SANRAL announces full closure of the N3 national road from 9 May

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has confirmed that the N3 highway near Ashburton will be closed in both directions from the evening of 9 May to the early morning of 11 May. This is to allow for the demolition of the Ashburton (Pope Ellis Drive) bridge as part of ongoing road construction along the vital transport corridor.
The complete shutdown of the N3 will begin at 20:00 on Friday, 9 May and continue until 5:00 on Sunday, 11 May. During this period, no vehicles will be able to access the N3 between the Lynnfield (Lion Park) and Market Road interchanges.
'Full closures will take place at Lynnfield and Market Road interchanges with both the North bound and South bound traffic being unable to access the N3 during said times,' explained Jason Lowe, SANRAL's KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer.
'The traffic accommodation team, with the assistance of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), will manage and monitor the diversion of traffic to the R103.'
To accommodate the disruption, SANRAL advises motorists to use the R103 as an alternative route. Northbound traffic from Durban to Pietermaritzburg should exit at Lynnfield and follow the R103 to rejoin the N3 at Market Road. Southbound traffic from Pietermaritzburg to Durban should exit at Market Road and reconnect to the N3 via Lynnfield.
Pope Ellis Drive will remain open during the demolition, but will operate under stop/go traffic control. SANRAL warns that significant delays are expected, particularly for vehicles with heavy goods.
'Significant delays are likely to be experienced as the R103 cannot handle the same traffic volumes as the N3,' Lowe cautioned.
'Motorists, especially heavy goods vehicles, are urged to reschedule their trips to avoid traveling during the closure.'
Additionally, with traffic volumes expected to exceed the capacity of the R103, SANRAL encourages all road users to plan ahead, adjust routes, and adhere to all signage and speed limits.
'SANRAL wishes to apologise to the motoring public for any inconvenience caused,' Lowe added.

#TrafficAlert: Parts of N2 and M13 to close for King Cetshwayo bridge demolition The N2 between Springfield Park (Umgeni Interchange) and Spaghetti Junction (EB Cloete Interchange) will close in both directions from Saturday night until Monday morning. A further closure will be in place on the M13 between 45th Cutting and Westwood Mall (Essex Terrace Interchange) to accommodate the partial demolition of the King Cetshwayo Bridge, which carries the M13 over the N2. Both closures will be in place simultaneously from 6pm on Saturday, June 21, until 4am on Monday, June 23. 'Construction continues on the upgraded King Cetshwayo Bridge, following its partial demolition in October 2023,' said SANRAL's Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer, Jason Lowe. 'This closure is part of the ongoing upgrade process for the N2 and the EB Cloete Interchange, aimed at relieving congestion and improving road safety along this critical national route.' Motorists are urged to plan for alternative routes during the closure. Full Closure Locations N2 Closure Locations (at EB Cloete Interchange): N3 West Bound (Durban to Pinetown): Ramp to N2 North closed (towards Umhlanga/King Shaka International Airport). N3 East Bound (Pinetown to Durban): Ramp to N2 North closed. N2 Northbound: Closed between EB Cloete Interchange and Umgeni Road Interchange. M13 West Bound: Closed at 45th Avenue (also known as 45th Cutting). 'We understand that these road closures cause major travel disruption so we have minimised the length of the closures and planned them to take place at times when the traffic disruption will be at its least,' said Lowe. 'Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period, find suitable staging areas or reroute via the M4, M7 or M19 to avoid congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes.' Find a full list of alternative routes here. Former golfer fails in bid to sue RAF for R17m ' life-altering injuries'

Teaghan Gauche. Image: Facebook/Screenshot DAMAGES A FORMER golfer who said he was compelled to retire from professional golf in 2022 due to persistent physical limitations arising from a car accident, was dealt a blow when the court turned down his R15 million against Road Accident Fund (RAF) for estimated loss of earnings. Teagan Gauche turned to the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, claiming more than R17 million from the RAF for the severe injuries in December 2013. The incident happened while driving when he had to swerve out of the way for an oncoming taxi. His vehicle landed on its roof. Included in his damages claim against the fund is a claim for R15 million for estimated loss of earnings. SLICE: Former golfer Teagan Gauche Image: Amateur Video Player is loading. Gauche sustained a fracture-dislocation of the cervical spine and a neck injury among other injuries. He said he had a bright golfing future at the time, and if it was not for the accident, he would have earned a lot of money from golfing. At the time of the collision, he was a 21-year-old amateur golfer. He had to take two years off after the collision and was obliged to withdraw from events owing to pain. He further told the court that he became a professional golfer and played professionally from 2017. He stopped his professional golfing career in 2022 due to his injuries, he said. An industrial psychologist, one of many medical experts who submitted reports to the court, stated that Gauche's income from professional golfing fell significantly in 2021, a year before he retired. She said he was unable to participate in the PGA tour (a 12-month golfing season) owing to Covid-19 restrictions. She concluded that Gauche could have advanced to the level of a professional golfer with an equivalent high international ranking (probably a PGA player Midpoint). Gauche testified that he was ranked among the top four amateur golfers in South Africa at the time of the accident. He claims that he was expected to become a professional golfer in 2014, adding that the accident delayed his transition to professional status, which only materialised in 2017. Acting Judge PD Kekana, however, said the evidence does not support this timeline. The neurosurgeon recorded that Gauche resumed playing golf in 2014 and was competing professionally by 2015. The industrial psychologist and the neurologist also recorded that the plaintiff started playing professionally in 2015. The claim that the plaintiff's professional career only commenced in 2017 is, therefore, inconsistent with the medical evidence. Admittedly, the accident and recovery period may have caused some disruption to his golfing career, but the evidence does not establish that he suffered loss of income because of it, the judge said. His coach stated that the plaintiff was on the brink of turning professional at the time of the accident. He compared Gauche's potential to that of established professionals. However, he stated that the plaintiff's golfing performance was negatively impacted by a neck injury affecting his swing and a blind spot in his left eye affecting his short game.
