Netflix's latest series, "Bet", has become a binge-worthy obsession of viewers, including me.
This gripping adaptation of the Japanese manga, "Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler", offers not just high-stakes gambling but a thrilling narrative steeped in dark revenge and moral dilemmas.
"Bet" follows Yumeko (Miku Martineau), a transfer student at an elite boarding school.
The students are children of leaders who run the world, underground and otherwise. They are taught how to be as ruthless as their parents are in hopes of one day ruling the world too.
But here's the twist: At St. Dominic's Prep, underground gambling dictates their social order. The Top 10 best gamblers are part of the school's student council. Yumeko needs to be here.
Yumeko, a skilled gambler herself, challenges the established hierarchy and the school's power structure - she intends to bring the school to its knees.
But let's backtrack a bit. Yumeko's parents attended St. Dominic's Prep.
They were murdered when she was just a little girl. She watched as they waved goodbye to her before jumping into their car, which was engulfed in flames.
Now a young adult, the flames of revenge ignite within her core.
She wants to know who ordered the hit on her parents and will go to any extent to avenge their deaths. In one episode, she constructs a bomb in her dorm room, places it under the seat of the man she thinks is responsible for her parents' deaths.
Luckily for him, the bomb was defective. Later, she finds out he isn't the killer.
Yumeko can't do this alone, so she's got a few sidekicks, Ryan, Mary and Michael, who later turns on her after finding out that his mafia father could be the killer.
After several high-stakes bets, Yumeko finally makes the Top 10, and now the real game begins.
Yumeko is faced with difficult truths about who killed her parents, as for how she handles it ... Well, I won't spoil it.
What I will say is that "Bet" expertly intertwines elements of suspense, strategy, and personal drama, leaving viewers addicted and begging for another season.

'I'm pampered': Anele Mdoda shares joys of marriage on the 'What Now with Trevor Noah' podcast

Anele Mdoda and her husband, Buzza James, embracing in Munich. Image: Instagram. In the latest episode of the wildly popular podcast "What Now with Trevor Noah", listeners were treated to a delightful conversation between host Trevor Noah and his friends, radio presenter and film producer Anele Mdoda and fellow radio personality Sizwe Dhlomo. The episode took a heartfelt turn as Mdoda, who recently celebrated her traditional marriage to Bonelela Buzza James, opened up about her exciting new chapter as a bride. Describing her experience of being newly married, Mdoda radiated happiness as she shared: "I'm spoiled, I'm pampered, it's nice. I do nothing which is great ... They try to tell us women, you must cook, you must clean, no, none of that. The real marriage is that it's the man that does everything." She continued to say that all she needed to do was cook. "It's so nice to find a partner, like I've literally found an equal, like he my dude, he's my guy. I feel so protected and safe and it's just that entire thing. Also because he's the one person in the world that I don't have to convince to be on my side. He is automatically on my side." Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ While Mdoda celebrated her marital bliss, Dhlomo chimed in with playful banter, teasing the possibility of his own secret marriage. The light-hearted conversation continued as Noah revealed that Mdoda's upcoming white wedding would be a significant milestone for him - it would be the first wedding he has ever attended. "I've never attended a wedding ever in my life ... A part of the reason I don't attend weddings is because I work to much and the other reason is that people don't invite me to their weddings or they uninvite me because I am me," said Noah. Curious about wedding etiquette, he sought advice from Mdoda regarding her special day. "Is there anything I should or shouldn't do?" To which Mdoda responded: "You'll be fine, Trevor. You've been to the Oscars and Grammy's ..." She also divulged the one rule that she will never break when attending weddings. "I have a hard rule that I do not take photos at weddings with people because it's all about the couple, leave me out of it," said Mdoda. Watch the full podcast below.

Season 2 of multi-award-winning local conservation series lauded

Shamwari Untamed Season 2 , the sequel to the internationally lauded first series, has won two awards at the International Tourism Film Festival Africa Awards 2025 (ITFFA). Episode 9 won the gold award for a documentary, television and web conservation series, and the 10-part docu-series won the Festival Directors' Award in the wildlife and conservation category. The series has only recently been put into distribution and is not yet available in South Africa. The series was co-produced, filmed, directed and edited by wildlife filmmakers Janine Joubert and Andrew Barrat, both long-time collaborators with Shamwari Private Game Reserve. One of Andrew's documentaries about the largest vulture relocation in Africa previously won a top award at the ITFFA. As with the multi-award-winning first series, Shamwari Untamed Season 2 , is told largely from the perspective of wildlife vet, Johan Joubert, and ecologist, John O'Brien. It captures the team's latest and most ambitious endeavour: the restoration and re-wilding of newly acquired land and how the area is being transformed into a haven for wildlife. This includes the exhilarating, often dangerous and delicate process of relocating species such as zebras, elephants, rhinos and lions and the steps essential in rebuilding a balanced and thriving ecosystem. The series also explores the use of solar-powered GPS collars linked to artificial intelligence systems that allow anti-poaching teams to respond quickly if animals are acting unusually. One of the most poignant episodes records the successful rehabilitation and reintroduction of two orphaned elephants to a wild herd. The series also covers the relocation of 150 vultures to Shamwari, in one of the largest vulture relocation projects ever undertaken and the establishment of a rehabilitation centre and breeding colony. It follows John O'Brien as he tracks the progress of wild litters of lion and cheetah cubs. At the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, it shows how orphaned baby giraffes and rhinos are cared for and the construction of a new habitat for a meerkat colony, before their release back into the wild. 'The first series was a conservation classic. Andrew and Janine have built on that, and we expect the second series to be every bit as successful. It is a truly accurate, insightful and authentic depiction of a conservation team at work,' said Shamwari CEO, Joe Cloete. The original Shamwari Untamed series can be found on Netflix here:
