guard, the pastor told the newspaper. No one else was hurt, he said. About 150 people were attending the service, Kelly said. Messages The Associated Press left Sunday morning with the Wayne Police Department, on the church voicemail and on the church's Facebook page were not immediately returned.

Israel says the remains of 3 hostages have been recovered from Gaza

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The Israeli military says it has recovered the remains of three hostages held in the Gaza Strip. It identified them as Yonatan Samerano, 21; Ofra Keidar, 70; and Shay Levinson, 19. All three were killed during Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack into Israel that ignited the ongoing war. The militant group is still holding 50 hostages, less than half of them believed to be alive. Kobi Samerano said in a Facebook post that his son's remains were returned on what would have been Yonatan's 23rd birthday. 'The campaign to return the hostages continues consistently and is happening alongside the campaign against Iran,' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 people in the Oct. 7 attack. More than half the hostages have been returned in ceasefire agreements or other deals, eight have been rescued alive and Israeli forces have recovered dozens of bodies. Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed over 55,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which has said that women and children make up more than half of the dead. It does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. ___ Follow AP's war coverage at
