Search intensifies after Australian teen vanishes without a trace
The search for a missing 17-year-old Australian girl has taken a grim turn as police have deployed cadaver dogs to scour a national park on the island continent.
Pheobe Bishop vanished earlier this month after she was dropped off at Bundaberg Airport on May 15 to catch an early morning flight to Brisbane. She never checked in with the airline.
She has not been seen or heard from since and, according to the Australian Associated Press, she wasn't picked up on CCTV entering the airport terminal.
What we know about her disappearance
Before her disappearance, Bishop was living in the small town of Gin Gin, approximately 360 kilometres north of Brisbane, with two people police have described as 'associates.'
Police first got wind that something might be amiss after she failed to show up in Western Australia after her scheduled flight.

She was last seen on Airport Drive at Bundaberg Airport around 8:30 a.m. on May 15, carrying a suitcase.
The following day, police issued a missing person's report.
In various press conferences and updates since Bishop went missing, Queensland detectives have shared a number of clues and pieces of information about her life leading up to the day she disappeared.
Police say they believe the couple she had been living with, Tanika Bromley and James Wood, drove Bishop to the airport that day.

On May 19, police searched the land surrounding the Bundaberg Airport, but failed to turn up anything belonging to Bishop. The next day, they asked the public for tips regarding a 2011 grey Hyundai ix35 that was seen near the airport the day she went missing.
'We do have associates that are assisting police with our inquiries at the moment, and this is why we're trying to narrow down that timeline in relation to where Pheobe could be,' Det. Acting Insp. Ryan Thompson said at the time, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
The next day, after Bishop had been missing for six days, police announced they considered her disappearance 'suspicious' and that they had established two potential crime scenes — one being the dilapidated house in Gin Gin, where Bishop had been living with Wood and Bromley, and the other the grey Hyundai, which police have seized.

'We do hold concerns for her safety,' Thompson told reporters last Wednesday.
'It has been nearly a week since she was last sighted and it's out of character for her not to make any contact with anyone.'
'Grasping onto hope'
Meanwhile, Bishop's mother, Kylie Johnson, has been pleading for information about her daughter, often speaking directly to Bishop through social media posts.
'We enter another day with Pheobe still missing, our hearts are breaking more and more,' she posted on Facebook last week. 'Phee we just need to know that you're ok? We just need to hear your voice!
'I'm begging anyone that has anything to contact Police link 131 444.'
It's unclear why Bishop did not reside with her mother.
The search intensifies
In the past days, police have turned their search efforts to a nearby park, deploying land and air search teams, as well as dive squads in Good Night Scrub National Park.
On Sunday, police dogs and homicide officers were also called into the park.

On Monday, forensic detectives said they have collected some items as evidence during the search that 'are believed to be linked to the investigation.' Those items are undergoing forensic examination, reports local outlet 7 News.
So far, no one has been taken into custody in the case, but police say they continue to speak to people who know Bishop and are committed to exploring any tips or related information that could help determine her whereabouts.
'People don't vanish,' Thompson told reporters last Thursday.
'Someone knows something and we're urging anyone with information to contact police immediately.
'You may have the small piece of information that leads us to finding Pheobe.'

Continued cougar sightings keep parts of Whistler Blackcomb closed
Large areas of Whistler Blackcomb will stay closed again on Monday after more cougar encounters over the weekend. The latest sightings were reported Sunday morning on the Blackcomb side of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. Whistler Blackcomb says the Ascent Trail, Blackcomb bike trails, and both the Creekside and Garbanzo Zones will stay closed Monday. A young family tells Global News they were on a trail just before noon when a woman got caught with a cougar above her and another below. The family says the woman banged her hiking poles together to scare the big cats off before they arrived. 'And he's like, 'yeah it's a cougar' and he just kept screaming 'it's a cougar, it's a cougar.'' Conservation officers say they have not found the cougars yet but stress the priority is public safety. 'We're still up on the mountain investigating those incidents and we have a number of conservation officers in the area,' says Sgt. Chris Boyle with the BC Conservation Officer Service. 'In both instances no one was injured however the cougars did get quite close to the bikers and in one case, the cougar chased the biker for about 300 metres,' he added. Officers say the animals are not candidates for relocation since they're already in a wild area, they hope the big cats will leave on their own, adding these incidents are believed to be related. 'We had some encounters at Rubble Creek a couple of weeks ago in Garibaldi Park and then again on Whistler Mountain a couple of days ago, and now on Blackcomb mountain, Boyle explains. 'So, it's a series of events similar in nature, which is quite unusual.' Officers say if the cougars remain in the area and threaten the safety of people, they could be destroyed.

‘There's no protection': Canadian Sikh leaders face threats, organization says
The World Sikh Organization says multiple Sikh leaders in Canada have received notice from the RCMP that their lives could be in imminent danger. But WSO spokesperson Balpreet Singh told The West Block's Mercedes Stephenson that the national police force shared few details about who was behind the threats — and little in terms of protection or assistance. 'What happens is that you're approached by law enforcement and they give you a piece of paper that says that your life is in imminent risk of being targeted, that you could be killed,' Singh said in an interview. 'They take that paper back and then they ask you, 'Well, where do you think this threat is coming from?' And it's really surreal to think that the police have approached you, and now they're asking you, 'Where do you think the threat is coming from?' You're not provided any real supports.' 'It's really an odd situation where you just don't know where to go. And, you know, people that have had to leave their homes, have to leave their families. And there's no end to it,' Singh said. Cougar activity prompts closure of Whistler bike park trails
Mountain biking in Whistler is a popular activity for the first official day of summer but that's not the case this weekend. A large portion of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park was closed due to cougar activity in the area. The BC Conservation Officer Service says it received 'information about two separate incidents at approximately 7 p.m. Friday night, involving one or more cougars,' a statement reads. In another incident, a mountain biker was approached by a cougar but ran off when other bikers arrived — though the big cat stayed in the area. No one was injured during these incidents. Story continues below advertisement The COS says, as a precaution, the creekside and garbonzo zones of the bike park will be closed Saturday and Sunday. 'In consultation with Whistler Blackcomb, partial closures of the park are in effect to ensure public safety. For information on closures, visit the park website,' a statement reads. This closure comes just a week after BC Parks had to close a popular trail near Garibaldi Lake after hikers had a close encounter with a cougar just off Rubble Creek trail. That trail is roughly 20 kilometres away from the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.
