New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, who is running in the Democratic primary for mayor in New York City, issued a statement after his office said it received multiple threats about blowing up his car.
Newsweek reached out to Mamdani's campaign and the New York City Police Department outside of business hours for comment.
The Context
Mamdani has emerged as a leading candidate among the city's most progressive voters in the mayoral primary election due to policy proposals, including rent freezes and city-owned grocery stores to combat rising grocery costs. He has been endorsed by New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
Most polls show that one of his rivals, Andrew Cuomo, a centrist candidate who resigned in 2021 as New York's governor amid allegations of sexual harassment that he has denied, has a lead over Mamdani. Whichever candidate wins will likely become the favorite in the November general election, given that New York City is a Democratic stronghold.
Mamdani's campaign recently hired security to deal with the increasing threats made against him. He told reporters this week that he receives anti-Muslim messages and death threats.

What To Know
Mamdani's office received four voicemails from an unknown individual who said they would blow up his car, a spokesperson for his campaign told various news outlets.
"After multiple death threats and racist messages, Assemblymember Mamdani's office is participating in an ongoing investigation by the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force," the statement said.
"While Zohran does not own a car, the violent and specific language of what appears to be a repeat caller is alarming and we are taking every precaution. While this is a sad reality, it is not surprising after millions of dollars have been spent on dehumanizing, Islamophobic rhetoric designed to stoke division and hate. Violence and racism should have no place in our politics. Zohran remains focused on delivering a safe and affordable New York."
The NYPD said it was investigating the report and added that the calls, which included "threatening anti-Muslim statements," were made on various dates and reported on Wednesday.
What People Are Saying
Zohran Mamdani told reporters earlier this week: "I get messages that say things like the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim. I get threats on my life and on the people that I love and I try not to talk about it."
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is also running in the primary, said in a statement thatit was "an atrocious threat of political violence" that "has no place in our politics or our society."
What Happens Next
The investigation into the threats is ongoing and is being conducted by the Hate Crime Task Force division of the NYPD.
The primary election is next Tuesday, June 24, and early voting has opened. The general election for mayor is November 4, 2025.

JD Vance boasts Trump will call in National Guard to quell riots ‘again if he has to' following appeals court victory

President Trump will not hesitate to send in the National Guard 'again' after an appeals court ruled the commander in chief can maintain control of thousands of troops he deployed to the City of Angeles in response to anti-ICE riots, Vice President JD Vance declared Friday. 'If you enforce your own laws and if you protect federal law enforcement, we're not going to send in the National Guard — because it's unnecessary,' Vance said during remarks outside a federal building in Los Angeles. 'But if you let violent rioters burn great American cities to the ground, then of course we're going to send federal law enforcement in to protect people.' 3 Vice President JD Vance visited Los Angeles on Friday, a city that has become the epicenter of anti-ICE riots in response to President Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. The Sun 'The president's going to do it again if he has to, but hopefully it won't be necessary,' the vice president warned. Vance noted that the 'rioting has gotten a lot better' since Trump dispatched active-duty service members to LA, but he warned that local officials are 'worried that it's going to flare back up.' Los Angeles has become the epicenter of anti-ICE riots in response to Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. Trump deployed troops to the City of Angeles to tamp down clashes between rioters and federal authorities seeking out criminal illegal migrants. The vice president toured a multi-agency federal joint operations center and an FBI mobile command center currently being used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials during his trip to Los Angeles. Vance was briefed by leaders of the 14 different agencies — including ICE, Department of Defense, Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security, Los Angeles Police Department and California Highway Patrol — using the operations center to coordinate immigration enforcement actions in LA. 3 Vance told reporters outside a Los Angeles federal building that, 'If you enforce your own laws and if you protect federal law enforcement, we're not going to send in the National Guard — because it's unnecessary.' The veep also met with some of the 200 active-duty Marines deployed to the city and tasked with protecting federal property and federal personnel. They will be joined by an additional 500 Marines and 2,000 more Guardsmen, on top of the 2,000 National Guard troops already active in the city. US District Court Judge Charles Breyer had previously ruled that Trump likely exceeded his constitutional authority by dispatching the soldiers despite opposition from California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom — marking the first deployment of a state National Guard by the president without the governor's permission since 1965. The San Francisco-based Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals, however, suggested in its ruling that Trump lawfully exercised his statutory authority in taking federal control of the guard, as the violence and chaos in Los Angeles warranted the administration's decision to do so. 3 Vance also said the rioting has calmed down a bit since President Trump sent the National Guard into the area. The Sun Trump called the decision a 'BIG WIN' in a post on Truth Social. The president has previously suggested that Los Angeles would be 'burning to the ground' if he hadn't sent in the Marines and National Guard to quell the anti-ICE riots. ICE has continued carrying out enforcement operations in LA despite the protests. During his brief remarks, Vance said that he wished Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) — who was thrown out of a Department of Homeland Security press conference last week and handcuffed after interrupting Secretary Kristi Noem — had been present, but he mixed up the senator's name. 'I was hoping Jose Padilla would be here to ask a question, but unfortunately, I guess he decided not to show up because there wasn't the theater — and that's all it is.'

Vance says National Guard still "necessary" in Los Angeles, accuses Newsom of "endangering law enforcement"

Washington — During a visit with federal law enforcement in Los Angeles on Friday, Vice President JD Vance said the Trump administration still believes a military deployment to the city is necessary. Vance is the highest-ranking Trump administration official to visit the Los Angeles area since protests broke out in the nation's second-largest city over Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. He gave brief remarks after touring a multi-agency Federal Joint Operations Center and a federal mobile command center, and meeting with leadership and Marines on the ground. President Trump federalized thousands of troops from the California National Guard in response to the Los Angeles-area protests and ordered about 700 Marines to be deployed to protect federal property. The president has directed federal immigration authorities to prioritize deporting individuals from Democratic-run cities, including Los Angeles, and a series of ICE operations in L.A. sparked the protests earlier this month. The deployments drew a lawsuit from California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who argued the presence of military forces could inflame the situation. Late Thursday, a federal appeals court allowed the president to keep control of the National Guard troops he deployed to the Los Angeles region, halting a ruling from a lower court judge who said the president acted illegally when he activated the troops over objections from Newsom. The protests have waned, but the troops remain. In remarks to reporters on Friday, Vance said the situation has "gotten a lot better," but the Marines and National Guard forces are still "very much a necessary part of what's going on here," arguing the protests could "flare back up." The vice president also alleged that Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass had "egged on" violence during the protests. The administration has accused state and local officials of failing to protect federal immigration agents from threats and interference from protesters. Local authorities have pushed back, arguing federal authorities are responsible for the chaos. "I would absolutely say that Gavin Newsom is endangering law enforcement," Vance said. Vance suggested the administration is willing to use the Guard in other places, but that it hopes not to. "If you enforce your own laws and if you protect federal law enforcement, we're not going to send in the National Guard because it's unnecessary," the vice president said. In a statement to CBS News, Newsom's office criticized Vance's visit — including one moment in which the vice president referred to Sen. Alex Padilla of California as "Jose Padilla." The Democratic senator made news last week after he was forcibly removed from a press conference hosted by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. "It was very generous of the Vice President to take time out of his closed-door fundraiser to stage a photo op in front of a fire truck — where he "mistakenly" called a Latino U.S. Senator 'Jose.' We'll let Californians judge his visit for themselves," Newsom's office said. On Thursday, federal agents were seen outside the Los Angeles Dodgers ballpark, after the team said it blocked immigration authorities from entering. Fans protested, and the Department of Homeland Security said Customs and Border Patrol vehicles "were in the stadium parking lot very briefly, unrelated to any operation or enforcement." Federal immigration officers have stepped up enforcement efforts, with White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller saying ICE officers are aiming for at least 3,000 arrests a day. So far, the number of arrests has failed to reach that target, with a daily average of about 1,200 arrests in the month of June as of earlier this week. Back in Washington, Mr. Trump is handling international matters, particularly the Israel-Iran conflict. In a statement on Thursday, the president said he will decide whether the U.S. will join Israel in its strikes in the next two weeks. The president traveled to Bedminster, New Jersey, for a fundraising dinner Friday night after meetings with his national security team at the White House.

Hunger strikes! Tears! Arrest! It's been a week of ridiculous performances as NYC liberals chase folk-hero status

What's another starving BS artist? Cynthia Nixon's daughter Seph Mozes, who identifies as a man, is going on a hunger strike for Gaza — but really for attention. 'He and five of his compatriots are doing a hunger strike in Chicago … ,' a proud Nixon told Newsweek, adding that her 28-year-old child has no 'illusions that he's going to end the war, but I think he wants to do everything he can.' To earn a merit badge in the art of self-congratulations, apparently. 6 Cynthia Nixon told Newsweek that her child Seph Mozes is now doing a hunger strike for Gaza Instagram/Cynthia Nixon Maybe Nixon's offspring had the misfortune of seeing the actress in bed with Rosie O'Donnell in the third-season premiere of 'And Just Like That.' Such a sight would put anyone off eating. But it's probably more like the famous anti-drug PSA from the '80s: 'I learned it by watching you, Mom.' Shortly after Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, Nixon — who ran an unsuccessful campaign for New York governor in 2018 — boldly announced she was joining lawmakers, including current nutjob mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, in a five-day fast supporting ceasefire in Gaza. Nixon, however, committed to just two days of the five — a full 48 hours of abstaining from her beloved cinnamon raisin bagels with lox. She knows sacrifice and solidarity. 6 A Trump supporter shouted at marchers during the June 14 'No Kings' march in Manhattan. Aristide Economopoulos It's only fitting that Nixon's most recent proclamation capped off a banner week of performative activism by New York City progressives in search of folk-hero status. One pol was arrested, another cried and there were many self-righteous tweets posted with the presumed expectation that they'll end up in the Smithsonian one day. It all kicked off last Saturday with the No Kings anti-Trump protest, which was a social mixer for Boomer hippies. Did it mean anything? Like its predecessor the pink pussy hat marches, this was a collective tantrum against a duly-elected president. And maybe a guarantee that participants would get in their 10,000 steps for the day. Only days later, City Comptroller and Dem mayoral candidate Brad Lander desperately tried to revive his rotting corpse of a campaign by getting arrested on camera — not the first time. 6 City Comptroller Brad Lander was placed under arrest by ICE agents Tuesday after he obstructed them from an arrestee by refusing to remove his hand from the man's shoulder. Dean Moses/amNewYork 6 Lander's arrest was captured in a series of dramatic photos. via REUTERS In this instance, he pathetically tangled with ICE officers after demanding to see a warrant for someone being detained outside federal immigration court. Clinging to the guy's shoulder, he made a clear provocation to the officers to cuff him. And they made his day. Lander thought it would be a profile in courage. But it produced a series of unbelievable images that made him look like the town drunk being hauled out of his local watering hole for getting handsy with a waitress. In one, his bulging eyes rolled back into his head, he resembles Rodney Dangerfield. No respect! He was sprung by Gov. Kathy Hochul, who seems to only visit New York City for photo ops. Who can forget her riding the subway to tout its safety … on the same day a woman was incinerated by an illegal migrant on an F Train. 6 Kathy Hochul posted this picture of herself and Brad Lander walking after Lander was released without charges. Governor Kathy Hochul / X This time, our Democratic guv marched into the federal building and collected Lander, who was released without charges. She then tweeted a photo of them defiantly walking together, captioned with the state slogan 'Excelsior' — Latin for 'ever upward.' In Hochul-ese, it translates to 'empty political posturing.' After his publicity stunt, Lander was greeted like a conquering hero by lefty loonies including Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and absentee Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, who posted a photo of himself hugging the candidate and touting his 'courage.' Do these people know that we can't even buy toothpaste in this city without buzzing a worker to unlock it? But hey, they got their photo op. 6 As he was facing questions about his use of the phrase 'Globalize the Intifada,' mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani cried while telling reporters about the Islamophobia he's faced. Bernadette Hogan/NY1 Our pols are severely misguided. They regularly pledge to fight against Trump rather than fighting for everyday New Yorkers to have order and an affordable city. The rotten cherry on top was Mamdani — a political novice but a seasoned performer. He tried to blunt a blossoming new antisemitic scandal, fueled by his use of the phrase 'globalize the intifada' … by pivoting into his own victimhood. 'I get messages that say the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim. I get threats on my life,' he said, choking back tears. Even the mere threat of political violence is an abomination, full stop. Just ask Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who had his house burned in an attack police said was driven by antisemitism. Or the families of the young couple killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum in DC, allegedly by a man who said, 'I did it for Gaza.' But if Mamdani is going to cry every time he hears or sees some nasty words, perhaps being mayor of New York — which requires a firm hand and a thick hide — is not the job for him. The Big Apple has enough actors and clowns. Let's get some serious adults in here to run things.
