Volkswagen have become known over the years for their dependable motors and relaxed driving experience.
Vehicles like the Volkswagen Golf have seen overhauls over the years but have largely remained similar with each new model.
That model has allowed Volkswagen to become the UK's favourite car brand, selling 166,000 models in Britian in 2024.
However, the German manufacturer has announced plans to shake-up its slow-and-steady reputation.
Executives are exploring giving a green light to producing the high-performance ID 2 R.
The car would be the brand's first model to use in-wheel motors and would come fitted with a blistering 400bhp engine.
Having two additional electric hub motors, alongside the standard ones within the rear vehicles, will boost the cars performance - without sacrificing boot space.
According to Autocar, the German manufacturer is considering using a Balkan partner to develop the ID 2 R.
It will also use dynamic drive modes, brake-based yaw control and predictive torque distribution.
Volkswagen's R division hopes to ensure that the car remains light and responsive, despite the added weight.
The hothatch would be going head-to-head with the turbo-charged Renault 5 Turbo 3E in the market for high-powered family cars.
Inside the Volkswagen ID
Renault's Turbo 3E can reach 60mph in just 3.5 seconds and can reach high speeds of 168mph.
When announcing the high-end vehicle, a spokesperson for the brand said: "In 1980, Renault 5 Turbo was the 1st French production car with a turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 160 hp.
"In 2025, Renault 5 Turbo 3E gives the legend a boost with a dual 540 hp¹ electric powertrain and far superior performance.
"Precision engineering, responsive handling, and next-generation innovation: the turbo spirit is back. 1,980 cars produced globally, with extreme customisation options, right down to tailor-made solutions from our designers."
It is also an EV, meaning it emits far fewer emissions than most vehicles.
Volkswagen have been approached for comment by The Sun.

Arne Slot breaks golden Jurgen Klopp transfer rule by doing something he avoided

It took Arne Slot just two summer transfer windows at Liverpool to blow predecessor Jurgen Klopp out of the water in regards to transfer spend following the acquisition of Florian Wirtz Liverpool manager Arne Slot is making up for lost time this summer after opening the transfer floodgates at Anfield. And it has taken the Dutchman just a few weeks to break the rule predecessor Jurgen Klopp sought to adhere to above all others in the market. Klopp, 58, previously made a point of stressing his morals when it came to keeping Liverpool financially solvent. And that meant not necessarily spending on a par with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United, who copped criticism from the former Reds boss for their free-spending ways in the past. ‌ Of course that changed over time as Liverpool made allowances in opening their chequebook so Klopp could compete. But the German was staunchly against spending £100million fees on individuals when he first arrived at Anfield – a line Liverpool have now crossed with the blockbuster signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a British record deal worth up to £116m, with £100m of that being guaranteed. ‌ "If you bring one player in for £100m or whatever and he gets injured then it all goes through the chimney," Klopp warned back in 2016 after United forked out £89m to re-sign Paul Pogba from Juventus. "The day that this is football, I'm not in a job any more, because the game is about playing together. "That is why somebody invented passes so these players can play together. It's not about running with the ball because you can do it all the time. Building the group is not my unique idea – it is necessary to be successful in football. "Other clubs can go out and spend more money and collect top players, yes. Do I have to do it differently to that? I don't know exactly how much money we could spend because nobody has told me up to this point, 'No, no, no you can't do this.' "If I spend money it is because I am trying to build a real team. You can win championships, you can win titles. But maybe there is a manner in which you want it. It is about how it is." The Merseysiders have added 22-year-old Wirtz to their armoury and could have to shell out as much as £116m if certain conditions are met. And that addition means Liverpool have now spent more money in this window than any other in their history to date. ‌ Slot recruited Jeremie Frimpong (also from Leverkusen) for £29.5m earlier in the summer, while goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has joined from Valencia for an initial £25m, along with £4m in add-ons – with that deal agreed last summer counting towards their 2025 spending. Not only that, but a £40m move for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is also in the pipeline. Provided the Kerkez deal goes through as expected, that would take Liverpool's total spend this summer to roughly £215m (providing all bonus clauses are met). And despite the fact the transfer window has been open for less than one month, that would far eclipse the previous record for total spend in any other window. ‌ The closest Klopp came to matching that sum was in the summer of 2018 when he spent around £170m on new signings. That included Alisson from Roma (£65m), Naby Keita from RB Leipzig (£53m), Fabinho from Monaco (£39m) and Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke (£13.5m), though the investments paid off as they won the Champions League that season. Eventually, Klopp wasn't too far from overseeing a couple of nine-digit deals himself, considering Liverpool signed Virgil van DIjk and Darwin Nunez for £75m and £85m, respectively. Van Dijk became the most expensive defender in football history at the time of his move from Southampton, and Klopp later walked back his comments concerning exorbitant transfer fees. ‌ "These kind of things happen. When you want to sign a striker as exciting as Darwin is, that's the market and you have to pay the price," he conceded in 2023. "I said so many things in my life and life caught me then later and showed me that my imagination was obviously not clear enough for how quickly life can change. That's how it is. "After that [comment about Pogba], we bought a centre-half for quite a decent fee [£75m for Van Dijk], we bought a goalie for quite a decent fee [Alisson]. Our situation is always the same, we try to level it somehow [with sales], the things we invest in the boys and in the players we sell, it's kind of that it's not going out of any kind of range and that worked so far, but I know, I heard it immediately." To Slot's credit, he won the Premier League in his debut campaign despite barely spending at all last summer. It's only fair that one, therefore, takes into account that spread of cost, which brings his net spend to a more modest £100m or so per summer window so far.

Michael Schumacher's close friend offers heartbreaking update on F1 legend

Michael Schumacher suffered lifechanging injuries in a skiing accident in 2013 and his close friend Flavio Briatore has offered an update on the seven-time F1 world champion's condition Michael Schumacher's close friend and former boss Flavio Briatore has shared an emotional update on the Formula 1 legend's condition. Schumacher suffered a severe brain injury after a skiing accident in December 2013 and his wife, Corrina, has kept details of his treatment incredibly private. Very few people have been allowed to visit Schumacher, but it is known that he continues to require full-time care more than 11 years after the incident. Briatore, who brought Schumacher to Benetton and helped him win two world titles, is among the few that have visited the German since his accident. ‌ And when asked about Schumacher's current condition, he told Italian newspaper Corriere della Serra: "If I close my eyes, I see him smiling after a victory. I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though." ‌ After the accident, Schumacher spent 250 days in a medically induced coma before he was allowed to return home and continue receiving treatment. Although updates have been few and far between, Corinna did share some details in the 2021 Netflix documentary 'Schumacher'. "I miss Michael every day," she said. "But it is not just me who misses him. It's the children, the family, his father, everyone around him. I mean, everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here. Different, but he's here, and that gives us strength. READ MORE: Max Verstappen sparks disagreement between Nico Rosberg and Toto Wolff as theory emerges "We're together. We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. "'Private is private', as he always said. It's very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us and now we are protecting Michael." Jean Todt, who was Ferrari's team principal when Schumacher won five consecutive world titles, has also visited the F1 legend since the accident. "Michael is here, so I don't miss him," Todt told L'Equipe in 2023. ‌ "[But he] is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. "That's all there is to say. Unfortunately, fate struck him 10 years ago. He is no longer the Michael we knew in Formula 1."

Honda Won't Like The Horsepower On This New VW GTI

Volkswagen is turning heads with its 2026 Golf GTI Edition 50 Volkswagen has revealed the 2026 Golf GTI Edition 50—and it more than gives Honda's Civic Type R a run for its money. The Golf GTI Edition 50 features 321 horsepower, six more than the Civic Type R and just seven less horsepower than a Golf R. This special edition Volkswagen also boasts 310 lb-ft of torque, matching the Civic Type R. While horsepower is an essential component of the Golf GTI Edition 50 and Civic Type R rivalry, it doesn't tell the whole story. Let's take a closer look at these two vehicles' performance to more clearly illustrate where each model stands. 0:04 / 0:09 Audi A5 replaces A4: So, what's changed? Watch More Performance spotlight: Golf GTI Edition 50 vs Civic Type R The Golf GTI Edition 50 is Volkswagen's fastest production Golf to date in track performance, completing the world-famous Nordschleife circuit in seven minutes and 46 seconds. However, the 2025 Civic Type R set a Nordschleife front-wheel drive (FWD) record with a lap time of seven minutes and 44.881 seconds. Honda's Civic Type R comes standard with high-performance summer tires providing excellent grip, but they're not the Golf GTI Edition 50's optional full semi-slicks. The GTI's semi-slick Bridgestone Potenza Race tires, combined with its available adapted suspension mounts, likely offer a higher ultimate grip threshold, especially in dry conditions. This Volkswagen's optional GTI-Performance package, which includes the Bridgestone Potenza Race tires, also comes with 19-inch Warmenau (associated with Volkswagen's R division) forged wheels and a lightweight R-Performance exhaust system with a rear titanium silencer. The Golf GTI Edition 50 further optimizes front grip and agility with stiffer springs, making for a more track-like ride feel, while the Civic Type R's adaptive damper system better balances daily and track driving. The Civic Type R's broader range of adjustability could've been the primary factor causing it to edge out the Golf GTI Edition 50 at Nordschleife, given the track's long, complex design. Golf GTI Edition 50 vs GR Corolla Toyota's GR Corolla is right in the hot hatch mix alongside models like the Civic Type R, but it offers less horsepower and torque than its Honda and Volkswagen competitors, with 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The GR Corolla also hasn't logged an official lap time at Nordschleife, but it offers standard AWD for those not interested in the Golf GTI Edition 50 and Civic Type R's FWD configuration. While pricing info hasn't yet been released for the Golf GTI Edition 50, the GR Corolla is a better bargain, starting at $40,055 compared to the Civic Type R's $47,045 base MSRP. Volkswagen Golf GTI — Source: Volkswagen Final thoughts Production of the exclusive Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is scheduled to begin in Wolfsburg, Germany, at the end of 2025, with deliveries starting in early 2026. While the Civic Type R has Nordschleife lap bragging rights, the Golf GTI Edition 50's higher horsepower, near-equivalent track time, and optional performance package supply this Volkswagen with extra cachet, amplifying the models' rivalry. The Golf GTI Edition 50 also outperformed the Golf R 20th Anniversary edition's Nurburgring lap time of seven minutes and 47.31 seconds, Volkswagen's previous record production pace achieved in 2022.
