‘We're being made an example of': Irish trio Kneecap accuses Israeli lobby of trying to silence pro-Palestine artists
LONDON, May 25 – Irish rap group Kneecap performed their first shows this week since member Mo Chara was charged with a terror offence in the United Kingdom, claiming authorities tried to cancel the gigs.
Kneecap had played a last-minute show at London's 100 Club on Thursday, before headlining the Wide Awake Festival in Brockwell Park on Friday night — while claiming that the pro-Israel lobby is trying to make an example out of them.
'We are being made an example of. The Israeli lobbyists are trying to prove to other artists that if you speak out, we're going to hit you where it hurts most,' said rapper Moglai Bap as reported by music magazine Rolling Stone.
'They're trying to cancel gigs, they're trying to cancel my freedom of travel, and the fact that I'm speaking to this amount of people, and I assume the majority of people agree, shows that we're on the right side of history.'
Earlier, the report said the group opened with the same political message used at Coachella last month: 'Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people. It is being enabled by the British government.'
Rapper Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, known as Mo Chara, alleged that authorities had tried to stop the concert.
'They tried to stop this gig. Honestly lads, you've no idea how close we were to being pulled off this gig,' he reportedly said.
He was previously charged for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag during a London concert last year — which him and the band has denied.
Ó hAnnaidh claimed the timing of his charge was politically motivated, alleging authorities wanted to prevent their Glastonbury appearance next month.
'The reason it was that quick is because Glastonbury is just around the corner. They're trying to silence us.'
Last month, the group said they are facing a 'coordinated smear campaign' following their statements at the Coachella music festival condemning what they described as the ongoing genocide against Palestinians.
Kneecap said the attacks against them, mainly originating from the United States, were based on 'deliberate distortions and falsehoods', and that they were taking action against several of these efforts.

LONDON, June 20 — World number one Jannik Sinner is to release a duet with famous Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. The song, Polvere e Gloria (meaning Dust And Glory), features three-time Grand Slam champion Sinner repeating parts of his winning and losing speeches, which he recorded at Bocelli's studio in Tuscany. Sinner said he was ecstatic and honoured to be part of the project with Bocelli. 'Andrea for 30 years has been a unique and extraordinary voice, a flag for our country in the rest of the world,' he said. 'I could never have imagined hearing my voice in one of his songs. It's extremely moving.' The track will be released on June 20 and features both Italian and English lyrics. The accompanying music video features personal and archive images from the duo's childhoods, along with scenes filmed as they collaborated at Bocelli's estate. Sinner is the first Italian to top either the men's or women's singles world rankings in tennis. US singer Chris Brown pleads not guilty in UK nightclub assault case, trial set for 2026
LONDON, June 20 — American R&B singer Chris Brown today pleaded not guilty in a UK court to a charge stemming from an alleged London nightclub brawl in 2023. Brown, 36, wearing a dark suit and tie as well as glasses, stood in the dock in London as the charge was put to him, replying: 'Not guilty, ma'am.' The singer, who is on £5 million (RM28.4 million) bail, waved to people in the public gallery as he left, following his plea to allegedly attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. A five to seven-day long trial was scheduled to start on October 26, 2026. The singer was held in custody for a nearly a week in May after he was arrested in the northwestern city of Manchester. He was later released on bail. Under the terms of his bail, he will forfeit the £5 million guarantee if he fails to return for court proceedings. He was also given the go-ahead to continue his scheduled international tour which began on June 8 in Amsterdam. The star, who had a troubled relationship with Barbadian singer Rihanna, is on the UK leg of his tour, with his next date in London tomorrow. Brown is charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to an assault in which the victim was allegedly struck several times with a bottle before being pursued, punched and kicked. The alleged incident took place at a nightclub in Hanover Square in London on February 19, 2023 while Brown was touring in the UK. Grammy winner Police detained him in the early hours of May 13 at a five-star hotel in Manchester after he reportedly flew in by private jet. Other bail terms include that he should surrender his passport if he is not travelling. He is also required to live at a specific address known to the court and is not permitted to visit the nightclub were the alleged assault took place or contact the alleged victim, Abraham Diah. He appeared in the dock with co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, a US national, with whom he is jointly charged. Akinlolu also entered a not guilty plea to the same charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. Both men are also jointly charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. They will enter pleas to that charge on July 11, the court was told. Brown also faces a third charge of having an offensive weapon, a bottle, in public. The Grammy-winning singer is known for mid-2000s hits such as Kiss, Kiss. He rose from a local church choir in Virginia to sudden fame with his rich R&B voice and later rap, but his reputation has been tarnished by the allegations of abuse.
